Okay, I need some opinion help, dear lolis!

I'm making a dress for a friend, and it's a surprise, so I can't ask her opinion. (Isn't it lovely and convenient that I already have her measurements? XD) So I'm asking you! <3

Here are two pictures of the skirt, in-progress.

My dressform wearing the skirt while I hold it open because I don't have a good petticoat. (That's what I get for being an Ouji. XD)

Closeup of the fabric and bottom edge. I dunno why the little eyelets in the lace look colored, it must be my stupid webcam. Ignore that. ^^;

Anyway. First of all, PLEASE tell me this fabric is an appropriate choice. I really liked it, but I don't do a lot of girly styles, so I don't know all the nuances yet. >_< Not that I can change it now anyway. I just don't want her to wear it and be embarrassed in front of other lolitas. ^^;

Secondly, opinions on the position of the lace. Should I leave it where it is, or move it up a couple inches so it looks like two separate ruffles? (the black ruffle on the bottom is a separate piece.)

Thank you! biggrin

I like the fabric you chose; its pretty. I think the lace is in a good place, but maybe you can add a black ribbon along the top edge?

The eyelet is too narrow to look good as a separate ruffle unless you had a ton of it in rows. I just think it would look nice with some extra black in there to help blend it, but its not necessary.

I recognize that fabric, I've used it myself and I think it's a lovely choice.

If I were making the skirt, I would add a second row of lace around the bottom of the ruffle, keeping the eyelet where it is now. And perhaps used tatted rather than eyelet, but that's neither here nor there. Then again, I do subscribe to the "more is more" school of lace.

I agree with Kittywitch on that second row on the edge of the ruffle. Though, I think she means the Cluny lace or Bobbin lace, rather than tatted lace, as it would be prohibitively expensive since its made by hand and very slow. But, maybe I'm wrong and there's now a machine that can replicate tatting.

No, I did not mean hand-tatted lace. sweatdrop There are machines that can create an effect very similar to tatting, but cluny or bobbin lace would be just as effective.

I assumed that any style of lace she would be buying would be machine made and probably come from Jo-anns, I used "tatted" to refer to the style I was thinking of, not the actual construction. I realize my mistake in that. I should have specified.

Oh, that's cool! That's why I said that maybe there was something I didn't know about, since I only knew of hand tatted lace. Don't worry over the correct terminology or apologize, you've done nothing wrong. I thought I understood what you were referring to, but was just making sure, in case I was completely on the wrong track.

I like looking at the lace section everytime I go to a fabric store...and have you seen Dharma Trading's collection of undyed cotton laces? So pretty! And affordable.

Yeah, I love Dharma trading. When it gets really hot, I'm usually switching out between a couple of their sundresses.

Their lace also looks really good for reenactors.
