Well, it's nearly 3:30 am my time and I need to get up in 5 1/2 hours. Joy of joys. I was wondering what you all do when you can't sleep... sweatdrop

You poor thing!! I hate that! I just finished work, (it's 10.45pm-ish) and am all wired, but have to get to sleep so that I can get up and work again in the morning!!
Have you tried Valerian? Or sleepytime tea? I find both of those things help me relax enough to fall asleep -usually...

if i cannot sleep i sometimes do some sports or listen to an audiobook. the audiobook helps me to clam down my mind.

I don't get a lot of sleep, and I'm fine with that. I've always done more work at night than during the day.
For those who desire sleep, however, there are myriad methods. Valerian is usually effective, but make sure you have at least eight hours to dedicate to sleep. Sleepytime Extra is a readily available herbal tea that contains valerian. They also make a version without it. Chamomile can help, too, though I think it's more effective as a relaxant than a sedative. Subtle difference.
Try turning the radio on and tuning in either a talk show or some classical music, although classical is not necessarily quiet!
On rare occasions when I actually do want to sleep and can't, I can usually accomplish slumber by lying down and trying to read, watch a movie, listen to an audiobook... Trying to do these things while lying supine almost always manages to send me off.

I don't really sleep at night. I stay up usually until about 4ish. Of course i generally sleep late into the afternoon. I work a night job, so it isn't too big a deal for me but there are times when I really wish I could sleep. Usually I read or something to calm me down. the only problem with this is it often stimulates my imagination and then i REALLY can't sleep. I recommend a big rock if you want to sleep. It's about the only thing that helps me. blaugh

i always have a hard time sleeping. usually it's because i'm so amped up from work. i usually drink chamomile tea to relax me. then i lie down in total darkness. sleep usually follows.

I've had a bad sleeping pattern my entire life. Insomnia is one which I have managed to "fix"...now I can get to sleep...I just can't stay alseep. I wake up each hour, on the hour! Fortunately I've taught myself to be able to go back to sleep, but I used to lay there for hours...waiting to doze off.
When you fall asleep, your body's temperature will drop slightly. So, a caffiene-free hot drink (esp with milk) or a hot shower or bath is a great way to warm yourself up...so you can "cool down and fall asleep". (Or at least, that is what the theory behind it says!)
Make sure your bedroom is quiet, dark and stress free - no TV or computer in the bedroom. Make sure your bed is comfortable - not too hot, not too cold and a nice pillow.
You could try a few drops of Lavender oil on your pillow.
Routine is the biggest help. Wake up at the same time each day - force yourself to even on the weekend. Having a regular time for bed and a regular time to get up should help enormously.

Thanks for all the tips, everyone! I'd never thought of audio books, that's an interesting idea. I think I have some chamomile tea stowed away somewhere, so I'll try that too.

I've found Valerian to be pretty helpful, I've tried various sleeping pills in the past, but they all leave me feeling sluggish and a bit groggy the next day, so I try to stick to herbal remedies these days.

I have a lot of trouble going to sleep, but I have noticed that I have an easier time if I take Melatonin. Been using the stuff for about 1/2 a year and I must say I can see a difference if I skip a day. The kind that I get dissolves under the tongue so I take it around 9 or 10 pm. I think I would have to take it earlier if it were the kind of pill you swallow.

Valerian is the best for me. The only catch is that you have to be ready to sleep within the "window" because if you fight it, it will wear off. It's a great thing when compared to sleeping pills which will leave you groggy when you wake up.

When I am able to sleep, it's beautiful sometimes. When I feeling like an insomniac, it's hard to fall asleep; I become a night with dark circles...I don't have any real remedies, except to take a shower and clean my face and all that stuff.

Yeah, I've used melatonin in the past...I really liked it, I feel like it helps me sleep deeper and not get woken up as much, but I feel like if I use it too often it becomes less effective. Anyone else have this experience?
