What is a limerick?
Limericks are funny Irish poems with 5 lines, each one a certain number of syllables:
8 syllables
8 syllables
5 syllables
5 syllables
8 syllables
The lines that are 8 syllables rhyme with each other, and the lines that are 5 syllables rhyme with each other. Here’s an example (I don’t know the author):
There once was a man from Peru
Who dreamed he was eating his shoe.
He woke in the night
With a terrible fright
To find it was perfectly true.
You might notice in this one the pattern goes 8, 8, 5, 6, 8 instead of the standard 8, 8, 5, 5, 8. Poets sometimes take creative license.
The rules:
Write your own original limerick that is somehow related to Gaia. It could be about any one of Gaia’s games, items, shop owners, etcetera. If one line in your limerick has one syllable too many, or too few, that’s understandable, but having more than one incorrect line just makes you seem too lazy to think of more suitable words. Traditionally, limericks don’t have titles and are simply known by the first line, however, if you want to name your poem there’s nothing against it.
PM me your entries; don’t post them here. Why? Because when it comes time to vote, I’m going to label the contestants as “entry 1,” “entry 2,” and onwards, so the voters won’t know who wrote which submission. This way, there’s no risk of it being a popularity contest.
The submission deadline is Tuesday, the 10th of March. I won’t be accepting any entries PMed to me after that date. The voting will take place from the 11th – 16th of March. Elf on a Bookshelf will be sending the prizes out on the 16th so that the winners can have the option of wearing their prizes on the 17th, which is St. Patrick's Day.
EDIT: Unfortunately, I there weren't ANY entries by this date, hence the contest has been extended (entries accepted until the 21st and voting from the 22nd to 28th) so the winners will not have their prizes for the holiday itself, but at least they'll still have them.
The prizes (green for the holiday!):
1st place
– Verdant Jungle Voluptuous Wrap Dress
- an additional 15 points
2nd place
– Green Geisha Wig
- an additional 10 points
3rd place
– choice of the lunar or solar hairpin
- an additional 5 points
Okay, third prize isn’t green, but they still match green items nicely! whee Yes, these prizes are "girly," but at this time all except two of the elves at The Bookcase are female, and the boys rarely post.
The twist:
Elf on a Bookshelf, our beloved guild mule, is going to submit one entry, too. Her limerick cannot win. For example, if she wins third place in the poll vote, then I’ll simply give third prize to fourth place winner. Why am I bothering to do this? So I have an excuse to give out more points, of course! exclaim After I post all of the submissions (entry 1, 2, etcetera) anyone in the guild – whether they entered the contest or not - can post in this thread to guess which entry they believe is Elf’s.
You’ll lose1 point for guessing incorrectly and gain 5 points for guessing correctly. One person is allowed to guess multiple times, however, once a single elf figures it out obviously no one else can speculate.
A Tie:
In the event of a tie within the poll vote, I’ll determine the winner. For example, if there’s a tie for second place, then I’ll select which of them wins that prize, and the losing second-place winner will be awarded the third prize. Because, technically, the losing second-place winner still has more votes than whoever got third in the poll. Does that make sense? PM me if you’re confused and I’ll try to explain It better.
