I lived there for two years. It is an awesome country. When you go to the city it is always hustling and bustling especially in Tokyo. It seems like there are thousands of people everywhere. If you go to major stores its nuts.
I'd say right now the the climate in Japan is calm but ready for a change. The adults say that the younger ones are not adhering to the old ways. Many have no manners yet are cordial with their peers.
To me it seemed like Japan was in the 1950's zone. Its retro and not like the US. Its peaceful like Germany but the Japanese are very sharp like the British or the French. When you go there you feel at peace. Sometimes you do get stared at but everyone is polite. Nature, beauty, zen and the world's best work ethic reside in Japan. Its refreshing to go there.
In the countryside many people are fascinated with the occassional foreigner that passes through. Students will bow to you (or point and smile), adults will wave and say hello and sometimes grannys and grandpops will just stroll up to you and jabber away in Japanese.
There are of course problems arising in Japan but when you are there you dont "feel" it. You dont feel like you have to watch your back or your wallet. The Japanese are VERY hospitable and will go out their way to help you.
I do have to say, though the Japanese are required to study English in junior high and high school many do not continue their studies and as adults are shy about using it. You will find some individuals who love the study of English and they will be the ones to approach you on the streets just to ask you questions or help you.
Overall, Japan is wonderful. Its a great/easy peek into ancient culture coinciding with modern ways. There is nothing like getting on the train and seeing a grandma in her kimono and then looking over to see a gorgeous Japanese woman dressed to the nines mailing her friends on her cellphone. Bliss. 3nodding

On the other hand, it can be a very very hot and humid place in the summer. When I visited it for the first time, it was raining and it was night, so we thought "Ah, it'd be great to get out of this warm stuffy airplane!" But when we got out:
"It's even worse!" gonk
For a slightly exaggerate feel of the climate at its worse, take a shower and close the door and windows, then put on all your clothes.

YOU BE SURE TO VISIT HER!! So many people want to go to Japan but try to do it alone...It is so much eaiser when you have a friend there. Your food and place to stay is covered and that takes care of a ton of cash you would have needed for like a two week hotel and food bill!! Please visit while she is there! *My parents and brother never came to visit me and they missed out on the awesome-ness.

I live in Alaska. Me and my mom visited Japan in August. It was about thirty degrees F when we left Alaska. It was about thirty degrees C when we got to Japan. Do the math.
I heart Tokyo. Shibuya > all the shopping districts in America combined.
Read my topic called 'Whoops'. It's about my trip.

Sounds like people in Japan are full of hospitality. I live in Georgia. I plan on going to Japan very soon. Maybe within the next 3 years. My step-dad works with Yamaha which is a Japanese owned company, so I imagine it won't be to hard for me to get to Japan.
