Quick! Vote in the poll now! ... ... .... Okay, now that that's done, let's talk about fireworks. On July 4th, 2009, I looked up in the sky after an amazing hour of colorful fireworks. What did I see? A grey, dusty, smokey sky. I thought to myself "Do fireworks create pollution?" I meant to look this up when I got home, but I fell asleep...Anyway, how did you answer the poll? You may have thought that your answer was right, or you may have been unsure. Buzzle.com The chemicals and heavy metals used in fireworks also take their toll on the environment, sometimes contributing to water supply contamination and even acid rain. Their use also deposits physical litter on the ground and into water bodies for miles around. As such, some U.S. states and local governments restrict the use of fireworks in accordance with guidelines set by the Clean Air Act . The American Pyrotechnics Association provides a free online directory of state laws across the U.S. regulating the use of fireworks. Of course, fireworks displays are not limited to U.S. Independence Day celebrations. Fireworks use is increasing in popularity around the world, including in countries without strict air pollution standards. According to The Ecologist , millennium celebrations in 2000 caused environmental pollution worldwide, filling skies over populated areas with carcinogenic sulphur compounds and airborne arsenic. So, do fireworks create pollution? ~Some do. However, they follow the US Clean Air Act . The American Pyrotechnics Association has the guidelines for each state. However, some U.S. government scientists say Fourth of July fireworks displays often held over lakes and other bodies of water can pollute the water with perchlorate. Did you answer right?

We are limited in what we can purchase in my country, only licenced vendors are allowed to sell them, and only a week before we celebrate "Guy Fawkes" selling of fireworks after this date is fineable.

I think I'll just play with the fireflies ^^

i never really thought about it too much. i figure, if it makes me wheeze and cough, and i can't carry on a conversation, it's probably not a good idea. so, we don't really buy too many any more (celebrated last few 4th of july holidays with a very large meal instead).
although, i do enjoy blowing things up. xd

A few years ago, when I was at a friend's 4th of July party, a couple high schoolers were in the driveway setting off fireworks in their hand (yes, it's very dangerous) and throwing them. One of the fireworks rolled under a car. You can probably guess what I was thinking at the moment. So now, regardless of whether they harm the environment or not, I don't use fireworks.

I thnks it depends on the fireworks because is they are more powerful, they create more smoke. They do pollute though. For the 4th of '09,I was at the commumity pool with some peeps and i saw the wicks and packaging fall into the water and ground. But, the little fireworks like the ones you set off on the ground won't pollute if you dispose of them correctly(I think... :S )Thanks for making me ponder this :]

I don't really see the point in fireworks, at least not for personal use. Setting off your own fireworks seems kind of... lame if you ever get to see public displays. They're pretty dangerous, and people do a bunch of stupid crap with them. I'm not saying that if there weren't fireworks people wouldn't do stupid crap, but... y'know. I think they should just be used for community things. Otherwise it just seems kind of pointless.

I answered wrong, I said yes. gonk But, in that case, I think that people should only use the fireworks that don't cause pollution.
