Tyrell Taylor The Midnight Glare Oct. 24 ‘07 (written in my english class for a ‘short story’)
It was extremely foggy and I could barely find my way around. I was tricked by a group of my friends to go into a forest and stay in it for more than four hours. I had been in the forest for who knows how long, I had my watch taken away from me as apart of the bet. I did not like the cold damp air around me as I kept walking. Hands out in front of me as if I were blind, I stumbled around trees and roots. Eventually I had found myself in front of an old factory, it looked like it was abandoned because of the large lock that had been broken off and the door lay opened. I smiled, knowing that nothing in there could hurt me. I walked closer, my thoughts told me to look fiercer than I actually was; something my older brother had taught me, so I straightened my back and pushed my shoulders out. I grinned at the thought of what I looked like as I entered the door…
The night was a cold one and it seemed like it would only get colder. Then something happened, the air around me warmed up and I became confused. I didn’t know what to do, was there somebody in here? All I knew was that the warm air cooled had heated like billows of smoke passing me, each cloud of smoke warmed me, and I had to find its source. I slowly found myself trying to look around for a stair case, as if somebody where leading me there. I looked back before I continued, something was wrong. I stood in front of a large metal staircase. Soon enough I thought to myself ‘what if there is somebody here, a crazed killer.’ My thoughts were cut off by the sound of laughter; I tried to focus on the source but the buzzing of the laughter never stopped for breath. I felt like it where right inside my head like my brain was trying to scare me out of this dusty work place. My body tingled as if it where saying ‘It’s not right here, turn and leave’. My brain had a plan of its own; I took a heavy step up onto the metal stair, only to hear silence. I made a small sigh of relief as I looked up to see the stairs lead to darkness. Something was wrong, I turned to look up behind me to see a window, it was letting in pale blue light though, but it should light up whatever was at the top. I looked back up and thought to myself ‘smog?’ I slowly took another step and another until I found myself at the top. The darkness vanished and I looked at the light, it did not shine on me, something was blocking it.
I looked down the hallway, it was barren and the paint had peeled from it. My arms lifted to fold on top of my frozen chest as the heat had vanished. Then an eerie sound rang out, the sound of dripping, something has dripping. I tried my best to make with an answer that the question begged for ‘what was the dripping!?’ could it be blood?
My mind raced as I stood at the top of the stairs. I slowly walked towards the sound; my mind told me it was a stupid Idea, now my body and my brain had joined sides. I walked slowly as If I were walking on a bed of pins and needles, and did not want any of them to puncture my shoes. I felt the warm air slowly make its way to my body again. I smiled unknowingly. The dripping stopped as I came in front of a black door. It was sort of funny how all this had happened. My hand slowly went for the doorknob and I touched it, the warm metal invited me. As my cold and very numb hand twisted the doorknob, I stopped and I heard one last drip, before the door opened.
As the door slowly made its way to its resting place against the wall my eyes could not see what lay inside. The smog was there again, and I slowly stepped back, the laughter started up again, this time not in my mind. My heart raced as it tried to gain reason into my hands as they started to shake and clench into fists. My head swayed back and forth, soon my whole body did. I heard a ping of pain stab into my temples as I learched forwards, holding onto the doorway, I held myself up. The pain stopped and I looked at my feet, the smog slowly vanished from my feet and I gasped. My head looked up, and as I looked, a figure stood in front of me. He was clad in black baggy pants and a simple white button up shirt with blue hair. I finally met eyes with him, his blue crystal eyes covered in thin streams of blue hair quickly flickered crimson. My heart stopped and I wanted to collapse, but my knees kept me standing. As I was thinking of what to say to him he spoke first “why are you here its dangerous here” he said with soft words. Unfortunately whatever words he said never made it to my brain as I gasped “Who are you!?” my body regained stature as I stood in the doorway.
His smile was that of a cold blooded killer, but his eyes of a child. The man stepped forwards two steps and answered “My name is Mitchell” he said as he crouched down to look into my lowered gaze. His smile turned into that of a wicked grin, eyes turned crimson, but this time stayed. My body went into a defensive stance “look I don’t have any money, I’m not worth victimizing!” My voice was quivering and not very suggestive. It was then I thought I was a goner, but something very odd happened “Calm down, I won’t hurt you” he said as his eyes changed blue again. He stood up again and searched through his pockets and brought out a small handful of paper bills “here, leave” he said softly. I slowly made a smile, for a small scare I get some cash? Why not! My shaking hand reached out to his pale, slender hand and he handed me the money.
