For a long time I've found myself feeling down about my art. Feeling worthless, unworthy, ignored. I was stuck in an endless cycle. I'd create something I thought people would like, post it, always be devistated by the lack of response, and hating my work because I was drawing for the wrong reasons.

Somehow since my child hood days of drawing anything that popped into my head, striving to improve in every detail, and admiring my own work I'd found myself stuck in a monotonous, lackluster, confidence busting cycle. I drew for gold, for praise, but not for myself. It wasn't until I gave up that I realized what I had been missing all along.

Confidence isn't gained through meaningless praise, and joyless commission work. It's gained through self-respect, determination, and the willingness to see something in yourself where others might not.

Never stop moving forward.

Welcome to D.A.R.E... I've had this little idea bubbling about in my head for a long time, now. The long and short of it is I wanted to create a place where artists in any capacity be it visual, written, musical, physical, or what have you can find the encouragement, and resources to push themselves out of their comfort zone. I know what it's like to get stuck in a rut... to only draw one style, to only write or perform one genre. I've been that person telling themself, I suck at this, letting my own inhibitions feed into self-depreciating thoughts and feelings. I don't want that for myself, and I don't want it for anyone else. So here it is. I dare you to step out of your comfort zone. I dare you to try something new, something you you always assumed you couldn't. I dare you to make yourself proud... I dare you...

We all have great potential... Everyone here is an artist in their own capacity. Do something, create something, inspire yourself and others. I'm here to help, and I doubt I'm alone.

What do I do here?

Find encouragement, and constructive criticism from your peers
Find help gathering resources, and brainstorming ideas.
Talk about what you're working on currently, and how you're going to put your heart into it.
Inspire yourself and others.
Post WIPs, and finished peices that you're proud of. Not that you think others will like.

I want to see you improve, I want you to be proud of what you create, I want you to be excited about your skills and talents, whatever they may be. I want you to be confident, because no one deserves to feel as worthless as I have.

This piece is actually a commission, but I think of it also as a personal project. This this piece I'm pushing myself with a lot of stuff I HATE doing DX;;;

I'm terrible with perspective so I was constantly asking a friend for their advice. Just the preliminary sketch took a couple weeks.

I'm a lazy artist and will usually try to get away with just drawing a headshot or waist up the most. Nothing else. I don't even like coloring.

But I really want this to come out as good as possible so I'm spending hours and hours and hours on this. I also tried to add as much detail as possible. Even more will be added when I get into rendering things with color.

For this piece I decided there will be no limitations, what the client asked for I would try my hardest to do it to the best of my abilities. I will admit though, I feel like I'm going crazy at times and it gets very frustrating. But all in all, as I struggle along and things fall into place I'm feeling quite proud of this.

But when most people look at it they're just like, "Oh, that's nice..." and end of subject. It can be quite dejecting. But, eh.... As long as I like it and the client likes it. Must continue! *flails*

OMG this is so insperational !!! D: I wanna participate as well!!! This is the current sketch I'm working on. I was just gonna colour it quickly and be done with it, but now I feel like I should do more, push myself a bit more > : D I'm open to suggestions!!!! anyone?

p.s ideas for a nice and very simple background would be good. I've always done detailed background with my pics and was thinking of maybe trying to do a character on a white background a little like this, what do you guys think?

@ Gomeric: I absolutly LOVE what your doing, specially with all the details in your pic its sooo beautiful so far!!! don't give up!!! its really awsome !!!!!!!!!

You are both off to an amazing start! I really love both of your posing.

Gomeric: I was really excited when I saw your post. I thought the small details, the posing, and the scene itself really gave a good idea of the setting, and the characters personality. I especially the detail work on the desk, and how you even went so far as to include small details in the wood work. I can't wait to see what you end up doing with the colors.

Kai: The image reminds me of those retro pinups. If you're wanting something simple but reminiscent of the image I'd say going with a styalized background sort of like these:

Simple but visually interesting Grungy, retro textures Maybe incorporate it into a shape sort of likethis. Maybe a lip print.

First of all, I'm really loving the idea of this thread. The OP sounds so inspirational! <3

@Gomeric~ I know I've seen you post this WIP before, and I don't know if I said it then, but I'll say it now: I cannot WAIT to see that picture finished. I can tell you're taking extra time and putting in real effort, and that always makes a piece stand out. Like the OP and yourself, I know how it feels to sometimes get a little discouraged or frustrated, but from experience, if you're working on a picture that's taking time to figure out and piece together, and you're steadily growing more proud as you complete it, you'll feel amazingly accomplished when it's done!

@Kai_Chi~ It never hurts to push yourself in some way or other, or to try something new. Like that last sketch, the chibi I worked on, it was fairly simple, but I worked with my lighting and I worked with a background idea I had that I ended up really liking. Anyway, it looks great so far, and I'd love to see this finished, too!

@Nuna~ Those are some creative ideas! The only ones that came to mind for me still seemed more or less too detailed and time consuming.

p.s.- Btw, if I talk *type too much... Feel free to tell me to shut up. Kthnx. <3

It wouldn't hurt to post your ideas anyway, even if they are more complicated then kai was asking. You never know maybe she'll be really inspired by it and want to push herself even further.

I'll be excited to see it. :3

Eventually I'll get off my lazy but and post a WIP of what I've been working on. I've been trying my hand at backgrounds and I'd love to get some crit befor I get too far into it.

yea I know the feeling... I've been telling myself for the past couple days to start working on my pic, but I always get to easoly distracted by other things that I never get to it... but thats my lazy side kicking me around... no other excuse...sadly XD

For me its a combination of laziness, and being so engrossed in my language studies. I get... really in to stuff like that, and disappear for days studying. XD

ahhhhh ok I understand : ) well studies should always come first anyways
PostPosted: Tue Jan 25, 2011 8:53 pm

Well, that where it gets weird. i'm not technically studying anything... er, shalle we say mandated. It's not for a class or anything, I just... enjoy languages. You see I have this issue where when I perceive myself to be good at something I obsess over it endlessly trying to gain as much knowledge as I can.

It's the same reason why I'm really good at puzzles and ciphers, but I can't figure out riddles becaue I overthink them.

Well good luck with your studies Nuna! ^ ^
If it's so appealing naturally I'm sure you must not have too much trouble, though.
PostPosted: Tue Jan 25, 2011 8:57 pm

The big issue with studying for me, is that I have to feel like I'm good at the subject to have a natural knack for studying it. So things like math, I just... can't seem to comprehend. The only times thats not true is when Im able to get myself to view it as a language or a cipher. Geometry was easy for obvious reasons too. xD
