What type of wax works best for this in general terms

I think most people use beeswax?
I don't know if there's any particular reason, though.

I have heard of Paraffin wax being used, but the fumes are explosive, so i have been trying to find out what would be used instead

We use an approximate 50/50 mix of paraffin and beeswax. It seems to provide a decent level of hardness, and a high enough melting point it doesn't get *too* soft in the sun. Results in southerly climes may vary. As far as the explosive vapours go, I couldn't tell you, but we do most of our hardening in well-ventilated areas (usually outside) with no explosive results so far.
