Hey everyone, I need some help with a school project. It is really simple just fill out a survey on mental health (that I will post) and either post your awnsers or send them to me via private messege.
All that I require is your age and gender, now I know that there are some people not comfortable with giving out any kind of personal information. If you don't feel comfortable posting it in the guild you can send it to me privatly or not included it at all, but I reassure you this is only for a school project and nothing more. Once the project is done (which will be Dec. 1st) than I will delete any messeges sent to myself and this topic.
Thank you! mrgreen

Age: 21 Gender: Male
1. Complete the following sentence: "When I think of mentally ill people I think of..."
Generally I think of people with downs syndrom or similar.
2. What do you believe are the most common symptoms of schizophrenia?
Talking to oneself?
3. What do you think causes schizophrenia?
High levels of stress combined with some kind of disaster (be it breaking your leg or seeing your whole family die, its dependant on your person)
4. Would you protest if a group home (like a halfway house) for mentally ill people were to be established in a home in your neighborhood? EXPLAIN why or why not.
No as I work with Mentally ill people.
5. Are there any mental disorders you’ve heard about of which you question the validity? (Such as ‘postpartum depression’ or ‘ADHD’) EXPLAIN why you question this.
ADD as they call it as it seems to be prescribed to any kid capable of laughing during class.
6. In your view, is homosexuality a mental disorder? Explain why you think it is/is not.
No because it falls upon other animals as well.
7. Can sexual orientation be changed through therapy? Explain.
No, therapy can clarify who you are but not change you in any way.
8. Do you believe mentally disordered persons are responsible for their disorders? If so, to what degree?
nobody is responsible for what they are born with.
9. Is the insanity defense an appropriate legal defense for a mentally ill person who has committed a crime? Explain why or why not.
Depends on how "Mentally Ill" said person is, if the person can understand what has been done then the Insanity defense is no approriate. In turn jail may not be the best punishment either.
10. How often do you believe the insanity defense is used or attempted? (Estimate a percentage of cases)
20% as a guess.
11. In cases where the insanity defense is attempted, how often do you think it is successful? (Estimate a percentage of cases)
80% of the time as it is difficult to prove insanity as fake.

Age: 23 Gender: Female
1. Complete the following sentence: "When I think of mentally ill people I think of..." People who are on anti-depressants, anti-psychotics, or any other such drug for a lifetime.
2. What do you believe are the most common symptoms of schizophrenia? Audio and visual hallucinations, distorted reality.
3. What do you think causes schizophrenia? A chemical imbalance, faulty nerves (as in the nervous system), or a lack of certain brain matter.
4. Would you protest if a group home (like a halfway house) for mentally ill people were to be established in a home in your neighborhood? EXPLAIN why or why not. I would not as everyone has a right to be helped with any and all problems.
5. Are there any mental disorders you’ve heard about of which you question the validity? (Such as ‘postpartum depression’ or ‘ADHD’) EXPLAIN why you question this. No there are not, I do believe that some things are being over diagnosed such as ADHD(just because a child cannot sit through a boring book does not mean they have a disorder it means they're bored) or misdiagnosed, but the validity of them in people who truly do have the disorder does not diminish.
6. In your view, is homosexuality a mental disorder? Explain why you think it is/is not. Calling it a mental disorder is kind of harsh in my eyes. Is it determined by the brain? I will say usually. I know of some people who truly DO choose what they want, but there still has to be an attraction in the mind to do so.
7. Can sexual orientation be changed through therapy? Explain. Yes. The ways in which to do it I view are wrong because the only way to really change it is to do something harsh such as shock therapy or classical conditioning. Neither really work in changing the person however it more takes their desires associated with a "bad" feeling making the person not want to do such action, eventually pushing the thought out of their mind.
8. Do you believe mentally disordered persons are responsible for their disorders? If so, to what degree? Responsible for their disorders? No. Responsible for their actions when they know they have said disorder, some even when they don't, Yes.
9. Is the insanity defense an appropriate legal defense for a mentally ill person who has committed a crime? Explain why or why not. I believe it is because there is something wrong in the brain that led them to commit the crime. Perhaps, in their mind, they saw something that needed to be gotten rid of, where as in reality it was a ICU wing at a hospital. Was it their fault? Well yes they killed/hurt the people. Should they be punished the same as a cold blooded murderer? No because again they had something that made them perceive something that wasn't there and therefore needs to get help.
10. How often do you believe the insanity defense is used or attempted? (Estimate a percentage of cases) Attempted, I would say about 50% of the time it's attempted.
11. In cases where the insanity defense is attempted, how often do you think it is successful? (Estimate a percentage of cases) I'll drop that down to about 23% successful.

