“If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures
from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise
with their fellow men.”

-St Francis of Assisi

The St Francis Academy has never had the approval of any government board, international or otherwise, nor has it ever needed said approval.

This exclusive boarding school, after all, is financed not by government grants, but by the fortunes of some of the oldest and wealthiest families in the world.

Older, even, than humanity itself.

St Francis plays host to the Inhumans, Demihumans, Metahumans, and simply not humans. Here, the children of a half-dozen races come to learn and work together, working towards the presentation of a unified, respectable front of non-human entities.

Why must they present such a front?

On December 23rd, 2012, the human world was shattered irreparably. It was not a nuclear war, or the apocalypse. It was a complete social fallout, brought on by one, horrible accident.

They found out.

A terrorist strike resulted in the revelation of an underground complex, hosting a large coven of vampires. And with the vampires discovered, it was only a matter of time until the other races followed.

Now, nearly a century later, by sheer force of numbers, humans have delegated the Otherfolk, as they are called, to second class status, at best. Housing, education, everything. The only creatures able to maintain their previous lifestyle were those wealthy enough to buy freedom, or those humanoid enough to pass for 'normal'.

Eventually, the Otherfolk grew sick of their treatment, and ten years ago, a war broke out. The Otherfolk were soundly defeated, but underground terrorist organizations still exist.

St Francis and her sister schools were founded to give the right to an education to all Otherfolk, in hopes that such a catastrophe would never again occur.

It's location is highly guarded, and whether or not this prevention is meant as 'preventing war' or 'preventing defeat' is currently unknown.

Lifespan: Effective immortality. They do not die of age or illness, only injury.

Fae [Fey, Fairy, Faerie, etc] is a title covering a large variety of so-called mythical creatures. Their appearances vary, but all humanoid ones are of near-human height. Non-humanoids tended to be intellectually stunted or, in fact, non-sentient.

Fae include, in physical appearance, creatures ranging from Pixie-like, to Elf-like, to Angel and Demon-like.

All Fey are rendered powerless, and often are extremely ill, during certain celestial events. These are dependent upon their type, though all Fae are sickened by the two Equinoxes.

There are two court types of Fey, with the remainder being 'solitary'.

* Seleigh / Seelie Court: "Seelie" is Old Saxon for "blessed."
It comes as no surprise that fey of the Seelie court are considered good, and use their glamor to bless others. Think of them as the "fairy godmother" type. Typically they are fair of both hair and eyes, and seem to "glimmer" when seen from the peripheral. Just like any other creature, they have their own kind of temper. But Seelie fey will not punish without reason. Unfortunately, to every good thing there is a bad side, and faeries of the Seelie court tend to be extremely proud. This is because Seelie Fey are virtually entirely pure of blood. Seelie fey are sickened by the Winter Solstice, as well as the approach and occurrence of total or partial Solar Eclipses.

* Unseleighe / Unseelie Court: "Unblessed" seems a little unkind, but it's honest. Fey of the Unseelie court have a tendency to use their glamor to trick and seduce others, even syphoning off and "feeding" from the emotions caused by their meddling. Dark of both hair and eye, they usually seem to be floating in a mist, if seen from the peripheral. However, they are also extremely seductive, and get attention even when they don't necessarily mean to. This is probably why their blood is more than a little unclean. Unseelie are sickened by the Summer Solstice, as well as the approach and occurrence of total Lunar Eclipses.

* Solitary: Solitary Fae have no allegiance to either court. Most are born Solitary, as breaking a court allegiance is a complex and nearly impossible task for most. Those who achieve it are often called Rogue, rather than Solitary. With the murder of the Unseleighe Queen, though, an unusually high number of Unseelie courtiers have been trying to break their newly weakened fealty. In appearance, they vary widely, and the least human looking of the sentient Fae tend to belong to this group, such as the green skinned sprites. Solitary fae tend to become ill at any of the Sabbats (Solstices, Equinoxes, Beltane, Lammas, Imbolc, Samhain), but no celestial events affect them.

