I'm coming up with an old west story and I'm trying to decide what occupation to give one of my characters
I was hoping you all cold help me decide

If you're writing a story about the old west, your character should have a job that completely submerses him/her in the lifestyle.
Something like a blacksmith or a sheriff. . . though it does depend on how cliche` you want it to be.
Out of the choices you gave, merchant is probably the best idea.
