I'm having trouble figuring out which Death Whisper I need. Tektek says the one with the Soulless Sleep (purple eyelids) is Gen 7. But when I preview the items on the marketplace, it doesn't show it.

tektek isn't always up to date on everything.
Check the different generations in the marketplace to find the pose you want.

One more question though:
Can an evolving item evolve when you're equipped with it, or will it only change when you're not using it?

It will still evolve if you have it equipped 3nodding If you have a pose equipped that the item has evolved past, you can keep wearing it unless you take it off/equip another pose of the item.
