Which is better, Rap or Metal?
PostPosted: Tue May 12, 2009 6:22 am

Well, the question is entirely subjective. Neither will appeal to everyone, and you'll always have people who love one more than the other. I don't think any medium of music is superior to another, even though I might not always be able to appreciate one.

That aside, between the two I really do like metal. Rap has never really appealed to me. I'm not really a HUGE fan of metal either, but there are some metal bands that I really like. I like metal that still has a rhythm and a sound that you can follow. I don't like just loud noise. I loooooove Maximum the Hormone. They're the Japanese metal band that did the opening theme for the second season of Deathnote. I love their energy and their music. Whenever I feel really sleepy Maximum the Hormone gives me a boost. Lots of people who aren't typically fans of metal like Maximum the Hormone. Check em out:

Many people have their own interests and favorites of music styles. Rap, Metal, Pop, Emo, Rock, Punk, etc. I think everyone likes a bit of everthing, if the music has great sound, beat, and lyrics to it. (Sometimes lyrics don't really matter to some people, they just like the beat or how the song sounds.)

I like a bit of everything. Rap I can stand, till a point. If it has endless of trash-talk and cussing, then it's just that, trash. It's not worth listening to. The same with Metal. I can stand it till a point. I at least would like to know what they're singing about (or is that screamo-heavy metal you can't understand?).

All in all, everyone has their interests and opinions in different music styles. There is no other one that is better than the other.

Each to their own, I suppose. Though, out of personal preference, I prefer Metal.

Hot funk, cool punk, even if it's old junk
It's still rock and roll to me
Next phase, new wave, dance craze, anyways
It's still rock and roll to me
Everybody's talkin' 'bout the new sound
Funny, but it's still rock and roll to me.

Err... How are you rating better? I enjoy both, but I like metal better. I don't think one is objectively better than the other -- i.e. rap and metal are equally valid forms for an artist to make concrete one's view of sense of life.

My likes in the metal genre generally flow into the metal sub-genres of Power, Symphonic, Folk, and combinations of these sub-genres. I enjoy the powerfully-high-energy of the music, the complexity of melodies and harmonies, and bows to mythological and folk influences that many metal bands love to use in their message.

When it comes to rap, I'm very picky. I don't enjoy mainstream rap. Much of the stuff that is mainstream is degrading to so many groups of people (including the rappers themselves) and, I feel, that they're selling their craft. But, alack, nowadays art is merely a commodity, a feast for the base and sensual, rather than a way to concretise and make-known an artist's view of life to someone who does not understand. But I digress.

The rap that I enjoy is the less common stuff: the stuff that tells the story, the stuff that tells of hardships, the stuff that is inherently local and personal to the rapper himself (scholarly him). Much of rap is, I feel, is tinged in an atmosphere of grunge, dirtiness, industrial, hardship; and the voice is the most portable way to express one's self. One might not consider it music; I don't know what I consider it. It's something I consider art, though, when it's not bought and sold like some product off the shelf.

If I must pick between only the two genres, it is metal that is my choice. I LOVE speed metal. I lately listen to a lot of Dream Evil, Demonslayer, and Dragonforce...and this one group that did a whole freakin' album based on Stephen King's Dark Tower series.

Do not make fun of my love of gaming inspired metal or I will come through your computer and slaughter you in epic ways. Epic, I say!

I listen to loads of Technical Death Metal band (Kalmah for example, Mastodon I GUESS is Tech.). But doom metal (Death, Lamb of God) and whatever the hell Cannibal Corpse are my favorites.

When it comes to rap, selection reaches a dead stop.

I think Run-DMC is rap... Right?

I'm not a fan of either only because today metal seems to be more about screaming than what it was like in the 80's. I don't mind 80's metal but I can't listen to it all the time.

I'm just not a fan of rap unless it's comical.

Billy Joel FTW!!!

You know who no one ever talks about? Nazareth! ******** awesome music has come from them!
