Or rather, I'm rescuing a betta from my cousin.
Her friends gave him to her as a housewarming gift when she moved in to her new place a couple months ago. rolleyes I tried to tell her about proper care, but I knew she wouldn't actually do it.
Fast forward to two weeks ago, when I went over to visit her. He was in horrible conditions. In a bowl (of course), half empty, with some sort of nasty scummy film over the entire surface of the water. The water was literally grey. I had a minor hissy fit, trying to keep it under control so she wouldn't feel defensive. She told me she knew he was in bad conditions and she had actually planned on hiding him from me, but forgot. I tried to convince her to give him to me, but she wouldn't- saying he had been a gift and her friends would be upset.
Well, she posted on my Facebook wall today asking if I still wanted him. Apparently a different friend came over today and also freaked out about his conditions (because I doubt she cleaned the bowl since I was over) and told her she was abusing him.
Of course I said I'd take him. smile I have a 5 gallon up and running as a quarantine/sick tank, so all I have to do is add some media from one of my other tanks for an insta-cycle and he'll be good to go. He's a red with some sort of wash, it was hard to tell through the grey water. I'm not sure when I'll be getting him, but I'll post pics of "Downtown Leroy Brown" when I get him.

Well, this is what he was in: I took nearly four hours to drip acclimate him, and he's in the tank now. No pics yet, he's pretty stressed. He's pale, stress striped, and fin clamped, but I'm hoping he makes it!

... I don't have words to describe how gross that is. That's worse than I ever let my first betta's bowl get, back when I didn't have a clue as to properly taking care of a betta.
That's why I hate it when people tell me they're purchasing fish for someone as a gift. Or any pet. But especially bettas. >< I'm going to start trying to dissuade them.
I hope he makes it, too! VT, CT, or another fin type? o:

He made it through the night! He seems less stressed this morning too. I think he'll be a little stinker when he feels 100%! Got one pic of him to share. smile

Savage Destiny Well Akari that just means you get to see me post the same thing twice, since I'm too lazy to post different things. xD So: LOL Thats ok, I post stuff here, there, and on another forum. Three times for people on all three rofl I am really glad that he's doing so well. Usually, they take it really hard the first few weeks, but I think since he's only been like that for a short-ish time is really helping.

He built a bubble nest! HECK YEAH! I came home today after running errands and went to feed him, and there it was in all its glory, right on the filter baffle. Unfortunately it'll get ruined tomorrow, the tanks are due for water changes. sad But it really makes me think he's feeling great. I can't believe he recovered so quickly! I also got a pic of him flaring at his java fern this morning, little stinker. You can see the black edges of the fin rot, and where he should have more rays. Last but not least, his home made hide was ready tonight. So here's his tank setup now- he's hiding behind the hut in this pic. And Leroy Brown himself checking out the new digs: All in all, its a good day. smile