Age: 38 Gender: Female
1. Complete the following sentence: "When I think of mentally ill people I think of..." People dealing with problems that often go mis- or un-diagnosed and who will have a tough time in life because mental illness is like a taboo to many people.
2. What do you believe are the most common symptoms of schizophrenia? auditory hallucinations
3. What do you think causes schizophrenia? either a chemical imbalance in the brain or something like a 'short circuit' in the brain (or a combination of both)
4. Would you protest if a group home (like a halfway house) for mentally ill people were to be established in a home in your neighborhood? EXPLAIN why or why not. I would like to say no because there is a need for homes like this and they have to be built some where but there's a part of me that says maybe yes because I'm a home owner and would like to move eventually and I don't my property value to decrease to a point where I can't sell my house for what it's worth.
5. Are there any mental disorders you’ve heard about of which you question the validity? (Such as ‘postpartum depression’ or ‘ADHD’) EXPLAIN why you question this. I believe there are several conditions that are being over diagnosed: ADD/ADHD do exist but not to the degree they are being diagnosed. Too many people expect kids to be miniature adults but they aren't. They are kids and need to be able to act like kids. Too many parents/teachers just don't want to deal with kids and how real kids act. Autism/Aspergers do exist but not to the degree they are being diagnosed. Again, we are human beings and have a wide variety of traits. Just because I act a little different and don't interact well with people, that doesn't mean it's a diagnosable condition that needs treatment. There are many conditions that I feel are 'excuses' for behaving different that the person giving you the label.
6. In your view, is homosexuality a mental disorder? Explain why you think it is/is not. No. It happens in the animal kingdom and across all societies of human beings.
7. Can sexual orientation be changed through therapy? Explain. No. You can be brainwashed into anything by so called 'therapy' or treatment (or by society, churches, cults, or authority figures) but that doesn't mean it changes anything in the core of your being.
8. Do you believe mentally disordered persons are responsible for their disorders? If so, to what degree? I don't think I can say yes or no to such a blanket statement. Responsible as in causing it? Most often I say no. However, there are certain times where your actions feed in to a diagnosable disorder and so there is some degree of personal responsibility there. Once you become aware of your disorder I believe the degree of responsibility for coping with your disorder goes up greatly.
9. Is the insanity defense an appropriate legal defense for a mentally ill person who has committed a crime? Explain why or why not. Yes, it can be. If a person is mentally ill to the point where they were completely unable to understand the ramifications of their actions then that does not satisfy the requirement needed to be found criminally guilty so it's an appropriate legal defense. I don't feel, however, that anyone should use an insanity plea for a crime that occurred during a 'fit of passion' (such as walking in on your spouse having sex with someone and you walk over and beat them to death) unless of course they are actually mentally retarded to the degree that they don't understand that beating someone can kill them.
10. How often do you believe the insanity defense is used or attempted? (Estimate a percentage of cases) For a wild guess I would say 5% attempted
11. In cases where the insanity defense is attempted, how often do you think it is successful? (Estimate a percentage of cases) Another wild guess and I'll say 1%

Age: 22 Gender: Female 1. Complete the following sentence: "When I think of mentally ill people I think of..."Anyone whose thinking patterns are not biologically normal, generally depression or OCD. 2. What do you believe are the most common symptoms of schizophrenia?3. What do you think causes schizophrenia?I don't think anyone really knows for sure, but there is correlation with childhood trauma as well as some parasites found commonly in house cats. 4. Would you protest if a group home (like a halfway house) for mentally ill people were to be established in a home in your neighborhood? EXPLAIN why or why not.I wouldn't mind at all, I would probably support the idea. I believe that for mentally ill people to integrate into society they need to feel like useful and productive members of the community and I would also support local employers actively attempting to hire people from the house. 5. Are there any mental disorders you’ve heard about of which you question the validity? (Such as ‘postpartum depression’ or ‘ADHD’) EXPLAIN why you question this.No. I question the wisdom of medicating a few of them, medicating people should only be to assist teaching them the ability to cope with the world, not instead of. 6. In your view, is homosexuality a mental disorder? Explain why you think it is/is not.It is possible, it may also be a general biological disorder or even have an evolutionary reason. I don't think we as humans have enough information on the subject to say for sure. 7. Can sexual orientation be changed through therapy? Explain. No, there are definitive biological reasons for sexual orientation as well as psychological. To try and change someone's sexual orientation through therapy would likely damage them psychologically more than help. 8. Do you believe mentally disordered persons are responsible for their disorders? If so, to what degree?Sometimes depression and the like are perpetuated and even caused by the way a person thinks and behaves. Generally though it is the way a person copes with the disorder that is their responsibility, not the disorder itself. 9. Is the insanity defense an appropriate legal defense for a mentally ill person who has committed a crime? Explain why or why not.Generally I would say no, but a full psychiatric evaluation would show whether a person should be seeking treatment or sent to a correctional facility. Sending a mentally ill person to a correctional facility can be dangerous for the person who committed the crime as well as the other inmates. 10. How often do you believe the insanity defense is used or attempted? (Estimate a percentage of cases) Probably 5-10% of the time in criminal court, more the more violent a crime is, though legitimate use would probably be somewhere around 1 or 2% 11. In cases where the insanity defense is attempted, how often do you think it is successful? (Estimate a percentage of cases)I would assume not very often probably only about 5-10% of the time. -Formerly La Belle Isolde-

