So earlier Pandy was surfing around the net and she found this interesting conversation on DeviantArt. The following is a real life conversation the artist heard about.

Deviantart
American customer: “Your flag is just so pretty. I love maple leaves. Does it come in blue?”

Me: “Um, no, sorry, only red.”

American customer: “That’s a shame. My kitchen is blue, and it would look so pretty on the wall. You should make them in other colours.”

Me: “…”

Canadian customer behind her: “That’s a good point. I’ve always thought the stars-and-stripes would look great in earth tones.”

American customer: “Our flag is ALWAYS red, white and blue! Honestly, Canadians are so stupid sometimes.”

I nearly died laughing when Pandy read this to me. So what do you think about this stupid American? Have you ever heard any conversation that make you want to slap the person? And how does Pandy manage to find funnier stuff than me?

That doesn't really surprise me. As you guys are well aware, American's have a pretty bad rep when it comes to their intelligence levels. Despite the great USAicans that I have met on here, I really haven't seen enough evidence to suggest that the "dumb, rude, loud" American stereotype is false or even the minority. I'd love to be proven wrong. Please prove me wrong. Please.

I've had a fair few "stupid American" encounters online. I find the American belief that American's don't have accents pretty hilarious as well as sad. Not only does the USA have a variety of accents but they are also pretty noticeable. Yet I've seen far too many American's online posting about the "lack of an American accent". The line "you're lucky to have an accent" is particularly annoying. Everyone has an accent!

I've tried to tell that to people... the funniest thing is I've gotten this "we're Californian so we don't HAVE an accent" I literally sat there and stared at the person before walking away. I wasn't even going to bother to try and explain that EVERYONE has an accent.

Yeah, don't even bother explaining it to them, they'll just forget about it 2 minutes later.

Well I dunno. I remember bringing up with my German teacher, who also spoke a handful of other languages, and I'm fairly sure had traveled a bit of the world, if us around here in the Oregon area had any kind of distinct accent. And he answered that he never really noticed one.

One thing about accents is that... you have to be able to imitate them if they're going to be considered accents, there has to be so much about them that sets them apart from every other accent out there. I mean, I can put a British, Russian, Japanese, or Spanish twinge in my voice, I can imitate people from New York, Boston, Texas, the rest of the South, or a native-American, but I bet not even the best impressionist couldn't imitate a person from Oregon. We just don't have a very distinct way of speaking, and the same goes for most of the west coast.

Oregon's accent, I've been told, is the closest to "proper English" (the kind of sound you get, for example when people are singing), which is to say, the closest to lack of accent. *shrug* But there's no way you could consider, say, someone from Texas to sound like someone from Vermont, to sound like someone from Minnesota. Each has their individual "flavor", much the same as the Cockneys sound different than the Scots, sound different than the Irish, all of whom sound different than "proper British speaking". wink

Maybe the fact that that partiocular accent isn't distinct is what makes it distinct? rofl

I wonder what that same idiot would say to a Japanese person. Maybe: "If you are the land of the rising sun why isn't the circle yellow?" Which is ridiculous because the sun is far more red when rising than when it's high in the sky.

No but seriously who's ever heard of a blue maple leaf....... they are either green or red as a general rule, sometimes a little yellow. The person not only fails common sense, they fail basic natural science. They should be sent back to preschool/kindergarden to learn about leaves. rolleyes

:sigh:
I hate how much Americans rag on Canadians... They're such nice people, generally speaking.

Anyway, I once heard a girl tell my friend (who has a skin problem) that he looked gross and shouldn't work in customer service. To his face. I cried for him...

sweatdrop Wow...that's just...wow. Makes me think of something from Axis Powers Hetalia. lol Axis Powers is a manga where different countries are represented as people, who are rediculously exaggerated stereotypes.
http://community.livejournal.com/hetalia/355262.html

I think it's pretty funny because all the countries get teased xd

Pandy read Hetalia actually... she is absolutely addicted to it. I think it was looking for some fanart for Hetalia that she found this. I found the website this comes from too www.notalwaysright.com It's full of dumb customers and is absolutely HILARIOUS, I'm working my way through reading the whole site right now.

*Sniggers at first post* I bet it was a blond American valley girl type, or at least that is how I imagined it. Although I've got some redneck friends I could picture in the same scenario. Sure sounds ignorant who ever the American twit was.

As for American accents, I don't have a base accent...well, at least not one recognized as American. Mine is just "an accent" accent (as explained to me by an Englishman), but to date no one can place it. But I can fake New England and Southern if I am with others of the appropriate accent. And I once had a real Brit convinced I lived in England at some point of my life because I have a decent British accent.

Hm...I did have a So. Cali girl tell me she thought my accent was Californian because she couldn't place it, and at the time I'd never been to California. By the way, I've since learned that "Valley Girl" is accepted as a California accent to the rest of the world, as is "Surfer Dude". So would the "non American accent" belong to northern Cali, or is "Yuppie" the acceptable accent for that region?

And I like Canadians, they're generally pretty nice people. And the food there doesn't freak me out. That's a plus. And all the fun SciFi channel films seem to be filmed in Vancouver!

I like the Swiss too, for the same reason. I just don't want to live in a socialist country, because I like capitalism. Some does my family...and that pisses off my grandmother who is pushing for all of the family to become Swiss citizens. Apparently telling my grandmother that one thinks America is one of the most beautiful nations (we were discussing vistas and such), and not Switzerland, is like certain death as my uncle found out. Personally, I agree with my uncle. Because of the varieties of terrain, America has the upper hand over Switzerland. There are plenty of scenic places that are more interesting all over the world. Switzerland is nice, but not all that awe stopping unique in terms of scenery. My grandmother, who lives in Miami, just thinks Switzerland is perfect and the whole family needs to become Swiss just because that was where she was raised. She has dual citizenship, but I noticed she won't relinquish her American citizenship despite Switzerland being so perfect in her view. I find this interesting.
