I had a thought the other day. What if DnD wasn't fantasy, but the reality we all lived in today? This game is going to look into that question.

The Story...

It was a pretty average day in the Dire Lion Inn in Tishmat. The large, yet grubby pub was filled with it's usual clientèle. Mainly sorry looking characters that liked to drink by themselves, with the occasional table filled with adventuring companies of some sort.

Today there happened to be an Elf sat by himself in the corner, getting many strange looks. He seemed uncomfortable in this place, and edgy at the sight of all the other patrons. The sweat dripped down his forehead as he physically shook in his seat. Suddenly the Elf did something very strange...

He stood up and started shouting. Shouting some very strange words...

"Television! Internet! Coke-Cola! Burger King!"

The strange fellow scanned the bar, looking at everyone's reactions. Most seemed shocked and confused, if not just totally uncaring. Distraught and close to hysterics, the Elf sat back down and started mildly sipping at his frothy ale.

Though conveniently for the Elf, the bar he happened to be sat in had a few patrons that knew exactly what he was talking about...

Game.

For the game I want to try something interesting. I want you to role play yourself. If DnD was this reality, what class would you be? What race would you be? What skills do you have in real life and how would they relate to DnD classes?

This is a 4th edition game, in which you play a lvl1 character - standard 22 point buy. I want a link to all characters sheets from mythweavers/tangledweb/ect. I'm going to be pretty liberal as to what sources you can use, but I'll be asking for a bibliography of sorts for feats and items so I know you're not just making up some OP stuff of your own. =P

Backgrounds are a necessity. What was your last memory of this reality? Was it as simple as going to bed in real life and waking up in the DnD universe? Were you captured by some unseen assailant and forced in the back of a truck, drugged and awoke as a Tiefling? How long have you lived this fantasy life? Have you gotten by in your new form for a few years, or is this your first day here? Do you know any of the other PC's from your time travelling, or are you alone?

This is a standard pbp game that should hopefully grow into a prolonged campaign. I don't really want more than 6 people, though may add more if a lot of people like the idea of this. Obviously this is going to be a very strange campaign, so I don't know how popular it'll be. What do people think?

Y'know I'm reading this in a Burger King.

I did this once back in 2nd or 3rd edition(maybe both) I got crap from the other characters for becoming a priest in this new world so quickly.

I would think that a standard level 1 4e character would be significantly beefier than the average gamer, but I can see the high-int low-cha PCs just rolling in already.((this has to be the most common self-prescription I've seen in "what would your stats be" threads)) Mastery of a foreign power source would have to require quite a story, as well as adaptation to a potential new race.

@Arch: You're in. =P

@Arc: A good point, though whoever or whatever transported you into this world made it so you weren't some nobody peasant. Instead you're like all (at least in our heads) level 1 PC's, a hero of epic proportion, waiting to become a hero of infinite fame!

For instance, you'll find out the elf described in the last post is a Bard that has high Cha and Dex, mid Int and Wis and looooooooow Str and Con. Not too much of a spoiler since you'll find it all out pretty straight away. That character is me. mrgreen

I just love the idea of being able to control Magic. Psion's are pretty cool too for similar reasons, but not when compared to Arcana. Then Bard because I'd say I'm quite charismatic, and do a music degree. Elf purely because they're my favourite race. =P

You act like that IRL, Joe? confused

On Arc's point, may I suggest something which PROBABLY won't be very popular. What about lower-than-22-points point buy? I think all monsters are designed with 22 point buy in mind, so perhaps going easier on the encounters to compensate?

Or, a lower point buy but faster progression?

Just ideas I'm throwing out there.

I'm okay with 22 point buy, I plan to counter it with less than optimal skill and feat selection.

Are you going to be playing a character in the party, joedude?

Naturally, the easy option for insta-power are warlock and some of the wilder psionic classes, like ardent or battlemind. I'm tempted to run a backseat driver warlord who does most of his attacks through other people, but I think if I were dropped in a fantasy setting, bard would be a more attractive choice for me.

This idea seems almost like a modified episode of "Captain N" back in the day but with a twist in you don't get teleported as yourself but as a different creature that is you. It actually in concept is a good idea & I really haven't seen this too often... well, least the campaigns I've seen which is quite a few after spying the guilds on this site & playing a few.

I do see the high intelligence & crap charisma crap too happening or say I'm a typical fast p***k whose strength puts a baby to shame, & a typical brute douchebag whose strength, constitution, & dexterity is through the roof with crap rest stats.

