Mmkay, I'm sure most of you who have been in guard for a while have picked up on a few of the dos and don'ts of guard. And there are sometimes things to be discovered which the directors don't officially tell you but are actually very helpful.

For me, the thing that saved my life on numerous occasions was this: if you put a few extra strips of guard tape on your flag, it can come in very handy for repairing things like silks coming off or broken rifle straps when you can't get at a roll of electrical tape (like during warm up before a tournament).

Soo...

Buy your own guard tape instead of mooching off the older girls, and use too much as opposed to too little. If the tape comes off, use new tape! Don't try to make the old tape try to stick because it will just come off again.

Don't take other people's equipment.

Check your own chart before you accuse someone else of being in the wrong place. (this would be during practice of course)

And if you know you're in the right spot/doing the right thing, stand up for yourself. Nothing worse than a girl who thinks she knows everything making other people do the wrong thing because they listen to her when they should know better.

This is for shows before you get your official uniforms(or for uniforms in some cases) if your pants feel a little bit to big they -will- fall down during the show if you don't pin them tighter.

YOU CANNOT HAVE ENOUGH SAFETY PINS, or bobby pins, or tape. things are always always always going to fall apart at the last second or someone is going to forget something critical.

Doing something neat the first time saves time going back and doing it later(taping flags, weapons, etc) or having it come apart in the middle of a show.

DON'T SHARE MAKEUP. sharing pinkeye in the eyeshadow = not fun.

If you're spraying hairspray on your face (to hold the makeup longer or to add glitter or what not) do not open your eyes until it is COMPLETELY dry. it will sting and burn.

Just the way our band show is setup. Our Band director has percussion right next to guard. And me playing bass drum, and the majority of people in guard are freshman,

NEVER STAND NEXT TO A FRESHMAN IN GUARD WHEN THEY ARE PRACTICING!

I got hit in the crotch. I fell over in pain almost cried cause of how painful it was. It was a rifle.

Always bring your jazz shoes. If you can, buy more than one pair. Nothing worse than running an entire show in shoes that are 3 sizes to small. sweatdrop (And no I was not the one who forgot her shoes. I was just kind enough to wear the smaller ones.)

Right before a performance it pays to have restless feet. Helps them warm up in the cold weather or not the instructor likes it.

Finish your make-up and costume BEFORE helping anyone else.

Report any and ALL wardrobe malfunctions BEFORE you step onto the field! stressed

When in doubt, DON'T. (for practices)

Remember, the band members are more afraid of you than you are of them. BUT, it cost more to repair if something of THEIRS gets damaged.

When passing equipment to each other during set up DO NOT aim for the damn knees!

If there is a formation problem (like crossing through flute players stressed ) the time to mention it is NOT 5 mins before the performance.

At practice your drama stays at the door!

NEVER REUSE TAPE!!!
JUST DON'T
(it gets really gross and sticky!!) xp

oh, and don't use velcro either!
it doesn't stick to swingflags
(my guard used 2 last year and we needed a way 2 keep them together, so we used velcro... bad idea. they came apart all the time. we even tried taping the velcro on)
lol it sucked! xd

sorry to contradict a few people but...

TAPE CAN BE REUSED.
SAVE IT. ITS PRECIOUS!

only a few times tho...
it wont kill you.
^_^

its what i tell my girls.

and

THE CAPTAIN IS [almost] ALWAYS RIGHT!!

i don't believe in reusing tape. I think the adhesive is lost after being put on once and out in the elements. better to just have a roll of tape in your bag. have a small first aide kit and sewing kit in a guard bag for safety as well
PostPosted: Fri Sep 26, 2008 2:29 pm

I agree with reusing tape. My guard has been a little short on money in the past so we had to use our tape carefully and sparingly. In most cases I would say reuse it, but if it's been on so long that the adhesive's turned black and it comes off oddly shaped then it obviously should be trashed.

Perform during practices. It will feel second nature to you by the time a show comes around and will give you another thing to focus on if you're nervous.

Toss into the wind you'll look pretty stupid if you keep running and diving for you're equipment every time it leaves your hands.

Don't make faces if you mess up. If you recover quickly and keep performing it's more likely that no one will notice.

Oh thought of another one.

If you have a jump during your show and its really windy out DONT JUMP you will fly.

true story, when the guard started flying during practice the bd and coaches decided it was time to let them at least go inside. It was a lot of fun but it was really dangerous if you let go of your equipment...and the smaller girls flew farther so they almost hit the bigger girls and...yea it was bad.

If your rifle splits from one too many drops, TAPE IT RIGHT AWAY!!! If you just leave it, chances that the split will get worse are very good. (This is especially important if you have clueless rookies in your guard that lack common sense.)

Your free hand should always be pressed and pretty, unless your director tells you otherwise. And never, ever, EVER swing your arms when you're marching. It's just ugly.

If you accidentally hurt yourself with your equipment during a show, keep going! Act as though it doesn't hurt. You are performing until you get off the field. (The fans can smell your fear...)

Don't argue with the older girls. It just gets nasty, especially when everyone's at that certain time of the month and hormones are raging. Also, don't order around the younger girls, it makes them resent you. Always try to include and encourage everyone, because it just leads to a better team overall.