Common abilities of the Fey include [though are not limited to]

* Visions: Dreams and visions are common for the fey. They can sometimes see what will happen, though their dreams are often symbolic, and require study to decipher. Unseelie fae have the clearest and most frequent visions.

* Enhanced Healing: As with most other supernatural creatures, the fey heal incredibly fast. Seelie fae have the fastest healing skills.

* Glamor: The magic of the fey is called "glamor." This is because most of what they do is illusion. They can change the appearances of things to make them seem more beautiful, or more frightening, with a simple suggestion. Even those who can shrug off the mind powers of a vampire might find themselves ensnared by a fey's persuasion. Solitary fae have the most advanced glamor skills.

* Harmony with Nature: Trees, vines, thorns, etc. seem to mysterious move out of a Fey's way if they are traveling through the woods.

* Bless: (Seelie only) Seelie fey can bless others, to make them more lucky, or stronger, for a short amount of time. Please note that using blessings on others is strictly forbidden during exam times and sport events!

* Curse: (Unseelie only) The polar opposite of bless, Unseelie fey lay curses. While not necessarily bad intentioned, a curse can generally only be removed by it's caster or someone of a higher rank than them. Curses may be neutral, but are never beneficial, and can be used to cause harm, pain, or even death, when used by stronger Fae.

* Snare: (Solitary only) With no alliance to light or dark, many of the abilities of Solitary Faeries are less than that of their court bound peers. However, they excel in a type of glamor involving actually disguising a person's thoughts from themselves. They can make someone believe anything, not just about the world around them, but about their own bodies and minds. Generally used for seduction, and in darker cases forced ritual suicide. As with other glamor, Mages are immune, though even Master Lycans and Vampires are susceptible to lies told in this manner.

Lifespan: 300-350 Years, with an additional 50 should they chose to spend them only in animal form.

Lycanthropes appear human for most of their lives, as a general rule. Though they are able to voluntarily change their forms at any time during the moon cycle, this change is forced upon them from the night before the full moon to the night after.

The change in form generally lasts between four and eight hours, with longer changes going to younger students. During this change, Lycans have an increased need to eat, and sometimes lose control of their instincts, changing from sentient to animal. During a voluntary change, a well controlled Lycan may be able to prematurely return to a human form, but this forced change tends to result in spending the next day or two passed out from exhaustion.

Lycans who spend more time in animal form than human may retain some animalistic physical traits, such as fangs or pointed ears.

Compared to humans, even in human form, Lycans eat an absurd amount of food. It is not uncommon for them to devour a day or two's worth of food for a human in a single meal.

There are three types of Lycanthrope

* Pack: Pack lycanthropes are canine, most often Wolf. They stand at the very top of lycanthropic "royalty" as the most wellknown and (debatably) feared type of shapeshifter. They are ruled by one alpha male and one alpha female in each and every city. In a school setting, this type of leadership will most likely fall into effect as well. But be aware that those who seek dominance will need to fight in order to achieve a higher rank.

* Pard/Pride: Leopards, Panthers, Tigers, Lions, Lynxes. These are the feline lycanthropes. Mostly sticking to themselves, they are a tightly knit group, protecting their own with a viciousness almost unparalleled by any other race. They tend to resent the absolute rule the wolves try to achieve over the other lycanthropes, but have, as yet, done nothing about it.

* Underground: Members of the underground are usually those gifted with the less...pleasant...forms of lycanthropy. Were-rats. Weremoles. True to the name of their group, they are the outsiders, and are often underestimated by the other types of lycanthrope, although they possess equal strength.

Common Lycan abilities include [but are not limited to]:

* Truth: Never lie to a lycanthrope. Even in human form, they can scent whether someone is lying, or whether they are afraid.

* Enhanced Senses: Lycanthropes can see/smell/hear/feel on a higher level than humans. Their sense of smell is even better than that of a vampire.

* Enhanced Healing: Injuries that would kill a human being heal with relative ease for a lycanthrope, as long as the brain, heart, and spinal cord remain intact.

* Strength/Endurance/Speed: Lycanthropes posses a feral strength and agility, and are virtually unparallleled in close-quarters combat.

