So, anyone else an avid reader? I thought it would be nice to have a thread where we can all drop by and talk about what we're reading at the time. First, a quick readers bio:Favorite Book / Series: The Dark Elf Trilogy by R.A. Salvatore Favorite Author: Charles Dickens (but subject to change) Favorite Genre(s): Fantasy, Classics Currently Reading: Atlas ShruggedThoughts: My god is this book a lot of work! I've had it recommended to me multiple times as the best book ever written, but I had a difficult time getting into it. I'm 335 pages into it, and I've been going through phases where I just can't put it down, and others when I can't stand it. I've considered giving up on it a few times, but it's still got me interested enough not to return quite yet. XD If anybody else has read it, I'd love to know if you think it's worth me continuing on with.

Favorite Book / Series: Either American Gods by Neil Gaiman or the Knight of the Word series by Terry Brooks Favorite Author: Funny, I love Dickens, too. But currently my heart belongs to Terry Brooks. Has for a very loooooong time. Favorite Genre(s): Realistic Modern-type Fantasy, Picture books. (haha) Currently Reading: To Green Angel Tower, part 1 by: Tad Williams. Thoughts: Firstly, I got this book as a gift one time. I'm not really into High Fantasy novels; you know, stuff that's a lot like lord of the rings or some dude's D'n'D campaign...but I figured I had nothing else on hand so I picked it up. The book is totally massive, it's like a thousand something pages. The real fun kicker part of it is: It's the first part of the final "book" of a trilogy. gonk !! So I'm only a little ways into it and incredibly confused, despite the sometihng like FOURTY pages of summaries of the first two books before you even get to the forward of the novel. I mean, reign it in, buddy! But, I think I'm going to keep slogging through it. I mean, at leas I'm not reading Twilight.

Favorite Book / Series:Shopaholic series, All of David Sedaris' books, lies and the lying liars who tell them
Favorite Author: David Sedaris, Al Franken
Favorite Genre(s): Humor, Action/Adventure, short stories, fables and fairy tales
Currently Reading: The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan / Rereading: Naked by David Sedaris
Thoughts: The Joy Luck Club is like a fairytale. The first story was so beautiful that I cried. It reads like music, the words have a wonderful tempo and they just flow beautifully. Naked is one of my favorite books. Sedaris is a king of humor and Naked doesn't fail. All of his stories are centered around him and his family. Sedaris recalls the memories of his childhood, such as the times his teachers came to his home to discuss his "tics" such as constantly getting up during class to lick the light switch and other things his OCD caused him to do. Very funny, very funny indeed.

Favorite Book/Series: Guardians of Ga'Hoole by Kathryn Lasky and The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien. Favorite Author: I've currently got four: Tolkien, Lasky, Asimov, and Colfer. Favorite Genre(s): Fantasy, Adventure, Science Fiction. Currently Reading: I'm working on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, as well as Paolini's Eldest. Thoughts: I used to be the most avid reader in my family. Thanks to my computer, that's kinda dwindled in favor of my own brain's creativity. sweatdrop But I'm trying to pick up that seventh Harry Potter book when I get the chance. Eldest just lost my interest after a while. I think it was after I heard they were making the Eragon movie and totally butchered Saphira's appearance.

I so have to get me some David Sedaris. I've heard nothing but great things about that guy. Hopefully I'll be finished with Atlas Shrugged by this weekend and can make a proper trip to the library to get some fresh reading material.
By the way, I would kill to be able to have a good talk with someone who has read Atlas Shrugged. I'm enjoying it a lot more now, but there is a part of me that is constantly arguing against Ayn Rand's philosophy of Objectivism.
How are you enjoying Moby d**k Cela? That book gave quite a headache when I tried to read it. I got about halfway through and then just... couldn't read any more. I thought the characters were interesting, but the mini-biology of whales from an outdated era just drove me absolutely batty.