He gave me a looked that said to leave and I did just that, I turned and walked out. I knew soon enough, when I was out of range, I would run. I got to the top of the stairs, and looked around. This night and been looking up for me, and I was glad. Something about this still seemed wrong, but I brushed it aside as I descended down the stairs. I got about half way as I tripped and fell down the last few. Quickly my thin and light weight frame rolled down, making quite the racket. I managed to keep conscious as I slowly opened my eyes. I really hope that noise did not alert that weird man, I really didn’t want to see him again. Just as I sighed a breath of relief and slowly got up, a surge of pain shot through my head like a sword sliding straight into my head. Once again, my body wanted to collapse, but I held myself upright. Taking one heavy step I learched towards the gaping front door, it slammed shut. I cursed out loud this time as I thought that the wind closed the door but it was not the wind at all. A figure stood behind one of the doors and his medium blue length hair was visible. I moaned in pain and annoyance, I just wanted to go home! As my mind became more and more frustrated, the man stepped closer the one named Mitchell, and he grinned “had a fall did we, Bumped your head?” he asked. I instantly nodded just to speed this conversation up.
Suddenly the smog quickly released from Mitchell’s hand and wrapped around me, I could easily see through it, but he couldn’t. A snicker echoed “forgot my name?” he said again. I grinned “not in the least” then a long pause as I retorted in anger “you, What did you do! I used to know it!” I barked through the paralyzing miasma. I became more and more confused as things slowly released from my mental grip. Soon enough all I knew was my own name. Something had erased everything from me! My body was limp, and soon my vision was nothing but a black abyss. I felt two very cold hands embrace me, and tighten. I gasped as this grip winded me, then words slipped into my ear, as if somebody was talking to me from a far unreachable distance. The voice was soft and redundant to my fears and confusion, “I am the one that created you, and you respect me.” The words stuck to my thoughts and slowly wrote themselves to me. The feeling of a bite sunk into me, my neck burned with a harsh fury!

I awoke on the metal floor of the large workplace, but the air around me was not cold, it wasn’t warm either. My eyes slowly opened, and a loud ringing came to my hearing instantly. I shut my eyes again, when I was planning on just laying there until the ringing stopped, I heard a voice it was very familiar. Mitchell spoke slowly “Are you okay?” he asked worriedly as I opened my eyes to see him. This time, he was much clearer, and the ringing had stopped. I looked around; this room had no windows, just a desk and two chairs. The room was pained red with blue flowers around the floorboards. Mitchell spoke again “things are different than you may expect, I had changed you into something not human at all”. My attitude had not arisen to its usual insulting manner; instead I politely asked “what am I?” A chuckle raised from Mitchell “a vampire, a creature of the night”. Suddenly I became afraid of him and slowly tried to get up “what do you mean?” I asked as the answer punctured my lower lip, my extended canine had made its way through my lip and I yelped.
I looked up at Mitchell as if he would father me from my embarrassing problems. Instantly he understood and picked me up in a half hug. I smiled as I now stood in front of him and he said “soon you will be hungry, and you will eat what is proper, understand?” I knew nobody else in this strange world I had to make the best of the man Mitchell who had created me. I tried to look as if I was comfortable, but I wasn’t. My body throbbed with pain that was numbing at the same time. My lip bled and trickled down my chin, Mitchell didn’t seem to worry, and he leaned forwards and licked it off. His eyes met mine and I felt grossed out, but it was a fatherly thing to do, like when a mother cleans a baby’s chin with her finger and eats it.
