So, what's all this gobbledegook about airport security?

Living in NC and attending school in Boston, I do quite a bit of flying. And twice, now, I've been asked to step aside for whatever reason. The first time, for fall break in October, I got pulled aside because I was arguing that my luggage that was "too heavy" for carry on leaving Boston, was just fine, entering, and I had lightened it (turned out, carry on there, is determined by size, not weight). So, they pulled me aside and made me do the x-ray scan. K. I was more pissed that I was being scanned at four in the morning, and had to pay twenty-five bucks to check my luggage, than I was that I was "being violated." Not once did I feel violated. And, you know, I've nothing of which to be ashamed. xD

Then, coming back in, today, I tried to walk through with my contact solution in my pocket, not thinking, I'll admit, and so, I got the pat-down. Again. More pissed that it was a waste of time that that a stranger was patting my crotch. It was actually a rather inefficient patdown, and the pats to my crotch, butt, and anywhere "sensitive" was with the backhand (again, REALLY inefficient), and really "businesslike;" pretty sure no one gets their rocks off by touching a stranger's crotch with the back of his or her hand.

So, I can say, personally, not speaking for everyone, having been both scanned and patted, that it really isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be. It's more of an annoyance that you're being searched when you have somewhere to be, than a "violation" of some kind.

I went through one of those full body scanners last September coming home from Alberta. It doesn't bother me one bit, hell I kind of think it's funny some guy making just around 9 bucks an hour has to be subjected to my nudity. rofl

It's not as big a deal as people make out, they have the same security measures at nightclubs.

Except taking your shoes off, if they still do that.

They still have the shoe thing.

The fact of the matter is that, no matter how much people groan about it, there were two separate incidents during which a man tried to ignite explosives in his shoe, and another man ignited (failed) explosives in his underwear. There's a basis for these searches.

I was ten years old, living in New York City when the twin towers were hit; if I can fly safely, but for some extra, annoying security, I'll take it.

That's pretty much how I feel.
Like some TSA offical said,
if you asked someone if they'd rather be on a plane full of people who were patted down and checked properly or with people who weren't as thoroughly checked..you'd go for the first.

Honestly, I don't really care if I get patted down. They're just doing their jobs. I would feel like iffy about a guy doing it, but since females check females, males, males, I don't really care. The media just made it seem like getting onto an airplane was like walking through hallways of groping hands.

Chastity is a forign subject in this day and age, but I don't want strange people stuffing their hands in my crotch to make sure I'm not carrying a bomb.

For me to be touched and felt up by some woman I don't know is just the same as being touched and felt up by some man I don't know. You don't know if they're gay or straight, or what kind of kinks they've got.

Have you heard they're making women with prosthetic breasts take them out and feel them? What happens to women wearing pads? Do they have to strip down and give their half-used sanitary napkins to the TSA?

I'm not flying anywhere until this bullshit is resolved.

@Ojos- Yeah, the two I've had to be subjected to, I just went along with; those people are only doing their jobs, and really, protest, as I learned, just makes your life harder, and makes their job more annoying. I saw a man removed from our flight because he didn't want to get patted down.

@Lychee- No, they made a woman do that; my mom has had a prosthetic breast since her breast cancer forced her to have one removed, and she's never had to take it out for a search, and she flies just as much as I do. I'm not quite sure about the circumstances, but in that case you mentioned, I think she couldn't clear the sensor, so they made her remove it. Summat like that.

There was also a case of a man whose catheter bag they burst, leaving him soaked in his own urine in front of a crowded terminal. In his case, he had informed the worker doing the search, that prodding his bag would cause the seal to rupture.

As for women on their periods, no, they don't have to remove their pads. That would be disgusting, ridiculous, and horribly unreasonable.

No system is perfect, and due to incompetence, human or otherwise, there are always going to be flaws. Those are extreme cases, and the reason they're news is because they stick out. It's not like such things happen every day, or even very often. And again, with the pats, I can tell you, it's not groping. They pat curtly, non-intrusively, quickly, and use the backs of their hands for sensitive areas, and very abruptly there. Like I said, my only problem with the pat-downs is that they're so afraid of offending, that they're very half-assed.

I don't care about getting felt up.. it's their job. I don't b***h about my doctor having to touch my v****a once a year! lol
I'd rather get felt up and know that I'm going to be on a safe flight then be on a flight that they let ANYONE on without checking them first.

It's sad that the world has come to this.. but it's what needs to be done for safety reasons now.. if you don't want to fly somewhere then don't.. you can easily take a bus or a boat.. might take a lot longer to get to where you are going.. but you won't get felt up if it really bothers you THAT much.

The thing is that all this stuff is show. I know a guy (who, by the way, is Middle Eastern) who contracts mechanic work for an airline. He says they let him drive out onto the tarmac without so much as checking his ID or what's in his truck. So yeah. It's BS.

And I'm with Lychee. I'm not going to fly so long as I have to be subjected to that crap. I hate being touched at all, regardless of the intentions of the toucher.

I'm honestly more uncomfortable with the new body scans that are being put up in a few airports.

I'm find with patting and metal detectors and other types of security measures, but I don't want someone to see through my clothes even if the image isn't super detailed. It's still detailed enough that you see pretty much everything.

I have no problem with added security as long as I can always opt for the patdown instead of the body scan. I don't need any extra X-rays coming my way.