* Shifting: Lycanthropes can, even in human form, shift their bone structures so as to make their faces look differently. Similarly, they can manifest claws and fangs even while retaining human form.

Lifespan: 300-350 Years, after which they must feed daily to stay alive

Vampires tend to be more pale than humans. It comes from being dead. Older vampires almost never show their fangs, but younger ones can't seem to help it. The older the vampire, the more still, quiet, and dead they appear. Vampires can range from seductive to terrifying. They just seem to exude it.

Otherwise, these blood feeders are roughly how humans had always envisioned them.

There are three types of Vampire

* "Pureblood": Pureblood vampires are born, and often have a more feral appearance (sharper teeth in general, not just their fangs, and glasslike fingernails), likely from inbreeding. They come from old families with old money, and usually sport European surnames. They age very slowly, so that a Pureblood Vampire attending St Francis may be one hundred years old, while still looking as if they were a teenager. Unlike the other two breeds of vampire, Purebloods have NEVER been human, and thus can breed, whereas the other two cannot.

* Shared Blood: These vampires are made by a vampire draining the victim to the point of death and then allowing them to feed on the one making them. It is viewed in the same light as if a vampire chose to adopt a human being into their family. These vampires have close ties to the ones who made them, and share a mind link because of the closeness of their blood. They will remain forever the way they were when then died, down to the length of their hair and fingernails. Because their genes of mostly human, a Mage or Witch may be converted using this method.

* "New Blood": These vampires are made by the same vampire biting the victim three times within one month without those bites being purified, and are viewed in the vampire community almost as taboo b*****d children, because they can be made by mistake. Though they will never age, they can cut their hair, and even dye it, because they are very close to simply being a corpse. On the other hand, they become progressively paler as they age, and even young ones can find it hard to pass for human. Mages and Witches cannot be converted by this method, because of their natural abilities for healing.

Vampiric abilities tend to include [But are not limited to]:

* Thrall: Using their eyes, vampires can hypnotise others, usually humans. Often used to seduce people into letting them feed, or to cloud a person's mind so that they do not see them moving.

* Enhanced Senses: Vampires can see/smell/hear/feel on a higher level than humans. Their sense of smell is not as good as a lycanthrope's.

* Truth: (Master only ability) Master vampires can tell when they are being lied to. The best advice? Don't lie to them.

* Mindwalking: (Master only ability) Master vampires can walk in the dreams of others. If this person is the vampire's human servant, or a pomme de sang with a strong enough tie to the master, the vampire will be able to communicate through mind link even in daylight hours, although doing so would leave the servant/pomme extremely distracted.

* Enhanced Healing: Injuries that would kill a human being heal with relative ease for a vampire, as long as the brain, heart, and spinal cord remain intact.

* Strength/Endurance/Speed: Even a newborn vampire can lift a Toyota. One handed. They aren't hurt very easily, and can move extremely quickly, though not as fast as a Lycan.

* Calling: Vampires can call a creature to aid them in times of need. Rats, Cats, Spiders, Wolves, etc. Supposing that the vampire is strong enough, and the animal corresponds, they can even command lycanthropes.

* Levitation: This ability gives vampires a little extra speed and grace. Those particularly gifted with it can sometimes appear to "fly."

Lifespan: 200-250 years

Virtually human in every way, witches are a genetic mutation that sprung up in a few old Irish families. Members of particularly old families may have red hair, green eyes, or the scar where a sixth finger has been removed from the hand. All witches are of Irish descent in some way.

There are three types of Witch

* Necromancer: Necromancers have a strong affinity with the dead. They are the most likely to be mediums, communicating with the ghosts of those already passed. However, they are also able to raise zombies and skeletons to do their bidding. They do this by sacrificing another life (usually a chicken or goat), however, young Necromantic witches have been known to raise small animals from the dead (insects, birds, reptiles) without needing a sacrifice.

