B/c fasting is abstaining from food, drink, sex and bad habits for the Sake of Allaah SWT.

And when one removes food from the equation, your body can heal and rest and remove other bothersome things..like undigested food. Your mind will clear in ways and you will become able to not only say no to other things, but you will become open in a different way to the will of God.

I've noticed that the longer I go without something, say soda, the less I crave or want it...it's like your body is able to start sorting things for itself..it lets me know what I need to eat and drink..not necessarily what I WANT to eat and drink...

I shall attempt to do this even though I am not Muslim. I have noticed I eat less during the day and more at night lately XD

It also helps you understand how it feels to be without food, causing us to be more thankful when we do...and that makes us donate and help feed the hungry...

It teaches you patience
and not to be selfish. and shows you how others without food live everyday. it teaches you not to take everything for granted. it teaches you to be thankful for what you have.

This is very true.

It reminds me how BLESSED I am to be able to have a fridge full of food, when many others do not even know when they will get their next meal (may Allah (swt) bless them & help them)

It also teaches a person patience & drive, as Waiting Dear said. ^^

It's about self dicipline. The food is avialable, but you chose not to eat. It's a great excersize in self-control. It also shows us how lucky we really are to be blessed with food.

Well...there was something I was thinking about lately...
Why won't you do something about it? Give charity to the poor people instead of sitting and starve yourself...? heart

I know it's been a while since this post, but I wanted to reply either way ^^;

We do give charity ^-^ Zakat (charity, calculated as a percentage of money that has been in your possession for a year) is obligatory on every muslim as one of the five pillars of Islam. And Ramadan is the month in which we pay Zakat =) and give sadaqa, additional charity.

In the Qur'an it is repeated several times to give charity and feed the poor and the orphans, and the captives, and it is greatly encouraged in Islam.

There is also a lovely hadith qudsi about this.

Quote:
The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: “Allah will say on the Day of Judgment, ‘O son of Adam, I was sick and you did not visit Me.’ He will say, ‘O my Lord, how could I visit You, when you are the Lord of the Worlds.’ Allah will say, ‘Did you not know that my servant so-and-so was sick and you did not visit him? Did you not know that if you had visited him, you would have found me there?’

Allah will say, ‘O son of Adam, I asked you for food and you fed me not.’ He shall say, ‘O my Lord, how could I feed you and you are the Lord of the Worlds?’ And Allah will say, ‘Did you not know that my servant so-and-so was in need of food and you did not feed him? Did you not know that if you had fed him, you would have found that to have been for me?’

‘O son of Adam, I asked you for water and you did not give me to drink.’ The man shall say, ‘O my Lord, how could I give You water, when You are the Lord of the Worlds?’ Allah will say, ‘My servant so-and-so asked you for water and you did not give him to drink water. Did you not know that if you had given him to drink, you would have found that to have been for Me.’ (Muslim, Hadith no. 4661)

I study biomedical sciences, trust me, fasting is amazing for your body. It lowers blood triglyceride levels and others. ;D

The benefits of everything in Islam FAR outweigh the harm.
Allah (swt) knows best.

Beside the religious benefit, you get physical and mental benefits as well. It just cleans up your body from all that food you eat all year. Its nice to refresh once in a while. That's why I even fast outside of Ramadan too. It's really good for your health.

And of course, it just puts you in someone elses shoes for those few hours. How some people live like that everyday, all day, a whole week, a whole month or even years. And it makes us even more thankful for what we already have. At least, it should. smile