I just got a question though: are you including the racial features when you pick your race, or do you already have a plan involved with the features? That's my only question before I join (if you don't mind if I join) because I dunno if it's me or not but I just need that clarified for me.

Well, there's always the "Raised by Humans" background, which could fit any of us

And make a dwarf battlemind have the same type of stats of a human battlemind for example (including features which I think is how the racial crap is happening... least it sounds like to me & if so I have to laugh).
Then again, isn't that background being overused? Or something similar like my half-elf warlord being raised by dwarfs?

@Rain:
What can I say? I love all those things. Though in all honesty if this scenario actually DID happen to me, I'd probably end up doing something like that. If it happened to me why wouldn't it have happened to someone else? I definitely couldn't handle that by myself.

As for the point thing, you can if you'd like to, but I won't be enforcing it.

@Arc:
I'm definitely going to play a party member as well, though unsure if I'll make a full PC or just a monster NPC for myself in battles. Though if you want to play a bard go ahead and if I do make a PC, I'll create something that compliments you as opposed to copying you.

@Dragon:
Yes, I'm including the racial features. It's still you, but you've been transformed into something else.

@Everyone:
Try not to imagine it like some one picked you up and carried you through the 6th dimension, but more like you got reborn there. That is, it's still you with your thoughts and mannerisms and memories and emotions; but you've been put into this strange new land, into a strange new body with strange new powers. Whether those powers be ones of Arcane might, Psionic control, Primal understanding, or just plain brute strength and keen skill that would have never been possible in this dimension.

Basically, don't feel you have to make your characters worse than ones you'd make in any other games. I personally don't see the point in playing games where you purposefully handicap the PC's. If you want to make the game harder ask your DM to give you harder fights. =P

Also, with the backgrounds, I'm going to go ahead and say you can't gain any background benefits. Really doesn't work with this setting! >.< Though don't worry, you won't be unrewarded for writing one. wink

Go ahead and be a bard
I'm a changeling swordmage!
PostPosted: Fri Jan 07, 2011 3:44 am
So a bard & a swordmage, & now an elf wizard (me, but I'll be working on it ASAP, but again, if wanted).
Hey, what can I say? I've always had a short fuse & am known for rebelling.
However, I am conservative in general, & am currently saving up for an eventual construction degree. Also, I refuse to think inside the box. I've always had the belief that if I don't think unorthodox, then I'm doing something wrong. I also am a very self-conscious person who cares more about others than himself, who also is a pretty nice guy IF you don't set me off.
I've always thought arcane would be extremely effective because of how versatile the power really is. From causing cold slippery hell beneath your enemies to throwing deadly fireballs, among many elemental spells. Hell, arcane specialists can turn the tide of battle.
Physically, being 5'7" & 120 lbs shows that I got pitiful strength (you mind if I have a -1 to my strength modifier?) but my size does allow me to focus on my best physical trait... dexterity.
Why elvish? Same reason the topic creator has.
Edit: I dunno how I'm going to be able to show via bibliography for Improved initiative or expanded spellbook & I think when my char is reborn is when I'll pick his spells that are in his spellbook. I dunno. I'm struggling about my feat right now.
Here's my char for now (and note I do need a bit of help, but it's minor depending on how you look at it): http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=265688

You've got the sheet set to private. On the sheets page click the small white eye left of the characters name and click it so it turns black. =) Also when it comes to feats, next to the feat input section there's a column entitled "Loc.", since those feats are Player's Handbook 1, just put PHB in that section so I know it's from PHB (not major deal if you don't, it's more for if you pick some crazy dragon mag feat that I've never heard of. I know the ones from the 3 PHB's pretty well anyways).

@Nayr:
Go away! You smell!

I see what you meant. Sorry bout that man.
Misunderstanding much?
Also, you care if I put a -1 (or a roll of 8 or 9) to strength because of my own physical description of myself?
I've decided about the power crap too. I'll add them once my char takes a look in his spellbook for the first time & put those powers there. If I just put them on there before my char is reborn I don't think it'd make much sense for the time being.
Hey, it's a uniqueness I'm trying to imply & make it seem like he just learned this crap.
Edit: I'm using my real first name, but I have not decided on a last. I'll figure one out when I introduce myself.
The name 'DragonKid' as you see I have is only my user because I am a huge Dragon Quest fan & went with a creature that suits my personality, hence why I also put my charisma low.
