Just want to know because I'm a brass player but I'm trying out for drum major and I'm either going to be the alternate or not anything at all.

No.
You're not in any section if you're a drum major. So if they played in your section last year, they're not in your section this year.
One of the snares in my percussion section auditioned for drum major, and got it. Drum majors don't mean you're in percussion because it has the word "Drum" in the name. There's two other drum majors that are trumpet players.
