I know at least Sapph saw this one coming. But this is just a thread to discuss Lord of the Flies because it seems the two of us could talk for days on the subject and I'm sure we're not the only ones.

*When discussing the movies, please indicate which version it is if you can remember. (1963 or 1990. It's easy to tell the difference, one is in black and white and the other is not. And Jack is quite hot in one before he puts on his warpaint >>. Even though he's supposed to be "ugly without sillyness")

Okay~ Discuss. biggrin ALSO! Please note that there may be spoilers if you haven't finished the book. This will not be spoiler free. neutral So prepare yourself. (But who hasn't read it if they wanted to or not? I think it's mandatory in high school.)
I'm on a really big Lord of the Flies kick right now, especially because I have the version of the book with the analysis of the story in the back and I'm reading it again.
Okay, to start off having an adult being on an island to begin with was arguably the worst change the second movie made. Having an adult (albeit an incapacitated one) made it not like the original paradise described by the book. They felt that they were completely free without taboos, no one to scold them, no one to tell them what's what. Because really, isn't that all a child wants? A time with no parents? They must have been having a field day! They had an entire island to themselves! But in the 1990 movie, there is an adult. I don't believe he's mentioned that often (I haven't seen the movie in a couple of years... my memory of it is foggy) but there is still an adult there. (For a bit. I believe he dies or is just... not heard from.) So it's not quite the complete paradise of the book. It's still lovely in their eyes, but I remember that I didn't feel their excitement like in the book. (As I said, I don't quite remember the movie all that well, though.)

And now you have me listening to You're Gonna Go Far, Kid >> *loves that song to death* But yeah... I knew it was about the book o3o Especially since they blatantly say "Lord of the Flies" in the song *nods* It's probably one of my favorite songs of all time. <3
Anywho. An adult on the island completely changes the whole POINT to the book. I always took the book as meaning, given the chance, humans will more likely turn into animals without the structure of a true society. Without anyone to shape them, the children turned themselves into monsters... And I think it really showed something about how our inner being would act. I dunno, I focused a lot on that in a lot of my essays. It's the whole "raised by wolves" theory. Maybe we already ARE wolves. Rah.
My favorite characters would have to have been Simon and Piggy, though. I felt like I could relate to Piggy a little. Socially awkward, not really any friends, tended to lash out in his own way because he really didn't know how to act otherwise. No one really liked him and I felt bad. I think I cried when he died.
Now, I shall go on an epic journey to find the book neutral *skips away to dig through every corner of the house* I wonder if I still even have it... Good thing it's not extremely long. I can probably re-read it in a week-ish.