anyone with a psychological problem....(including myself (A.D.D)
2. What do you believe are the most common symptoms of schizophrenia?
Seeing/hearing things that are not real, delusions, and intense anxiety.
3. What do you think causes schizophrenia?
that depends, schizophrenia is a term use for multiple disorders...
4. Would you protest if a group home (like a halfway house) for mentally ill people were to be established in a home in your neighborhood? EXPLAIN why or why not.
Not really... there is one not to far from my house actually XD honestly, depends on the level of security they provide..
5. Are there any mental disorders you’ve heard about of which you question the validity? (Such as ‘postpartum depression’ or ‘ADHD’) EXPLAIN why you question this.
Stockholm Syndrome (just cant see why you wouldn't fight back)
6. In your view, is homosexuality a mental disorder? Explain why you think it is/is not.
No... its simply a preference...
7. Can sexual orientation be changed through therapy? Explain.
yes... but i don't think it should.... you cant rewire how you were made...
8. Do you believe mentally disordered persons are responsible for their disorders? If so, to what degree?
to an extent... some people can help themselves, but choose to use there position favorably out of laziness...
9. Is the insanity defense an appropriate legal defense for a mentally ill person who has committed a crime? Explain why or why not.
yes... but i think they are to leaniant... and since there is no way to prove that someone is/is not mentally ill.... some people really cant help it...
10. How often do you believe the insanity defense is used or attempted? (Estimate a percentage of cases)
Ummmm... id have to say over 50% (55%?)
11. In cases where the insanity defense is attempted, how often do you think it is successful? (Estimate a percentage of cases)
20%?
(im close friends with someone who has schizophrenia... in case that affects some part of the test...)

Age: 22 Gender: Male
1. Complete the following sentence: "When I think of mentally ill people I think of..." People who are suffering from an illness that is not physiological in nature. Mood disorders, anxiety or phobias, hallucinations, etc.
2. What do you believe are the most common symptoms of schizophrenia? Mood swings, hallucinations.
3. What do you think causes schizophrenia? I'm not sure. I would guess a combination of genetic predisposition, environment/life experiences, maybe some sort of biological trigger...? Bad luck. x3
4. Would you protest if a group home (like a halfway house) for mentally ill people were to be established in a home in your neighborhood? EXPLAIN why or why not. Protest? No. They'd be a drastic improvement over some of my current neighbours. It's not like they're going to come into my house and do something to me. xD
5. Are there any mental disorders you’ve heard about of which you question the validity? (Such as ‘postpartum depression’ or ‘ADHD’) EXPLAIN why you question this. I don't know. I sometimes wonder if some things are over-diagnosed, and I am certain that doctors are often quick to slap a label on you for the sake of having "diagnosed" the problem. But I'm not qualified to decide these things.
6. In your view, is homosexuality a mental disorder? Explain why you think it is/is not. No. It's just a preference. Some people like apples, some like oranges. Even if most people don't like brussel sprouts, it doesn't mean the ones who do are ill.
7. Can sexual orientation be changed through therapy? Explain. No. If someone is bound and determined to deny their true sexuality, that's one thing; it doesn't make them straight, though.
8. Do you believe mentally disordered persons are responsible for their disorders? If so, to what degree? Responsible for? As in, brought it upon themselves? I don't know. Some people may indulge in their flaws more than they should, but it's not their fault they're sick. They should be responsible for their behaviour, though.
9. Is the insanity defense an appropriate legal defense for a mentally ill person who has committed a crime? Explain why or why not. It depends on the situation. Look at what happened with Vince Li. If they are found not guilty due to insanity, as long as they are placed into long-term care, I think that's appropriate.
10. How often do you believe the insanity defense is used or attempted?(Estimate a percentage of cases) I don't know. Less than 1%? I don't follow these sorts of things.
11. In cases where the insanity defense is attempted, how often do you think it is successful? (Estimate a percentage of cases) I really have no idea. 10%?