* Waerloga: The word that came from this Old English term--the modern "Warlock"--is often used to denote a male witch. However, the implications are in the linguistics. "Waerloga" has been loosely translated to mean "oathbreaker", but the witches who fall under this unisex label are actually just the untrained members of the race. They are largely looked down on as untalented, because they have not been raised in the Old Way. As such, they are the most likely to break the Rede out of sheer ignorance, and the most likely to use their abilities offensively.

* Elementalist: As the name implies, Elementalists are strongly in tune with nature, and through it, an element that reflects their personality. It is rare for any witch to be adept in more than one element, although most choose a "major" and a "minor" element to direct their energy into. These witches are usually raised with the Old Religion by family members, which makes it easier for them to accept their powers. It has been hypothesized that many regular human beings may have the same type of power, but an inability to recognize it.

Common Witchly abilities include [but are not limited to]:

* Touch Telepathy: When a witch is touching you, they will be able to sense your surface thoughts very easily. Though they cannot reach in an rifle through your mind to find exact what they want, it's best not to think anything offensive while one is touching you.

* Psychometry: The ability to learn certain details about a person by touching an object that is near and dear to them. This includes ONLY past information. Psychometry can NOT be used to learn present information, or read thoughts. The more important the object is to the person, the more the witch will learn. For example, they would learn far more from a treasured locket, worn every day, than they would from a pencil dropped in science class.

* Evocation: The expelling of power in a burst by channeling it through the hands (as with elemental magic). This kind of magic can only be used in the line of the witch's sight.

* Invocation: The casting of a spell on a person or object. To do this, one must have either hair/blood from the person, or know their true name (full name, in the exact inflection which that person uses when they say it themselves), plus various spell ingredients.

* Summoning: Witches can call a spirit animal to aid them. Their magical strength, their confidence, and their faith in the creature all affect how strong and how tangible the creature is, as well as how easily they can keep it under control.

* The Rede: All witches must know that what they put out into the world will come back to them by three. Sort of a more tangible version of the Golden Rule. Thus, witches can often be found charming people for luck or riches. As a result, they tend to be lucky and wealthy. Of course, Waerloga often accidentally cause themselves more harm than help.

Lifespan: 200-250 Years

Mages are extremely similar to witches, in that once upon a time, they were genetic humans. The Mages 'evolved' around three thousand years ago in what is currently Iraq. All Mages and their children, be they Mage or not, have a second thumb. The oldest Mage families practice the removal of this digit, and it is the sign that one's genes have the potential to result in Mage abilities in yourself or your children.

Mages with manifested abilities tend to have dark skin and eyes, though their hair color varies widely. This is because when a Mage's powers reveal themselves, usually around age five or age twelve, their skin and eyes darken, while their hair remains untouched.

There are three types of Mage:

* BattleMage: BattleMages have offensive abilities based around the manipulation of the auras of themselves and those around them. Particularly experienced ones can even freeze another person's physical form by halting the motions of their auras. Most commonly, they form Aura weapons, ranging from sword and daggers to guns and bows, to simple blasts of aural power. In conversation, they are commonly called Gunners or Red Mages. BattleMages are from the oldest families, and considered to have the highest rank, though there are few situations, even culturally, where the actual rank of a mage matters.

* BlessMage: BlessMages, or BlessedMages, have the ability heal another's or their own injuries near instantly, even under circumstances that should have killed, such as decapitation or severing of the spine. However, their skills are less effective as more time passes, and lethal injuries must be dealt with immediately for any effect to be had. Experienced BlessMages are able to heal multiple people from lethal injuries with little of their strength being sapped by simply forcing an injury to reverse, but younger BlessMages usually have to summon the power to actually heal, a process which drains themselves and the patient. Commonly, BlesssedMages are called Healers or Blue Mages.

* TechMage: TechMages, or TechnoMages, are a very recent evolution in Mage history. Small numbers of Blue and Red mages found themselves unable to manifest their powers, even after their darkening. These children had an immense affinity for machinery and technology; some even spoke coding and machine languages. They could perform miracles of technology, and repair any mechanical mishaps with ease. Without formal training, however, most never raised their skills to super-human. In recent decades, this training has become available, and with as little as a glance, a master TechMage may be able to turn a pile of smoking rubble into a perfect, working machine, or be able to interface with a network and collect data without the intervention of a computer or similar device. Commonly, TechnoMages are referred to as Techies or Yellow Mages.

