I suggest just follow what the previous captain has done for the section, and improve in the areas you thought they did poorly. (That's what I did last year when I became captain.)

thanks. :3 but my problem is that the previous captain did a terrible job at motivating and getting people 2 do what they r sappost 2 do. sweatdrop

First: Congrats on the section leader position.

Just...try not to do what the previous one did if he/she was so bad.
Maybe offer rewards for kids doing what they're supposed to?
Works for my pit. Of course, in my case it sounds like: "Hey guys, if we run through the show -x amount of times-, we can do the next leg of the Pit Olympics!"

sweatdrop Just find something that works for your section to motivate them to do things.

Trust me, you'll get better as time goes on. And good luck to you!

Make sure that all the parts are covered and don't me lazy like my drum line capitan was.

our pit leader was great because she personally made sure that all the equipment was in its place, and when we went to do a show, she made sure that all the equipment that was needed was on its way down, and created nifty fast ways for the pit to get on and off the field during comp.

also I would try to make sure that everyone gets to play their instrument of choice for at least one song. when i was in pit, i wanted to play vibes, but the section leader took the part for every song and left me with cowbell and triangle. stare

There's one thing I'm mildly confused about though, alch.

Are you drumline captain or pit captain?

Cause I don't know what 'drum pit' means. xD

Lay down your rules and the band's rules. Help them learn their music and don't be pushy with everything. Don't slack off all the time and don't take crap from people. Learn Kung Fu
haha

One of the people that help the percussion is in the marines so when they disobey him he grabs their jugular vein
XD

he does it to me for fun, though stare

but it works

Oh, pit leader. Gotcha.

Hm...tell people it's a good way to practice before trying out for drumline.
Pit's actually a really good section, IMO. You learn how to play everything. And then when you go to drumline you already know how to read rhythms and stuff.

But that isn't really something to tell people. >>

Also: Smaller pits can be better. One year we had a one-man pit. It was hilarious, he had to play everything himself.
Now I'm in charge of a nine person pit, including myself. And it's total chaos. x_x
Be glad your section is small. lol.

Well, like I said, it depends on the people.
My section was rambunctious and didn't like to listen to superiors last year.
I only hope that the one causing the problem has grown up a little.

I don't know the people going into yours personally, so I can't say how yours will be. And it also depends on the section leader(s), too. If you're good at leading people, bigger sections'll be easier than if you're not good at handling a lot of people at once, like I was last year.

You'll just have to wait and see.
Last year was my first year, too. And it would have gone smoothly if not for that one guy who screwed everything up.

Just roll with the punches, try not to be too demanding. Remember, they're percussionists like us. And they're just like you with the exception that they probably don't want to practice as much as you do. >>;
...which is what I forgot last year. XD
