This isn't a really long riddle, but it is still a riddle. So I can just put it here, right?
Okay, so...
What number has the powerful effect on the life of man (and, of course, woman) and why?

As long as the riddle is unanswered you can sit on the answer. You don't need to give it away by the 11th... but we'll see. Someone may get it yet. We'ver very smart people in this guild. wink

I'm probably going too far into this, but...
(surprised Kero hasn't jumped all over this yet....) I was thinking zero:
If you have $0 you're in trouble. You've got it made if you have $1,000,000,000.
Also, like infinity, zero is a philosophical prose--can you assign a value to nothing? Is nothing something, and if so, is it significant?
From this concept sprouted Taosim--a religion of fullness and emptiness.
It has also allowed the advancements of mathematics. Without zero, decimals cannot exist; .1 and 1 would be seen as the same number.
On the Kelvin temperature scale, zero is the coldest possible temperature (negative temperatures exist but are not actually colder), whereas on the Celsius scale, zero is arbitrarily defined to be at the freezing point of water.
In physics, the zero-point energy is the lowest possible energy that a quantum mechanical physical system may possess and is the energy of the ground state of the system.
Moreover, zero makes up half of binary code that dictates how the very computer you are reading my answer from responds to the press of a button.
I know, my post was long winded, but I love the number 0. It's fascinating. heart

First off, as a "Thank God" -moment for Lyssan, it is not 42. mrgreen
Second..HOLY MOTHER OF GOD eek You really love zero, don't you?
But no, I'm not talking about zero. Or googol or even googolplex. It's none of those.
This is, as I said, a real facepalm. mrgreen
As a little tip: this number is used almost every day by every human. No exceptions (well, of course except for the dead confused ).

It's not a time or a date. So it's not 9/11 or anything like that.
