We saw in 'The Constant' Widmore at an auction buying something from the Black Rock, which incidentially is the ship on the island with all the dynamite. Now we see that he's been looking for the island for awhile now.

What if the around-the-world sailboat race his company sponsors is an attempt to locate the island? If a contestant in the race goes missing (Desmond, for example) he would investigate that area to see if the island is located there (this assumes he knows about the 'makes anything traveling near it crash' charactertistic of the island). It's not that Widmore chose Desmond specificly, Des just happened to be the one to stumble upon it.

That's a good thought...

After "The Other Woman," Ben suggests that Charles wants to exploit the island for it's healing properties, but good catch on the connection with the Black Rock.

Though, why would he want the ship? Because it's probably worth a lot? Or is there more personal value to it?

Another good question is how does Penny know about the island? It doesn't seem like something that Charles would want to share with his daughter, especially since she seemed to know that Desmond was on it.

Hmmm.....

These are both excellent theories, but i have none of my own just yet.

But, I think Penny knows because she over-heard, or maybe becuase Desmond was the one to disapear.

Charlie told her he and Des were on an island.
It's sort of implied that she knew about it longer than that... after all, as soon as Charlie allowed the transmissions to come through, who was the first one?

Plus, when the hatch imploded, Minkowski and his partner in the Antarctic got the phone call... wasn't that from Penny?

The scene suddenly switches to an unknown location that appears to be in the Arctic/Antarctic. Two Portuguese-speaking men are playing chess when one notices a flashing red light on a computer, and a message on the computer screen reading "7418880 Electromagnetic Anomaly Detected." "How long has it been doing that?" asks one of the men. The other quickly opens a locked book, an instruction manual. "That's it, isn't it? We missed it again--" one says whilst the other quickly says, "We didn't miss it!" An alarm sounds. "So it's not a false alarm this time?!" the man asks, but the other one, agitated, replies, "SHUT UP AND CALL!" One of them, frightened, makes a phone call with a phone that has no button on it: it is only a one-way direct line to someone.

The phone rings somewhere. It is night and the lights are turned off. The phone is on a bed table, with a photo on it that looks like Desmond's picture. On the other line is Penelope Widmore, still half asleep. "Yes?" she asks. The man answers, "It's us. I think we found it." Penelope looks stunned by this news: there is still hope.

Huh? They called her, not the other way around. I imagine once they located the souce of the Electromagnetic Anomaly, Pennt attempted to send an ongoing transmission, which was blocked by the Looking Glass station; when Charlie unblocked it, whatever she was using to broadcast her message would have informed her of that.
