So apparently now, if you use a song that's owned by the "Warner Music Group" and put in in a video and put that video on Youtube, Youtube has the right to disable the audio of your ENTIRE video. There is an option to attempt to report and resolve the issue, but Youtube can still say, "Nope, you don't own that song, no audio for you." gonk What the hell is the point of Youtube anymore? We can make videos but we can't use music? Or we can't use music owned by WMG? WTF? It's not like somebody's making any money by using a song in their Naruto AMV.

For more info watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hla7KMY8OFA&feature=channel_page

I didn't put this thread in "In depth discussion" because I want everyone to see this thread and voice their opinions.

WMG has a right to their music, and can enforce their legal jurisdiction when they want. Seems open and shut here to me. I don't see something legally or morally wrong here. They just want people to not use their stuff. It's just like Funimation could remove all the anime music videos that show their products, but they don't because they don't care. WMG does care so they are removing them.

True enough Saverio and the result is that Youtube is getting more and more pointless.
Personal videos can be stored on other places if you wanna show for friends specifically, people who make shows tend to have their own sites, etc etc.
But youtube is still useful just not so much for AMV's, Music or similar things

So by that logic, should Youtube videos be banned if they contain any reference or content whatsoever that pertains to any: Video game/movie/book (and so on)?

A girl had her video banned for singing a song herself. Does that mean that the only videos that should be allowed on Youtube are videos with no music/music composed and written by the user? Does that mean that you shouldn't be allowed to mention anything that you don't own legal rights to in a Youtube video?

Where does it stop? I just think there needs to be a fair middle ground. It's like Youtube is sending a mixed message. "Hey guys! Make creative and fun videos and share them with the world! Unless they contain music...or any ammount of content from a movie/tv series."

sweatdrop I agree with Shram that Youtube is getting more and more pointless. There are artists who have had the audio stripped off their Youtube pages, and they're pissed off because they WANT their content getting exposure on Youtube. There was no warning or anything, just suddenly "poof" no more audio for you!

This has been going on for quite a while. Pretty much all artists who are signed with Warner had their videos pulled months ago. (Amanda Palmer fans would be aware of this, because of how they screwed her over, and she has been far from silent about this. >.>; )

To be fair, if you're using music that isn't yours and you aren't paying royalties, I think they're well within their rights to yank the audio. sad It sucks, but them's the breaks.

Youtube's at Warner's mercy here. We're talking about one of those record companies that would happily sue the a** off of grandma for downloading a single song. They "own" the music, what the ******** is Youtube supposed to do about it? Greedy, greedy, greedy. =/

I was actually going to say at first that Warner has a right to do what they want and blah blah and all that's been said. And that IS true but the fact that the artists want their songs on Youtube and are instead being ignored says something. I think the artists realize there is potential here to get their songs heard by a larger fanbase and yet those protests are being ignored because Warner doesn't realize the possibilities.

Well this sucks, I use Youtube a lot for music that I can't find elsewhere (Mainly Crush 40 albums, I've checked Hastings repeatedly and can find nothing. -_-) Still, they have the legal rights. Though, just because someone CAN do something, that doesn't mean they SHOULD...

Well actually people can rip the sound from youtube videos (like I do) so while you may not make money the company could still lose it. People use youtube for other things, like Smosh I guess. Still it annoys me too... there's just no real argument I can make for them not to. sweatdrop

I can understand why they're doing it, but it still annoys me.

I'm one of the people who had the audio on one of my vids ripped off and it's annoying because it completely screws up the video- even more annoying to me is their dumb message "Feel free to use one of our approved songs!" Never mind the fact that, you know, it completely screws up the whole thing the creator was going for, picking the specific song and the clips to match- picking a 'NEW SONG!' isn't going to make things better. : /

I agree though, if they're going to keep quibbling about copyright and make your own original material, there's going to be no end to it.

You know what I want to know? What the real story behind that is. Anyone want to dig up that article the guy in the video mentioned and post a link here?

I'm also considering taking advantage of all of the contact info the guy posted. Yes, it was their decision to make, but as consumers it is our right to tell these companies how we feel about the way they run their businesses.

Referencing and making a parody a song are completely legal without consent from the owner. Using the song is completely different and, they have a right to stop people from using their products if they don't want them used that way. They own the song. It's not a difficult concept. More importantly they ******** gave you a list of things a list of "approved songs" and you still aren't happy.

This wouldn't be an issuse if it were the other way around, and that's why it's bullshit

Huh...that must be what Nigahiga was talking about when all of a sudden his "how to be gangster" and "how to be emo" videos were removed...they were bloody awesome too -_-

I am an old ATG member =]

The biggest issue I have with the Youtube removal of song and the war against Piratebay etc, etc, is that since filesharing has become so big and music videos were easy to get there has been a rise in the amouns of CD's, DVD's and Games sold.
They said to begin with that it would lower sales and destroy these branches but it seems to have done the opposite, the people running the different branches and laws seem to find this a bad thing.
I don't understand how earning money is a bad thing...