Abilities common to Mages include:

* Aura Sight: Mages can view the auras of all Otherfolk, and any human or machine for which they have an Affinity. This means that in addition to Otherfolk, BattleMages can view the aura of an opponent, BlessMages can view that of a patient, and TechnoMages can view that of a machine.

* True Sight: Because of their vision of Auras, Mages cannot be fooled by illusions/Glamors or captured by Thralls. However, they can easily be lied to or tricked in other ways.

* Intuition: With training, Mages can use their vision of Auras to make accurate predictions of the future, where certain persons or group are involved. Without training, this ability manifests as a strong sense of intuition.

* Manipulate: Beginning with their own Auras and advancing to others, Mages learn to manipulate life energies to halt, control or reverse actions.

* Freeze (Masters only): A master Mage may be able to halt all activities of a small group of persons or machines for an extended period of time. If alive, the frozen's heart will cease beating, their mind will cease reacting, and their aura will be eerily still.

Lifespan: 300-350 Years

Gnomes are not what you would expect from the common connotations of their racial name. Their name is based on the two latin meanings for Gnomus, Earth (or Gaea) and Intelligence.

The reference to Intelligence shows that the Romans were fully aware of the existence of this race, and their sentience. A fact that Gnomes readily acknowledge.

The reference to Gaea could have two meanings, and the Gnomes themselves are unsure of what it is. It could refer to their stature, for although they have human proportions they are never taller that four feet, or it could refer to their lack of males.

Only Gnommish females are sentient, humanoid, and capable of reproduction.

Gnommish sons are feral looking creatures, lazy, four legged and covered in a soft coat of fun, they resemble rabbits in body, and cats in facial structure. Often, their mothers or sisters keep them as pets.

Gnomes separate themselves by their habitat of origin, although all Gnomes are equally comfortable living above and on land. Like Mages, they have no set cultural ranking by family. However, individuals may the treated more positively or negatively depending on their skills in the arts and logic, the two defining features of Gnommish society.

There are three types:

* Dryad: Dryad gnomes have lived above ground for as long as they can remember. They most resemble humans structurally, and are the second tallest. They tend to appear Mediterranean in origin, and their original homeland was on the Italian peninsula, but they most often live in low population forest areas now, meaning very few are still from Italy. They are the oldest family.

* Mason: Mason gnomes are the closest to what humans think of when they hear Gnome. They have resided underground for centuries, and have become much shorter than the other two families, usually no taller than about three feet. Their skin is always very fair, and they often have lightly colored eyes. They are the middle family.

* Nymph: Nymph gnomes are the youngest family of gnomes, having once separated from Mason gnomes. Originally, they lived amphibious lives in underground reservoirs. In recent centuries, they have moved above ground, and reside near lakes or rivers. Salt water actually results in skin burns to River gnomes. They have fair hair, webbed appendages (although these are sometimes surgically modified to be 'normal') and can hold their breath for as long as fifty minutes, but are unable to actually breath water. They are the tallest of the gnomes, and their proportions often seem a bit stretched.

Gnommish abilities include:

* Persuasion: Gnomes are known for fast tongues and faster thoughts. In a verbal argument, they tend to win because they can speak logical circles around others. They have a talent for persuading people to see form their point of view, and one of the traditional games of Gnomes is to make people agree to two or three conflicting points of view in a matter of a few minutes. Call them Otherfolk Politicians.

* Tongues: Gnomes are able to learn other languages with ease. With as little as a single exposure to an average conversation, they can be effectively fluent. Gnomes also tend to enjoy creating their own 'secret' languages.

* Evolution: Adapting to new climates is a special skill of Gnomes. In as little as two generations, they can evolve such absurd differences as going from underground dwellers to water dwellers. Similarly, an individual Gnome may change her genetic structure in dozens of small ways, to evolve their own forms in their own lifetimes. They can usually perform seven evolutions in a year, though they tend to be small, with larger changes requiring multiple evolutions.