He smiled “blood if our food, feed from it, or die.” He said simply, and I would act simply. He became stern, and the soft look faded from his eyes. He was mad? No, he spoke slowly “going into the sun will kill you, don’t do it. You will learn how to use your new strength soon.” My body was quivering at the moment as I looked down at my hands “what do you mean new strength? I always had this didn’t I?” Mitchell had underestimated me and forgot he had erased my memory. He changed subjects from his mistake and was about to speak when a shout echoed through the building. It was a name that was shouted “Hey! Chris! You ‘ere?!” the shout rang into my ears and I growled. Mitchell went wide-eyed, but calmed “your first lesson, How to turn humans into something better. He walked to the large heavy door and opened it quietly, making a hand signal to be quiet. He walked out into the dark hallway, and as he walked smog had surrounded his feet. I followed, being as quiet as the dead, and doing it quite well. Mitchell was gone, and I walked alone through the hallway. A voice entered my head ~against the wall, stay against the wall! ~ It beckoned, and I answered by pushing myself against the wall as I side stepped towards the shouting. Then the voice returned ~Its Mitchell, I want you not to question what I say and do as I tell you~ its commands sounded rather strange, but I did as he said. Soon enough I came to the end of the wall. The hallway had opened into a central room, connecting stairs to the hallway. I waited for the voice, but it did not come so I acted on my own. Standing on the stairs I looked around, quickly enough, spotting a figure in a blue coat and black torn jeans. I don’t know how I spotted those rips in the darkness, but I had no time to think. The figure spotted me and leaned forwards.
He spoke slow but loud, beckoning to me “Chris! There you are, let’s go!” As I was about to ask how he knew my name, the voice in my head came back ~act like you know him. You do know him~ I felt dizzy and then I called back “Colton?” I asked as I walked down the stairs, I knew this person. He was a friend; I met him when I arrived at his school.
I smiled as I walked down and asked “so are we going?” Colton looked around “you cheated coming here you know, you had to stay in the forest, not in here!” he laughed as he turned to leave. I wanted to leave, but remembered Mitchell and looked around, sure enough the voice came ~looks like your going home, ill be keeping in touch and giving you only what you need, as in terms of memories. Good luck. ~ I nodded to myself as I turned and walked out. I stopped once I was in front of the building and politely closed the door for Mitchell, as not to let a draft in. Colton began to complain “I hate this cold; I don’t know how you can walk around in a t-shirt and jeans like that!” I grinned “I’m just a cold loving type of person!” I said back to him. As we walked he looked up “when we go to the party, don’t think of her, okay? It makes us all sad.” My eyebrows knitted in confusion to what Colton had said. He looked at me and added to the sentence “I’m talking about Lynn, you two get along quite well, but it doesn’t mean her dad will like you for it.” Unfortunately I knew he was right, me and Lynn had a love that was very unique. Because of it we had to see each other, and we were going to meet at the party. I never liked drinking or smoking, but I liked going for the social activity. I meet a lot of new friends that way.
This time felt different, like I won’t know many people there. As I thought about what was going to happen we neared a dark and shady green building. Colton answered my question right away “the golf course!” he said as he walked down a small flight of stairs and opened the bright white door, a notice hung from it. I never bothered reading it as I walked in. The people where talking about me someplace within the run down building. I frowned as they stopped talking about me. We walked to the main room, shattered glass and spray paint decorated the pearl white walls. A small group of people sat in the middle, and another small group of people sat around a large wooden desk near a wall. Colton walked towards the group sitting at the desk. They brightened up and smiled as they saw us, Colton shouted abruptly “Emerson you dumb-a**, you forgot to get Chris!” Emerson, the native sitting behind the desk looked up “hey, whatever, you owe him the money” he said as he grabbed a red labeled bottle, most likely alcohol. I took a seat beside Emerson, and didn’t recognize the other two people.
Before I could meet them a boy ran into the room and he gasped before shouting “help! Some guys jumped us!” he said as he collapsed. I got up and with Colton we ran outside. I looked around to see three kids beating on two teens I recognized, it was Mathew and Lynn! Colton and I ran towards the three kids and pulled them off. One teen swung at me, I ducked long before he pulled his arm back. I retaliated with a switch punch to the gut, and the kid rolled away from the force of the punch. Colton wasn’t doing so good; being side-tracked by a large bottle of alcohol he grabbed it while being chased and drank it quickly. Quickly turning, Colton swung the bottle and smashed it over the teen chasing him. He laughed as the teen fell over screaming in pain. I was pulled back into reality when the teen I was fighting pulled back a fist and punched me directly in the face. I was not affected by the punch, and I lifted my leg to kick him in the chest, and when I did a deep crack sound lashed from his chest.