Age: 18 Gender: Female
1. Complete the following sentence: "When I think of mentally ill people I think of..."
I think of people that have some sort of disability and need assistance dealing with it.
2. What do you believe are the most common symptoms of schizophrenia?
Hallucinations
3. What do you think causes schizophrenia?
Nobody knows? I always thought of something along the lines of extreme stress however.
4. Would you protest if a group home (like a halfway house) for mentally ill people were to be established in a home in your neighborhood? EXPLAIN why or why not.
Of course not! Hey, if they're getting help and aren't being thrown out on the streets, great. smile I'm all for it.
5. Are there any mental disorders you’ve heard about of which you question the validity? (Such as ‘postpartum depression’ or ‘ADHD’) EXPLAIN why you question this.
Well, I believe they exist, but today, doctors over diagnose young boys especially with ADHD and ADD and medicate them and I hardly believe that this is what they have. Some, yes. But most, no.
6. In your view, is homosexuality a mental disorder? Explain why you think it is/is not.
No. It's just how you are. It's not a disorder, there's nothing wrong with it. Just because it's not what most people think is "normal", what is normal?
7. Can sexual orientation be changed through therapy? Explain.
No. It's how you are and you just have to accept that.
8. Do you believe mentally disordered persons are responsible for their disorders? If so, to what degree?
many many cases, no they are not responsible. They can't help how they were born.
9. Is the insanity defense an appropriate legal defense for a mentally ill person who has committed a crime? Explain why or why not.
Only to a certain degree. Some claims of mentally ill for like a serial killer is outrageous.
10. How often do you believe the insanity defense is used or attempted? (Estimate a percentage of cases)
Too many times, maybe at least 50%?
11. In cases where the insanity defense is attempted, how often do you think it is successful? (Estimate a percentage of cases)
Too many times, maybe at least 30%. They want the case to end quickly and want an easy way out.

*shrug* dunno if you even need it anymore but;
Age: 19 Gender: Female
1. Complete the following sentence: "When I think of mentally ill people I think of..." People who aren't capable of understanding the difference between right and wrong (legally), people who aren't capable of emotionally connecting with people, people who have learning disabilities, people who don't feel the typical emotions associated with actions (example: the person who is happy if someone is hurt or if they've caused them harm instead of sad or guilty).
2. What do you believe are the most common symptoms of schizophrenia? Feeling disconnected from others; seeing or hearing things that aren't really there and believing they are - or seeing/hearing things that aren't there and understanding they're not real but still seeing/hearing them; severe mood swings; depression.
3. What do you think causes schizophrenia? Either genetic or caused by severe trauma.
4. Would you protest if a group home (like a halfway house) for mentally ill people were to be established in a home in your neighborhood? EXPLAIN why or why not. No, I would not protest. If people need help, they should have a place to get it near their loved ones.
5. Are there any mental disorders you’ve heard about of which you question the validity? (Such as ‘postpartum depression’ or ‘ADHD’) EXPLAIN why you question this. I question the validity of some ADHD diagnoses, but only because parents are quick to medicate their children if it means they'll have an easier time raising them.
6. In your view, is homosexuality a mental disorder? Explain why you think it is/is not. No, it's not. Mental disorders internally impair the person that is suffering from them. Homosexuality does not impair the person who is homosexual unless an outside source treats them differently. That is not an internal impairment.
7. Can sexual orientation be changed through therapy? Explain. No, because it's not a mental disorder. Also, I know parents who have tried to "cure" their homosexual children with therapy, it doesn't work.
8. Do you believe mentally disordered persons are responsible for their disorders? If so, to what degree? If they have no control over the mental disorder, then they are not responsible for it. If they do, then they aren't completely responsible, but should be held partly accountable. I say this because even if someone "has control" over their mental disorder, it's called a mental disorder because it affects them mentally - and in spite of how much control they may think they have... it's very hard to have complete control.
9. Is the insanity defense an appropriate legal defense for a mentally ill person who has committed a crime? Explain why or why not. Yes. If they weren't able to control their actions, or did not have the capability to understand what they did -- putting them in prison with the people who are able and do have the capabilities to understand what they've done is unfair. They will not be treated as equals and prison may not be able to teach them that what they've done is wrong. After all, prison is supposed to be for rehabilitating. A hospital is more fit for people who are mentally ill.
10. How often do you believe the insanity defense is used or attempted? (Estimate a percentage of cases) I wouldn't doubt if the insanity defense is attempted in 55 - 65% of cases.
11. In cases where the insanity defense is attempted, how often do you think it is successful? (Estimate a percentage of cases) 35%