* Innocence: Due to their stature and their single-sex population, Gnomes have the appearance of being exceptionally naive, harmless and young. This, they often use to their advantage.

* Creation: Similar in some aspects to Summoning, Gnomes are trained in Creation. Through a medium, such as song, painting or writing, a Gnome can literally create a weapon or ally or material from nowhere. However, these creations can only do what they are told to do by he creator, meaning they do not understand implications or assumptions. The creations will cease to exist when their medium of creation is destroyed or (in the case of music) halted.

* Blood memory: Masters only. Throughout their history, masters of one of the crafts of Gnommish society, those being evolution, creation and tongues, were known to bind their knowledge into their genetic code. Through accidental or intentional use of evolution, their descendants can unlock their predecessors' skills. [Limit one per customer: Evolution, increases limit to between twice monthly and once weekly. Creation, creations are capable of reactive thought and basic decision making, able to understand implications, etc. Tongues, along with the sensation of tasting words, there will be an instinctive knowledge of things such as lying, omission, and what words will have the best effect; with practice, may learn the hidden language of the body, giving telepathic-like reading abilities.]

{{Short post}}

Horatio had already sent out the emails to cancel her morning classes, certain that her students were probably busy being eternally grateful for having such a blow off of a teacher for their first class or two of the day.

The rain had worried her for a moment, but only for one. She knew her machinery was all completely waterproof anyway, what good would it be if they weren't?

And so, the blonde TechnoMage settled into her chair for a long morning shift of interminably tinkering with things that would have bored any normal person to insanity.

Just A Fly On The Wall

The rain tapped on the four windows that looked in to her class from the school grounds on the first floor. The sun slowly piercing through the opened window blinds. Hunched over in the padded rolling chair, a dainty hand moved the fork towards the rather thin lips to bring the gift of a piece of morning sausage, chewing a bit and enjoying the meat with a spicy taste. Kiala was multitasking as the other hand twirled the mouse wheel of her computer to scroll through the e-mails that the teachers sent. That was until her fork settled down on to the paper plate that rested on her biology desk. “Hm.” The woman hummed as she clicked to open the mail. A light smile came upon her face. It was clear that Horatio must be doing another of her experiments. Unlike her fellow teacher, the only reason Kiala was allowed to cancel classes were on those certain days that she must take off.

Just because, in this school, Kiala’s kind was a norm didn’t mean that she liked to pronounce it to the rest of the school body. Shaking her head lightly causing the platinum blonde hair to shake in it’s rather low pony tail; her bangs tickling the woman’s pale forehead. Moving the mouse’s pointer to the back button exited from the letter only to continue down the list. Her other hand moving back to the fork to finish her breakfast before class was to start. Oh, her students were going to love her today. Kiala didn’t care if it was the first day of class, she felt no sympathy to the students as they will receive an assignment today.

Evelyn let out what sound like a faint meow as she stretched. It was the start of classes today. She’d went back to sleep after seeing the email that said morning classes weren’t going to happen. But then to her dismay she realized that wasn’t for her class, so sadly her prolonged sleep was cut short. Dancing over to her closet Evie picked out a small purple dress. Perfect for the first day of classes.

Wiggling into the dress Evie growled some as she guided her tail through the small hole in the dress. She did not regret spending so much time in her animal form, it saved everyone so much trouble, but the traits passed from her animal form to her human one could be very bothersome sometimes. As if being separate things and knowing they were being talked about her ears gave a slight twitch. Grinning Evie wasted no time in skipping out of her room and down the hallway.

She hoped that she was not going to be late to Ms. Kay’s class. Heck, she was even going to skip eating to get there on time. Well, she stopped and looked around then seeing the coast was clear Evie pulled out what looked like a sucker from the confines of the ruffles in her dress; She was going to eat something. A sucker was not an adequate meal though, and she knew she’d hear about it if she was found out that she hadn’t actually eaten anything else, but that was a risk she would take. Taking off the wrapper and sticking the candy in her mouth in what seemed to be one swift motion Evie began to skip down the hall once more.
