Basic Information
The weapon is essentially the XM8 firing system designed to use caseless rounds, be belt fed, and fit into an M-4 weapon format. The weapon uses a detachable 16 inch 1:8 inch (203.2mm) turn five groove right hand twist polygonal barrel, although shorter barrels of 12 inches and longer barrels of 20 inches and 24 inches are available.
The weapon was designed with the idea in mind for the weapon to full-fill all the basic requirements in a standard rifleman team. The weapon is light enough, small enough and has low enough recoil to be used as a carbine for a rifleman, it is accurate enough to be used as a marksmen weapon, and it is durable enough to be used as a SAW weapon or an IAR. This is in part due to the ammunition in choice, the ammunition being caseless, and therefore extremely light, benefiting all combat positions, and the inherent, raw power and accuracy the round provides.
With the standard 16 inch barrel, the weapon is roughly 6.5 unloaded. As each round is around 8 grams, the weapon fully loaded with 100 rounds is around 8.35 lb with links and a case. The weapon is around 10.25 lb with 200 rounds of ammunition.
The weapon is also designed to use a Mini Paladin muzzle break, which almost completely eliminates the recoil of the weapon. In addition to this, the weapon also uses a hydraulic buffer similar to one found in the M249 series. It is as well equipped with a impact gel recoil pad, the combined effects of all recoil reducing devices capable of nearly eliminating all felt recoil.
