So I now have the joy of owning my own form of transportation. It is a 1994 Saturn SL1. The only issue I have with it is that it is a manual. Overall this isn't a bad thing, just something I'm not accustomed with.
So does anyone have advice for someone starting off in a standard? It's been a fun week so far.
Start...stall...gas...stall...go........stop light...arg.....stall.

Congrats on your new ride; I am no expert on standard cars, but I know how to drive it a little; and I haven't drove it for years now, so I might be just as bad as you or worse, just keep practicing; really all you need to really worry about is the gas prices.

i got a manual car about a little while ago and didn't really know what i was doing. i'm surprised they let me out for a test drive on my own. the thing i've learned with the clutch is to ease up on it. when you're releasing it in gear, do it a little slower and it gives you a chance to find out how much gas to give it and keeps the car from jumping/stalling.

until after i passed my test i didn't know there was automatic and manual, thank god i live in a country where you automatically go for your full licence

my dad tried to make me learn how to drive a standard an entire afternoon, and i never even got it off of first.... my advice: AUTOMATIC, BABY!

give it a little time, and lots of practice. you'll be driving better in a few weeks. i'm pretty decent with manuals, though i have some issues with hills.

Driving a standard is actually really easy. I have been driving them for years.
The best advice I can give is go somewhere where there are no people and not poles or trees and practice. Getting the car moving from a stand still is the hardest the rest is easy as pie. Just press on the gas a little and ease off of the clutch easy until you feel the car start to move then just give it a little more gas and release the clutch and your off. Changing gears is the easiest. Just listen to the engine and when it starts to whine change gears.
