I'm fairly confident in my drawing style, and when I'm drawing for myself, I produce images that I'm proud of from time to time.
I have a frequent commissioner and good friend whom I appreciate dearly. When she asks me to draw for her, no matter what, I simply cannot get the commission looking how I want it to look.
Has anyone else ever experienced this? Maybe it works the other way around for you?
It's really aggravating, because I'd love to surprise her with giftart, but it never looks good and I usually end up giving up. XD

That's completely true!
I really like taking commissions, but I always end up hating how they turn out..but when I do art just for myself..it usually ends up the way I want it.
It might just be because when you are commissioned you're drawing for an audience..and i don't know about you..but I'm kinda reluctant to let people see my art most of the time..at least nonartists ^^;
Or...maybe it's that you have a lot more freedom when you're doing your own work. In any event, I definitely get what you're sayin'.

 the cow says:all the time and thats the thing with commissions...... some just don't motivate you enough..... art is something that always express a feeling on canvas or any type of medium if you ain't feeling something it'll show....

I can definitely attribute all of those things to this issue, Buu. xD
And yes, that's entirely true, !2ice.
I always experience that moment of holding breath before receiving commission details, because when you get a bad OC/whatever, it's like ''Arg kill me already DDD8" through the entire drawing process. XD

Ahh I get that sometimes :3 i stress about commissions a lot, so i do not do them very much at all. Though im rather picky with what i will and wont do for people, if they are going to give me something for my work i want it to be good so if im not feeling it i wont do it, its troublesome though D:

I know exactly how you feel.
I remember taking a comission from a friend of mine(ichasemonks) and I adored her and her OC and I wanted the picture to be the best I coud draw but it never turned out good enough in my opnion.
I redrew it countless times over the span of a year and a bit and I hated every drawing. Eventually I just called it quits because I knew it would never be as good as I wanted it to be and I didn't want to give her something inferior.
LOL @ Bad OCs. I totally know what you mean there to.
I'm a bit of an elitist so I let people know right away that I only draw what I want interests me and no amount of gold will change my mind. If it sucks there is no way in hell I'm going to draw it.

Yeah it's the same way for me. Y'know what though, it really helps to be picky. Take commissions that you know you'll enjoy doing or just browns request threads..I'll be doing a lot of that for now on ;}

I experience that all the time, I've been doing real money commissions for almost a year now. I wouldn't care if it was gold, but you don't mess with real money. I feel so lucky I even get to sell art at all, so I really try hard to make my art satisfactory no matter how uninspired I can feel with certain characters. I'm becoming more used to it now, but at first it really showed horribly when I didn't feel anything for a character. I'm able to deal with it better now. Avoiding characters you don't like is missing out on a lot of good practice and character building as an artist, making the effort of trying until you get it right really pays off in the end.

Oh yeeeah. I get what you mean. But I can't really say for sure about commissions since I've only done a couple. Haha. 8D;;;
But when drawing for others. . .man oh man, I just don't know what to do. Maybe it's 'cause it's the depiction of them/their character and I don't want to "ruin" it with my art. xD;;; Especially if they're good friends. D:
Kind of glad I stick to freebies. More liberty of what to do and you can deny all the avis/ocs you dislike. x)
HOWEVER. Yes, it's a lot easier to draw yourself since you know what you want to do with your image and you know what you want done to it. You know you won't go overboard 'cause it's "you" and blah~ xDD

  I can relate, I usually get this dead wall and then my mind goes blank. Really all it is, is just motivation, you have to want to do it in order for it to look good. Commissions are pressures, that's what I think unless you have someone who understands your RL daily necessities and is patient in waiting.

maybe before I went to artschool, but now, can't say that bothers me in my work. been educated to do as the client says, and you want to please the client as yourself and create a product that represents both of you. so I'm always happy with the outcome of my work, for myself or a customer. though the feeling it's inadequate comes after a few weeks. xD;
