I'm going to my first convention in April (Yay!) and I've decided to cosplay as Vivi Orunitia from FFIX, which will also be my first official cosplay. I have a friend to help me with sewing, hemming, and ironing. I really don't have any idea how to do anything like this ^^'
Anyone have any tips or tricks about cosplaying they'd like to share?
What was your first cosplay?

Good luck with your cosplay! The only tips I have to offer are to have fun and get in role. The most exciting thing about playing a chracter is adopting their personality and mannerisms. Oh, and prepare for lots of people wanting to take your picture. ~hehe

Oh, and just as a side note, I thought I'd mention that I have plans to create a Cosplay subforum very soon ^____^

I wish I had pictures of my cosplay as Char Aznable from Char's Counter Attack. My friends wore the soldier uniform from CCA. But anyways try to get into character that really helps.

First cosplay! I have a semi-better wig now. I'm on the right. The huge blue thing is an Alphonse plushie, xD. Everything was made from scratch, except the gloves, dress shirt, and boots. It sucks that my pants came out too short!

I suggest that you do a bunch of planning ahead of time. Definitely figure out where you're going to get shoes and a wig from soon. With that cosplay above, I made the mistake of assuming I could find perfect black boots and a perfect wig about a week prior.

I couldn't. xD.

Thanks for your responses guys!
^^ Also, I think that's why I'm going to cosplay though, is to get into the role and have fun x.x it's my first time, so I definatly won't be winning any prizes or anything.

There are only a few complications with my plan thus far XD (aren't there always?)
Materials? what did you make your costumes out of? How did you improvise, etc...?
Facepaint or Makeup? What if your cosplay character has a different face structure than yours? T.T
And, most importantly...
Refrence Photos!
It's hard to get good photos that show both color and details, including those in the back of the outfit. That's honestly the hardest part for me right now, aside from getting it finished on time (I still have a few months and I've been planning for a while)

So, Vivi has this big hat

And I was thinking of doing the entire cosume in felt
and then painting my face black, and around my eyes yellow

Definitely not felt! Cotton is much better, and it breathes more easily, being a natural material. As for facepaint or makeup, I highly doubt that painting your face would look right. The Vivi costumes I've seen pulled off have a mask. Try looking on Cosplay.com where you can post in a Help section. (:

@ Sir Fluffington: W00t! Thank you ^^ I'm just incredibly worried about the hat, I'll stick to something lighter. x.x I'm just kinda on a budget right now and I don't know what I'm doing.
What do you do for different styled boots or gloves? Could you not just deck already made items with other material?

I don't have a lot of experience (3 costumes and working on a 4th), but I'll see what I can do.

I think that using felt would be fine, just be careful about it peeling. It also stretches surprisingly easy. (and it doesn't shrink back, either)
As far as the face goes, I think that making a full-head mask out of light weight black fabric (you don't want to get too hot) with a fine yellow mesh for the eyes. One of the main things you have to think about when it comes to cosplaying is comfort. (Ex: Can you wear it for hours on end without it driving you nuts?)

Anyway, I wish you the best of luck with your costume. Post pictures as you make progress, it will help us with giving tips.

Speaking of cosplay and such, I've got a costume I need help with. For Animazement this year I'm going to cosplay as a moogle. Specifically, I'm doing the costume that Yuna wore in Final Fantasy X-2. Here's a picture:

The main issue I'm having is figuring out how to build the head. Since I'm going to be using thick foam underneath the fabric I shouldn't have to worry about it drooping to much. But the head still need at least some support.
Any suggestions?

also when u cosplay make sure it's something close to home!!
Makes it easier to cosplay, like i did kendo for 4 years so my first cosplay was tsukikage ran!!
If u have laodes of fun on your first cosplay u'll be more confident for the next. and as u go making new costumes u get used to diffrent fabrics cuts and u'll get the hang of making costumes...
