The Knot

They see you there
Staring at the wood
Looking at a favorite knot
They ask you why
Then they laugh
At your reply
“Waiting,” you say,
“For it to change.”
“It won’t ever change—
It’s against its nature,”
So they say
But you keep watching
Because one day
The knot
Will do something strange
Out of the ordinary
And you want to see
Because then
You have a secret
And you can laugh
When they ask you
Why?
