-C'est la lune qui conduit la danse...-

I've been meaning to put this up for a while, but I wanted to discuss.

I am very fashion-oriented; I take internships that are connected to fashion or business in some way. Between breaks or at home, I always sketch something new, think up different "stories" and scenes, with the help of my favorite music. Looking at a magazine or at another design is helpful too; though sometimes I can't help but feel that some of my designs are somehow copied off of Inspirational Design A. But when I do look for inspiration, I look through several magazines, websites like Jesus Diamante's, Pastry, etc.

I listen to a huge variety of music; I don't care if it's in a language I do not understand, if the beat and the mood of the music attracts me, I will listen to it. Listening to music from Hip-hop and R&B, to classical, to Soca, Electronic, Rock, Opera, Pop, Jazz and Soul (all across different languages and cultures) are all inspirational to me. Every song makes a new 'scene' in my head, and the people and main characters inside these scenes help me create a new design. From Lolita dresses (with sequins? IMPOSSIBLE) to urban wear to evening wear, nearly every design I create from the music I listen to are unique and special in their own way. Sometimes I put feels of different eras into them-- Retro, American 40's, etc. -- and different styles from places like Morocco.

Some of the my favorite music that inspire me are usually one of these: (forget the visuals if you'd like)

1. Capsule's Retro Memory and Plastic Girl

2. Kat DeLuna's Whine Up

3. Ilaria Graziano's Valse de la Luna (not perfect French, but w/e)

And others by D, and various songs from Robin Thicke and Lupe Fiasco.

My question for discussion is:
What inspires you? What is your muse? Examples?

I'm talking about objects, icons, music, art, not so much theories or philosophies. This does not have to be lolita-related at ALL; this is a general discussion. But connecting it to Lolita is your prerogative.

Art, dance, and music tend to be my inspirations, and all tend to vary wildly in type.

Ballet and ballroom (especially venise waltz) are my my favorites, but I've also found inspiration in contemporary and occassionally hip hop.

Any variety of things, really. Dance most often inspires me to draw or paint, as well as to design and sew. Somewhat less often, it can also spark a muse or two of mine and inspire me to write-- which seems to be limited to classical dances, considering the characters that I generally write for.

Inspiration is, for me, something difficult to define. It depends on what I'm working on, since each piece ends up being uniquely defined. For a lot of the drawings I've done lately, I've been looking at lolita brands to find inspiration for the clothing or hairstyles. For my design portfolio, there's been a lot of music and quiet time as well as looking at other designers online. When I'm sewing, it's less inspiration and more background noise--I always have She-ra, Firefly or some movie on to keep me going.

When it's music, I have a wide range of things I listen to. Lots of progressive metal and classical guitar, though, thanks to my metalhead guitarmajor boyfriend and other friends. Lots of soundtracks thanks to my older-brother figure. Lots of random downloads that people have just sent me.

It's really hard to pick one thing that inspires me, though, since it all depends on my mood at the time.

My little brothers and sisters ^_^
Seeing them happy and playing around, and getting involved with the church is major inspiration.
I work with the homeless alot as well, so they are major inspirations as well.
These arnt just inspiration for material things (sewing, cooking, etc.) but inspiration to help the people around me, as well as the people who arnt around me.

I'd have to say music is what inspires me the most. I listen to almost any kind of music~
Although, I guess I draw inspiration from lots of different things, from a dress design I love, or a gorgeous scene in nature. But without fail, music always seems to inspire me to do something! (Even if it's extreamly dumb. xD )

Depending on what I'm doing, I'll listen to a different type of music. For example, I tend to listen to JRock when I'm sketching.

Oh~! And, say, if I'm trying to design something with a theme, I'll listen to music that goes along with whatever it is! (If that makes any sense at all. ^^;; )

Wonderful topic Amani, I love how it's enticed so many different answers and viewpoints of others.

I find inspiration music wise in J-rock but not in crazy, rocked out songs but the more mellow ones like Amber from Dir en Grey, D.L.N. or Guren from Gazette, Squall from D'espairs Ray, or White Prayer from Alice Nine. American wise I really like the lyrics of Linkin Park and sometimes Classical music which inspires me to do more soft-toned art pieces.

For my sewing I take inspiration from a mixture of brand, pieces I have seen on others, and some of my own. I'll base the piece on the fabric and what creation can come from it when I put pencil to paper. I sketch quite a lot of designs for different clothes but find I never find time to actually bring them to life.

I think number one for me is music because it sets the mood. My musical tastes can range from jazz to classical to alternative rock and indie rock.
I would say art as in illustration, but for me its more photography or more in particularly landscape art.
Lastly, would be art and fashion.

I think its kinda hard when you see a cute outfit you want to draw so badly but dont know how it should be drawn; so, I just save the outfit and when the time comes and I find an idea with the help of music and photography, then I can include the outfit.

I dunno, but its like putting the pieces of a story together for me...

Then, there is dramas that I watch online and on TV that give me ideas (sometimes for a joke or anything), or just things i see around me XP

I think everything can just inspire people and besides a I get distracted easily...
(which sorta explains why im so entertained by everything.)

I must say that's a unique place/way of getting inspiration. If it was my brothers, I'd tell them to gtfo. xD;

I hardly find inspiration solely from a person; but sometimes looking at their body figure and their body language helps me also, with added influence from the music on my mp3 player.

The homeless; I've never thought about. Truth be told, I hardly see homeless people on the train or the streets when on my daily routine, which is really hard to imagine since there's thousands of homeless people in New York City. It's a shame though, because most I bump into are often not right in their head, but I've met some who are very good people despite their living conditions.

Same, I thought of putting this up for a while but I never had the time to do it. I thought it'd be a nice discussion.

@blackrose: Saaaame. D: It's like an artist's block; I know WHAT I want but I don't know how to describe it; it's really frustrating. I have to catch myself at a time where I'm relaxed and loose and draw from there rather than trying to concentrate on that outfit only and end up not being able to get it like you want. Other than that, I just do a crappy little sketch, and then I go back and re-do it later.

As a writer I get my muses from just about everything.
I find inspiration from artwork, music, nature, urban life, i like sitting in crowded places and watching people move about and interact.
Most recently I've gotten a lot of inspritation from the abandoned world. Literally, abandoned buildings, things humanity has seemingly forgotten. Its amazing how beautiful things are hidden behind really ugly walls.

If Im drawing music is definently an inspiration, if im feeling a certain way perhaps sad, the lyrics help me figure out why im sad. It also helps me to let out anger [lets say im pissed off and the music is really loud and ..... okay `bodies- drowning pool` I'll just start stabbing the canvas untill my brush breaks and then im much better]. When I do draw, Im mostly working on narative or action scenes for a graphic novel, i listen to music that has a the right beat to how fast the characters are moving. Its not always about the lyrics for me.

If im designing clothing for Lolitas, I tend to find inspiration or things to help me get started through tastes, smells, feels of fabric, the person i would like wear the finished product. If I feel the dress looks to much like one I used for refrence I will take what I like about the dress and make it more my own, just keep refining.
Clothing in general I just watch some interviews of Marilyn Manson because hes really smart and things... He doesnt really care what anyone thinks of him and thats how I feel too. So I sorta look up to him~

Co-ordinating or make up when I see a certain peice [eye lashes wigs] or shade of make up, i get all excited and recall things from Party Monster and just start sketching out an outfit, and then when im done that I make what I cant buy and then I got a bunch of new things to squeeze into my closet.

For life, Pretty much looking up to my sister and trying to over come her awesomeness is a huge obstacle but also she helps me so its sorta win lose win. Hmm I think thats it..

Lots of things inspire me ;3
