How well can you recognize a fake smile? Well, this test might help you find out, if you aren't sure. You're given 20 samples, and you get to see each smile once. You guess whether it's fake or genuine. I got 16/20 correct. : D As I was going through it, I found myself feeling a little bit paranoid, wondering why so many of the smiles seemed fake. It occurred to me that maybe I'm just suspicious of people, which makes me sad. Anyway, discuss: -How'd you do? -What seemed to tip you off the most? -Do you feel like you can "read" people? -How good are you at faking a smile? -Etc.

My result: You got 17 out of 20 correct.
I was mostly just looking to see how fast they stopped smiling or how fast they stopped laughing to try and tell if it was fake or not.
Since some of the smiles did look like the person was forcing them.
I actually did not think that my score would be that high sweatdrop
A lot of people seem to force their smiles and that to me is annoying. Like for example: You might say something and then the other person laughs and you think "I did not even say anything funny confused "
I mean, why smile if you are not even happy? Though I guess there are times when it is fine to fake smile, like when you want to cheer someone up...etc.

To you from failing hands we throw the torch; be yours to hold it high I got 15 right, which surprised me. The big tell is if the person's ears move (hard to see when the ears are covered by hair). I expected to do much more poorly, as I am terrible in "grown-up" social situations.

The Asian one was unfair. D8< I still got it right, but it was hard to see the muscles in her eyes.
I went by the eyes to determine genuine smiles. My overall score was 17/20.
@Troll: Sometimes it's to be polite or to possibly diffuse an awkward situation, for example if someone told a really, really terrible joke. I rather pull up a smile from a pleasant memory or fantastic joke then to just force it.

I got 15/20 right.
And, on the subject of fake smiles, I do it all the damn time. I work at Walmart, so... I kinda have to. Someone cuts me off while I'm pushing a line of carts? I resist the urge to smack them upside the head and throw on a fake smile.

I got 16/20. Which, is kind of surprising to me, since about half-way through, I felt like I was getting a lot wrong o__O;
I could usually tell by whether they were smiling before/after the full time.
Personally, I fake-smile all the time, usually just to be polite (eg: when saying hello to someone). It actually takes quite a bit to get me to smile genuinely :/

15/20
Seems average. Movement of the lower lip and head bob are what I used.

I got 12/20. I remembered halfway through that the eyes tell a lot with smiles.
I still failed. xd

I'm not very good at reading faces, I don't usually maintain eye contact.

I got 15. I think that wrinkles kind of give it away in some faces. But... some were hard to tell. There was this one guy where you could actually see his throat move a little when he laughed.

I got 11 out of 20. I actually learned how to tell the difference between fake and real smiles in psychology 101, but apparently I suck at it. xD

I...what? O.O I got 18/20.
I am genuinely shocked at my score. Some of the later ones I felt were a little bit of both which made it hard to choose for those, so they were partial guesses. Also, I'm horrid in social situations and tend to be very oblivious (though I think it helped that I'm not actually interacting with these people).
But yeah. I tended to focus on the eyes and head movement. >.>
