Is there anyone else who gets really annoyed when people say pit kids are the laziest band students out there, and insult them at every turn?

It gets REALLY annoying, REALLY fast. For concert band, mallets are just as important as flute; we usually wind up doubling their part if you have bell music, or helping to serve as a base with other parts. And for marching band, we may not march, but we're constantly concentrating, making sure everything is exactly even with the rest of the pit, making sure we hit all the right notes, all that. There's usually not many people in pit from what I've seen, so you can't really BS your part, and since you're up front and not in a huge group, you can't really use any tricks to make it look like you're even. Yet, just because pit doesn't march, we get ragged on all the time.

Anyone else get frustrated with it?

that is one reason why i quit being in pit. i coudn't take it anymore. the pit does as much as the marchers do and they don't get any credit for it. I hate those types of people who say the pit is lazy

it pisses me off to no end when people say things like that. just because they don't march, doesn't mean they are lazy.
and your right, pit is never really big unless they have a huge mallet section. one person gets like 5 parts to memorize and play. i was in the pit freshman year, i got ragged on all the time. so now, bing a junior and in the battery, i get to defend our amazing pit from the stupid woodwind freshman.
they don't mess with the pit anymore... twisted

Sure Pit may seem lazzy.... but my excuse is that i'm too uncooridinated to march..... PLUS PLUS PLUS pit parctices are the coolest eva in my band last fall we learn new things every day and our music was uber rad and weird/fast!!!!!!!!!!

our pit has some people in it that would love to march but they cant cause of medical conditions, and one is an oboe player so she cant march. -i guess playing the oboe can be a medical condition too. heh kidding. we love our only oboe.-

I hate the "pit is so lazy" attitude that the drumline and basically the rest of the world seems to have. We are so much more skilled than them. Anyone can stand and hit a drum, and it's not like it's that hard to do paradiddles, flams, or double stroke rolls. Pit has to move and listen to the stupid drumline for the beat. Even though my best friend plays snare, I know she thinks that us pit players are lazy. AHHH!!! It really pisses me off. I love pit! We own!!!

Without my pit my marching band wouldn't be as good.
Pit members are the closest of all, and we are the ones who make it all put together.

Our pit is the least lazy section of the band...that is, when we have to play...

When we're inside in band camp, we get bored and loaf sometimes...same outside when they're set-by-set.

Pit isn't lazy... all the time. Hell, during marching season, we're the ones loading and unloading the truck and carting it out to the practice area/field/wherever you're taking the equipment.
If anyone's lazy, it's the Drumline. Ours is, at least. Not to mention there's always been conflict between the Pit and Drumline, but I digress.

Our pit....well, some of them are lazy. Collectively, I don't think pit is lazy, but there are a select few in our band that are. That's really all I'm going to say. Besides that the pit captain will shank you if you tell her the pit is lazy XDD She'll make you push all of the pit equipment. (Yes, I have seen her do that to another freshman before...)

Drumline seems to be the laziest here, too. We have some guys (er, HAD) that used to come 20 minutes AFTER call-time. They never listen to instructions, talk during announcements, all that stuff.

I remember once at a competition last year, they did clinics on-field for some odd reason... the idiot clinician was talking about the pit and saying we needed to be quieter, then goes "Besides, pit, you guys are really unneeded. You're just a filter for the woodwinds. *fake gasp* Oh, did I just say that?!"

We all wanted to hit him, except the people who agreed. >__<

Our pit gets so mistreated.
Were fine if we get kids who cant march, but we also get the kids who cant play music.
And even if we dont march our pit music is usually harder than the rest of bands.
Plus, our band room is on the second floor so we gotta carry the instruments down stairs just to get them out to practice.

Inconclusive decision

Small band? I really can't imagine what it's like to be in one... my band has around 160 kids, we've had to turn away kids. lol.

Yeah. I was in pit this last marching season and practices were quite the bore. Our music was actually really good though!

The only thing I say to people who say that our pit was lazy was that we didn't have out door wheels, or carts, or any of that jazz. And we had a s**t load of equipment. Enough for one and a half u-hauls. so to lug all that stuff around during football games and competitions was bloody hell. gonk
