It's a brilliant series by George R. R. Martin. The books published so far are: A Game of Thrones A Clash of Kings A Storm of Swords A Feast for Crows
I don't think A Dance with Dragons is out yet...

I read so much fantasy that it's difficult to impress me with magic. Well, Martin definitely impressed me! I was actually fightened for a moment, which almost never happens! In book 2 a sorceress rips off her clothes and is suddenly heavily pregnant when she hadn't been that morning. She gives birth to a shadow that grows larger after it comes out of her body. Then the shadow goes off to assassinate her victim. It was chillingly brilliant!
Martin is also extremely talented at writing battle scenes. I've never been in an intense physical confrontation, so when I read about wars it's difficult for me to relate. When I read these books, I feel like I'm there. It's amazing!
My favurite character in the series is Tyrion. He's a dwarf (Not like the race. I mean a short human.) with mistmatched eyes and bowed legs. He's not very well-liked and is commonly called The Imp. He's not physically strong, so he works on developing his mind, and - by God - is he witty! His sarcastic remarks make me laugh so much!
