I used to wear the hijab when I was in 2nd grade. Why? Well, I had ugly, short hair sweatdrop and I never really liked it, so I always covered my head all the time. razz
There was a website which said that hijab was a 'pre-Jewish' tradition, and really wasn't required to wear. But girls were still suppose to dress modestly, like wearing longer shirts, etc. It was something like that.
My dad still says that I should wear the hijab when I go to school this year. sweatdrop He isn't forcing me, but he likes that, and well, I don't know. I hate stereotyping, it annoys the hell out of me. He says that I looked lovely in the hijab anyway.
Stories about the hijab? I would like to hear it.

It made me laugh that u weared the hijab because ur hair looks bad blaugh ok back to the serious. I am very sure that it is wroten in the koran that u should do it. and that is why u should. A jewish tradition? It dossen't matter. Hijab is covering yourself. It was also a christian tradition to wear clothes. That dossen't mean muslims can't. The hijab is to cover your personal parts.
Which for girls is everything, just not face.
And for mens, from stomack to knees.
I hope that you choise to wear it mrgreen

Ha, I was going to make a Hijab Discussion thread xd Looks like it would be redundant now LOL. Is okay though.
I am a non-Muslim giving serious consideration to the hijab (for clarity, the entirety of dressing modestly, not just the headscarf). And before I jump into it and try to pull off a tradition of a religion that is not mine, I want to make sure that I am doing it for the right reasons.
If anyone would be willing to discuss with me, that would be wonderful (I'll make sure people have an interest in my rambling before I go off writing a short story xd )

It's a big responsibility, especially in the heat. ><

I have to go through my whole wardrobe before thinking of hijab. Ideally, I'd like to be a full-time hijabi by next year. I'm surprised that my mom is actually supportive of the idea. Honestly, I think the USA should promote more modest dress anyway. Have you seen what some of the first graders are wearing? eek
@Vivi: There are several you tube videos concerning non-Muslim hijabis. Would you like me to put some in this thread?

The only one I'm aware of is the Non-Muslim Hijabi. And I tend to agree; I think a more modest dress should be encouraged all-around. Longer skirts, shirts without such a drastic, low cut. It kind of makes me sick when I see some of the things small children are wearing now-a-days. I didn't wear some of those styles until I was in highschool and even then I still felt kind of awkward.

You cover your form, wearing loose clothing. ^^ @ Ruby: Glad your mom is supportive, my mother calls it all nonsense. And says i'm being difficult reverting to Islam after being Christian all my life. She says i did this to upset her & my father =/ She always finds a way to make herself the center of everything...

It must be hard when your parents is not being supportive. Plus their faith towards Christians are stronger. Maybe they are too busy to try to know Islam.
But who knows when they will change. I hope they have the curiosity to learn about Islam.
Besides you are not being difficult Apple Juice. You choose to wear hijab. It is easy, faith determines what you want. Anyway, how did you response to your parents, when they disagree with you?
Edit: Wow! Great video! XD It's funny when the cat starts making noise, lol. But she's good. P:

Is there scriptural support for covering of the form? I am aware that the scriptures mention pulling cloth around you and covering your chest, but that's the only bit I know of. And how do you determine if clothing is "loose" enough? If covering the form is what is required, how do you (not you in specific; it's more of a general "you" ) explain the arm sleeves that are all stretchy and, well, kind of form-fitting? I'm sorry your mother is not accepting of your choices sad Are you close to being out on your own and not under her roof? That should hopefully make it a bit easier on ya.

Well....what I can say is, that every parent should be supportive of what decisions their children make, whether they like it or not. :l It sucks to hear that your mother, Apple, is not accepting you as a Muslim at all.
If she's trying to convert you, try to convert her.

I'm kind of sad; I don't think she's a hijabi anymore and I'm kind of curious as to why sad I found that a few of the points she raised on why she wears the head-covering were points that I already agreed with, or had not previously thought of, but agreed with as well.

I think it looks cute on people. My only muslim friend doesn't wear it, though. She thinks that as society's view on modesty changes so should traditions. On the other hand, I think traditional dress is a good way to express something that's important to someone. Hence, wear the headscarf if you feel that it makes you feel better. You're better off wearing it once-in-a-while as part of your religious identity than forcing yourself to wear it and eventually starting to identify it with negative feelings.
(Sorry if I offend anyone with my very libreal opinions about this subject, but I'm trying to give an honest opinion.)

Errm..she probably doesn't do it anymore because she got a ton of hatemail. Some sisters can get really....catty. I dont consider that girl a 'hijabi' I just consider her some girl who likes to show how many ways to wear a headscarf. Hijabi is a Muslim term, a woman who covers herself for religious reasons, not someone who wears a headscarf...it's so much more than that really. In my opinion. I like the girl, because without her videos i'd have no idea how to wear a khimar, but i'm sure she didnt get a lot of good messages ><
