My imagination/vision and my skill are always at odds with one another, so the art almost never matches the idea/mental image, which is incredibly frustrating. Still, I know practice is the key. With that in mind I keep trudging along, thinking practice would eventually pay off.
However, I lost my motivation and haven't drawn anything for months now. When you were first starting out, or if you're still a newbie, how did/do you get past slumps or discouragement from yourself or others?

I still have these times were I get discouraged. Sometimes I feel like my art wont ever get any better, or that I wont get to my goal of realistic art. I still have ideas that I cant draw.. Its hard to get through these moments, but I dont think I had ever not drawn for more than a week or so tops. Practice is important, but looking up reference pictures, tutorials, or asking for advice can help. Or you can right/scribble your idea down and when you figure it out you can draw it then.
Just keep drawing, if your out of ideas do some avi or fan art. Hope that helped some ^^

even when you've gained more talent as an artist you can still feel discouraged or un-motivated to draw 3nodding Practice is important but so is inspiration. When you draw, try not to think of it as a picture that must be compleated, that must be perfect.... but think of it more as practice... it dosen't matter if your "practice sheet" dosen't look good... its practice, if the picture isen't comming out how you want it to, practice colouring on it instead, or try changing the hair or cloths or redraw the same drawing in a different style.... When your feeling demotivated to work on an art piece I find the best thing to do is draw something else... draw a little comic book, or fantasy you live out in your head, keep it as little sketchs or light practice, nothing to serious... Then when things get rolling and you start feeling better, tackle something a little bigger.... Get helpful critezism for your drawings after your done your sketchs... but make sure you get them from people who know there art, but also won't be mean and bring you down just for the sake of it... friends, art teachers, or even people here in the guild are good for that : 3 If you can't find anyone your more than welcome to pm me and I'll help you as well..... Once you get a cretic, change what was suggested... and work on your drawing a new... I find that after people point out a few things, it changes your view towards your drawing... makes you more happy once you've accomplished it, because you know the drawing you made is good : 3
If you think your lack of motivation is down because you don't feel to great your self emotionaly maybe try out some of these suggestions to cheer up, I find there fun things to do when your down : 3 and help get back up there

I usually use music to ignite some sort of spark. 3nodding I listen to it for hours every single day. I think it's also what keeps me sane, haha.
That, or I look at art. Seeing other creations usually spur me to do something of my own.
Everyone hates art blocks. They must be thrown off a ten story building, into a fiery inferno. evil

What I like to do is ask people to offer up their characters for me to do something funny with. Usually humor helps me get out of an art funk. biggrin So I have their characters doing something utterly ridiculous.

The very, very important thing is to keep all your old work. I sometimes take a step back to look at my progress. It's surprising how much you don't realise how far forward you've moved.
And if I haven't, I know it's because I haven't challenged myself enough. I try something new as much as I can. To fail from trying to imitate a higher skill level is more productive than drawing the same things over and over. I look up to better artists (of all media) for inspiration and motivation. I save a large pile of stuff in my pictures folder and look back when I'm not inspired.

Well several actually; thanks. ^^ Have you ever come back to something you drew a few years ago and re-imagined it?

ChewbaccaBigSis during middle school someone stold my sketch book that i had years of work so then i gave up drawing for years then picked it up at the last year of high school xD; The same thing happened to me, too! I had a binder that had a lot of the best pieces I had done back then which was stolen during lunch escapades in High School. It also had all of my homework. >.> Probably because I drew most of my art in class. Sometimes I wonder how I managed to pass those classes, I never payed attention.

That link had the best list of good suggestions I've read in awhile. Keeping in mind that it's just practice is something that I have a problem with doing, so I often don't get passed the sketch phase because I nitpick for perfection, then get flustered and never return to the image. (Oooh so many unfinished Sai files on my computer.) I love critiques, most of which I've kept in mind while drawing and fully recognize that a lot of the improvement I had been making was directly related to the advice given. And you're right, I felt the most accomplished and happy with a project after I had fixed some of what had been suggested to be changed.

Thrown off a ten story building, into a fiery inferno... with rabid, fire immune chinchillas. No art block could withstand all that. Music is very important to me, too. xD Though sometimes a good song or three later I notice that I've spent more time singing along and concentrating on the music than the task at hand. Music usually helps get me into a commission or freebie for a friend that for some reason I have no interest in completing, and finish it or do a great deal of work on it. I look art for inspiration as well, or I browse the WIP thread. Lots of fascinating peaks behind the finished, polished art.

The only humor I've tried to go for in drawing was a bad typo I had to visualize from a roleplay. (Instead of my character jumping into a tree, he was humping it.) I think I might grab a friend's character and give it a go. ^^

I save a large pile of stuff in my pictures folder and look back when I'm not inspired. Both of those are great points. xD; I kind of swept my old art away into a folder that I don't have to look at because I found it embarrassing, but it is a good way to see how much my skill has improved, and a good way to lift discouragement. I do tend to fall back into a safety zone of portraits or headshots while sketching, when I most certainly need to practice anatomy as that's the most common critique. It's kind of like level grinding for a video game. Sure, you can run about where there's easy defeats but the experience is low. Or you can move forward and take on more difficult opponents for eventually greater rewards. .... *cough* I might also need to play less video games.

ChewbaccaBigSis haha i never payed any attention and i still passed too XDD eh im sorry to hear to hear that people just suck these days xD Slacker artists of the world unite? I noticed that a few friends and some artists I watch submit art that was doodled on the back of college work sheets. I guess inspiration sometimes strikes when we're not supposed to express it.