Favorite Book: Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
Favorite Author: Jane Austin?
Favorite Genre: Fantasy, classics, humor, satire
Currently Reading: nothing because I just finished Wicked
Thoughts: I will be the first to admit that I do the dreaded thing... I read things that are popular... *gasps* lol blaugh I feel if millions of people are enjoying things like Harry Potter and Twilight, then I would too. And I did. xd I also love things that put a new spin on the problems of society and the world. I am a huge fan of satire. That is probably why I love all of the jokes in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I also love old classics, but romances in particuluar. I like to pretend that I am in a world cooler than my own. I regret to say that I don't read much nonfiction because I am kind of sick of the real world.

Okay, so I went to the library and got me an armload of new books, some that I could remember from our lists here: The Hitchhikers Guid to the Galaxy (read it, loved it), Touched by Venom (read it, didn't quite like it), A Series of Unfortunate Events Book 1 (Read it, loved it), The Alchemist, Medalon and Me Talk Pretty One Day (which I'll probably read next, since I've been dying to read some Sedaris. I couldn't find Naked, unfortunately).
I did finish Atlas Shrugged, and I don't think I would recommend it to any of my friends... Well, I take that back. SOME friends, I might recommend it to. But just so that we could argue about the inequities in the book. rofl
Currently Reading: The Joy Luck Club Thoughts: Incredibly well written. Paints a gorgeous picture with words, really heart-wrenching in some parts. I'm about 1/2 way through it after only a couple of reading sessions. So far, I highly recommend it!

Favorite Book / Series: The Eternal Champion series - Michael Moorcock, Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, and Marion Zimmer Bradley's Mists of Avalon series Favorite Author: Michael Moorcock, despite his name being funny, is an awesome author. he's from the same era as tolkien only he speaks english in a way you can understand it. He writes the darker side of afantasy, if anyone's sick of the tolkien-esque fantasy check his book series out. Especially Hawkmoon and the Elric Saga. his heros are anti-heros, and the story doesnt always end well. it's awesome! Favorite Genre(s): Fantasy, historical Currently Reading: Lady of Avalon - Marion Zimmer Bradley Thoughts: This is a really good book, it tells the story of 3 women in ancient britain, they're druids during the roman occupied era of britain.it's really good if you enjoy historically based novels. which i do :3!

Oooh, the Mists of Avalon series is soooo good! You might want to check out Black Trillium, also by Marion Zimmer Bradley, I really liked that one too. I think it was either two books, or a trilogy. It's been a long time since I read it. XP And oh man, the Elric of Melnibore series by Moorcock was really good too. Man, your post brought back so many great memories Rikkulian!
As for me, I'm currently reading Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond and really enjoying it so far. Anyone else read it? I'm only about 1 chapter in, but already I would highly recommend it to anyone who's interested in history. 3nodding I've been going through a reading kick lately. I even read two books in one day. I think I'm starting to get it out of my system though. lol

I just read Frankenstein. I had never read it until now for some odd reason. I was a bit surprised at how different it was from the movie versions. It is much more thrilling and psychological. I wondered where all of the Igor and "It's alive!" stuff came from. It was not what I expected, but I loved it! xd I also really enjoyed the writing style. There was a certain elegance about it. heart

ExistingViolation im struggling through the god delusion by Richard Darwin forgive the pun but JESUS is this a hard book to get through not only does he prove his point, but he bangs it into the ground as to proclaim his doctern and tattoo it on the earth for the world to memorize. I dont even know why im reading this book xp Might I recommend reading a book that you would enjoy rather than hate? But when you get into it that way, think about the fact that you do exist. Sure you are going along in a world with other people and set bodily laws, but there is still something inside you that makes you you. You have a consciousness separate from everyone else, thus the soul. Now think about the fact that you will one day die. What then of the soul? What if it were to completely disappear and you would cease to exist all together. Just imagine the horror of that! I choose to believe that the existence of my soul is not just a fluke of nature. Sure, evolution probably changed physical structures of living things, but you are still you. That is why I have faith that there is a god who made me and will not let me disappear. I am just offering up another opinion for you to consider. (I have no intention of an argument, but feel free to chat with me if you ever feel like it.) biggrin

Began: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and The Fountainhead.
Thompson is the master of drawing in the reader from page one. Even with my daily distractions, like work and needing to sleep and such, I find myself thinking about this book.
Rand is a complete contrast to fear and loathing but just the same, the Fountainhead makes me aware of my persona.