I gasped as I pulled my foot back and noticed the wounded teen already on the ground screaming in pain. In horrified shock I ran to Lynn, picked her up and dragged Colton behind me by the arm. I was clumsy at first but I got the hang of it. I opened the door to the broken down building and dragged Colton inside. I kept Lynn on my shoulder and I walked down stairs with her into a dark room. My senses adjusted and I could see perfectly for some reason, I never could before. I saw the walls painted green and the floor had torn pieces of carpet. By the time I saw the room as a whole, and the small hallway connecting to it. A noise of screaming and hollering echoed through the building “Colton you fought them all by yourself!?” then a raspy voice answered “hell yeah, all of them!” I shook my head and walked into a small room with her and set her down. She had been asleep for awhile and I sat in front of her, she had been bleeding, but I had not noticed it until now. My stomach growled at the sight of the blood trickling from her lower lip. I unwillingly kissed her just to taste it. I tasted just like blood, what was so great about it? As I thought about this taste, and the rest of my life Lynn woke up. Gasping slightly I looked at her, and she smiled “hey, what happened.” She asked as I sat in front of her “you got attacked, but we sort of saved you” I said smiling. Lynn brightened up, as If she had not been hurt at all “I’m glad you saved me” Eventually this small romantic moment would end when something stupid would happen, like always. None the less I tried to make the best of it, her smile faded as she spotted the pearl while fang jutting from my mouth. She squinted questionably at my smile, I stopped smiling and my mouth returned to its neutral state, closed. I was thinking of a reason for the fangs but she asked “those aren’t fake, are they” I shook my head; She gasped as she leaned in “whoa, so they are special dental work?” My worries faded “yeah, coasted a bundle, but it was worth it eh?” She smiled cheerfully as she pecked me on the cheek. My smile came back as I leaned back a bit in embarrassment, she grabbed the scruff of my shirt and pulled my forwards “don’t be such a baby!” she said as this time the kiss was on the lips. I wasn’t used to kissing her, we barely even dated. Her father hated me to death. As she was about to kiss me again a shadow loomed over us. Colton breathed heavily over us as he grinned “you two are having too much fun eh?” He said as he sat down. His drunken stare burrowed down on me “Kris is too much of a sissy too go that far with a gal like you Lynn, you know that.” He said as I knew about my frigidness. It was true that I didn’t want to bother making out with her, not in the state I was in right now.
Colton was about to put a hand on my shoulder when I heard a voice in my head. It spoke quickly ~Go back to the factory when the party is over, but don’t go in the morning you will regret it. ~ I leaned back to get up and Colton frowned “you are leaving already?” he asked I stood in front of them “I was thinking about it. I’m getting hungry and I need to eat.” He said as he put a hand on his stomach.
Lynn was upset as she looked up at me disapprovingly. I put my hand out “walk me out? I’m going your direction, I can walk you home some of the way.” She smiled and took my hand as I pulled her up, and we started towards the stairs. I heard Colton mutter “You suck Kris” I barked back “shut it”. Walking up the stairs I opened the door for Lynn and we walked onto the porch. I held her hand as we walked along the street. The night was dull, and so was the walk. She did not talk, she just leaned against me and looked up at me every once and awhile. I didn’t bother making chatter, it just made things worse. I walked to the forest edge and stopped. She sighed as I smiled like an idiot “ill see you tomorrow okay?” Lynn nodded and we spit apart. I walked into the forest, soon enough I started to sprint, then run. I didn’t feel winded like usual, instead I wanted to run for hours. Soon enough I got to the old factory. Quickly enough ending my enjoying run I walked to the large doors and opened one and slipped through. Thinking he could find Mitchell. Looking around I slowly made my way to the metal stairs, which I had become oh-so familiar with, I climbed them quickly. Trying not to disturb anything around me I made my way into the office of the building and looked around. Not seeing Mitchell I walked to the desk and sat on the dusted chair behind the desk.
Rocking slowly back and forth I looked at the things around me. Barren shelves sat halfway up on the wall on both sides of the squared room.

I read half, I will read the other half too. 3nodding
The way events happen...Kind of awkward. I don't favor first person stories much, so I can't give you a fair trial. I can't stand it because when it says, "I," it upsets me because it's putting me there. Why would I agree to a bet? I wouldn't do that. It's okay if you read it only to yourself or read it out loud to others. When someone else is reading, it can be difficult.
