My youngest sister and two friends made a date to go see the new Twilight movie, New Moon, on it's opening at midnight last night.

I haven't had much contact with it, and I was wondering if anyone else had and what their opinions on it were.

I enjoyed the series eventhough it has more holes in it than Swiss cheese. However, I was completely appalled by the first movie, so I swore not to see the second one. Still, I am morbidly curious. sweatdrop

Chibi, what do you mean by holes? Plot holes? Like the kind where you say, "But I thought she was -" and "If that were true, then . . ."?

And how were you appalled by the first movie, I'm curious.

What I mean is that there are many many inconsistencies within the books. Scythe and I actually got into an argument about the series in the outrageous rumor game. Here are some things that I listed in that thread. 3nodding

1. Edward keeps assuring Bella that she is different from all of the other girls her age; however, she seems very typical in just about all respects.
2. Bella mentions that his speech is old fashioned as if she were from another era. While Edward does retain many old-fashioned social customs, be speaks just like everyone else.
3. The vampires have too many things that just don't quite fit. What's with the sparkly skin? Also, they have too many strengths. They need more weaknesses! They are just too happy and perfect! Not to mention that they are practically invincible! And yet, even with all of these strengths, they talk about being vampires as bad things. icon_xp.gif
4. The vampires think too quickly and their memories are perfect; therefore, they should be the most miserable people on the face of the planet. Plus, none of the vampires ever seem to get bored or show any dismay at the passage of time though they don't flow with it. There is nothing to work forward to or to attain in life anymore. Why are they not all suicidal or something? Surely they can't just be contented by watching football and building houses out of cards! They just aren't very believable as vampires.
5. Edward is so emo that it's painful. However, it is satisfying to the female reader to see a guy who is so torn up emotionally over his undying love for the one he loves. Most girls only dream of being loved that intensely.

Now to the movie... My problem with that is that they change things around too much and delete too much. The romance, attraction, and longing that was so present in the book was missing almost entirely in the movie. They turned Bella into a vegetarian and put in several random diner scenes that weren't in the book. They throw in vampire attacks in town throughout the movie, and there isn't a single attack in the book. The guy who plays Edward is not pretty enough. They cast people in their late 20's and early 30's to play people ages 17-24. I have a real problem with movies where they use actors in their 30s to play high school students. They changed Bella's personality quite a bit. They made Jasper look really really weird. They messed up the character descriptions of the other students. They changed the events in the book, combined scenes that were not anywhere near each other, changed the order of major events, and completely missed the entire point of the book. xp Yeah... I'm not a fan of the movie at all. And eventhough the books have many holes and inconsistencies that bother me, I still find them enjoyable and addictive for some strange reason. Just don't try to do a close reading on it.

Personally, I think the writing in the Twilight books is just atrocious. I wouldn't be caught dead reading one of those books. Ever. Don't waste your time or money.

Ok chicka I gots to disagree with you on a couple of things, first of all not all the vampires remember their past, Alice's is a little fuzzy, but anyhow as far as their ages none of the cullen children that play high school kids are not in there 30's I've reserched it lol! Robert Pattinson(Edward) is 22, Kristen Stewart(Bella) is 18, Kellan Lutz(Emmett) is 23, Nikki Reed(Rosalie) is 20, Ashley Greene(Alice) is 21, and last but in my book certainly not least Jackson Rathbone(Jasper) is the oldest at 24, and as far as how weird they made Jasper look Stephenie Meyer was the one there when they did the casting and she chose the people who she invisioned as the characters in her book, but I do agree with you on the fact that the first movie was not that good it was ok but it could have been alot better, I did however go and see it with my niece Twigirl and the second movie was not that bad they did leave a bit of detail but it was better than the first, oh and btw JASPER AND ALICE ROCK! sorry had to lol! all in all though everyone is entitled to their own opinions

They're that young? eek It must be the make-up making them look older. xp

What I meant about the memory is after they become vampires. If you will remember from Breaking Dawn, their vampire memories never fade. That is a curse in itself.

@ Chibi - Thanks for clarifying.

You would think they'd be bored out of their mind. One thing I always wondered was 'If Edward's an immortal vampire, why is he interested in a seventeen-year-old?' He'd probably be way more mature, you know, being ageless.

But yes, I can see how it is all right for pure entertainment purposes. Though I've stumbled upon a few excerpts, and I have to agree with Zellie that the writing is atrocious. xp I don't know if perfectionist-me could handle that.

I think I'll just watch the movie.

Trust me, the books are far better than the movie. Put aside the English major in you (I had to do that or else go crazy over the errors) and try to enjoy the story. The plot of the movie is changed around so much that it doesn't make any sense.

As to why a vampire who is approximately 100 years old is interested in a 17 year old girl? 17 year old girls look better than 100 year old ladies. blaugh Plus, it's to appeal to young women. I'm sure you've heard this in some class or another, but the metaphor for vampires drinking blood has long been a metaphor for having sex. Anne Rice extends this metaphor in her vampires to make drinking blood far better than sex. So basically, a bunch of teenage girls are having kinky fantasies. lol I'm pretty sure that most people haven't picked up on the correlation consciously, but I'm pretty sure that their subconsciouses have picked up on it, or else they wouldn't be so in love with vampires.

No, I just want a place to discuss it. I find it fascinating, especially now since the Vatican has voiced its disapproval of it (I'm very Catholic). Ironicly, this just makes me want to read it any more, so I know where they're coming from. sweatdrop

Oh, great. I see where this is going. Right on the heels of the Harry Potter series. "Church go-ers" everywhere will be saying how it promotes evil and all sorts of other things. Does anyone besides me remember how heated that thing got?

However, I must agree with Chibi. The movie was rather disappointing after seeing all the publicity about it. I read about half of "Twilight" before I gave it up. As an obsessive reader, I know books. It was poorly written, and was really cliche. Way too much damsel in distress.

I also agree that the vampires in these novels have way too many powers and not enough weaknesses. Every other series I have read, the vampires have several weaknesses. Most notably, the sunlight ALWAYS is harmful to them. Where did the sparkly skin come from?

I got through part of New Moon and have NO desire whatsoever to see the movie, or finish the books.
It drove me nuts, also, for more than has been stated. I also find it ironic that the Vatican would get in on it, disapproving of it and all.
I am definitely anti-twilight.
I thought it very interesting, also about what you said, Chibi. About the fantasies, very true!
I stayed out of the debate of promoting evil, and I'm trying stay out of the twilight craze. It just really bugs me how crazy people can get over things. I used to get excited about things, but I hope I haven't been as crazy as people are over twilight. I'm also trying to stay away from going overboard with the anti-twilight craziness.
