What kind of toys do your cats enjoy - both the commercial toys and the household objects that they insist on playing with?

Violet's favourites are the little real fur mice that come in neon colours and have a rubbery centre that's slightly bouncy. She also enjoys canvas mice, pompom balls and her bouncy mini tennis ball. She mainly enjoys toys that she can pick up and chew on, and that bounce a bit during solo play. Bells are popular too. She's not too keen on hard, smooth balls, or larger stuffed toys.

She also has a scratch pad - the carpet type that you're supposed to hang on the door. It lays on the floor and she plays with the whole thing and with the cord that's supposed to go over the door handle.

Her favourite non-toy by far are Q-tips. Every time she hears someone in the bathroom she comes running to try and get a fresh q-tip out of the box in the cupboard. She also likes playing with the plunger my husband uses to insert/remove his hard contact lenses, and plays with the wrapped hard candies from the candy dish.

Macray, Tiger, Bart and Lili don't care much for most solo play toys, but do enjoy a shoelace or other dangley thing if you play with them. They really like catnip toys, though they tend to destroy them really fast. I bought a little catnip pill-shaped pillow and it was completely shredded within two days.

Q-Tips are a big hit with Boo. Amarise isn't very excited by things other than balls. Both of them like to chase the laser pointer though. I found this funny because I used to play with them using my laser pointer and now they sell them as cat toys in the store. Also my cats enjoy playing with dry spaghetti. I've found this is by far one of the most entertaining things for them, and also quite cheap. wink

Violet enjoys the laser pointer, but I don't like playing with her with it. When it goes away she gets really distressed at not being able to find it and tends to run around the apartment for quite a while looking for it. The first time we brought the laser pointer out and she did this I was actually worried that I'd damaged her some how.

I've never tried the spaghetti, though I can see small stuff like macaroni being a hit with Violet, as she'll play with just about anything small that she can bat around.

Tribble -loves- boxes. She sits in them, pushes them around, chews on them.... She's a box fiend.

That, and anything noisy she can knock down my stairs, but she seems to favour pens, flatware, and Bic lighters.

Jedi used to love Q-Tips, God rest her. Padawan love the plastic rings from gallon milk jugs.

All 5 of my cats enjoy a piece of string or a stray shoelace. My cat Satsuma, however, likes to chase after socks.....they like those tiny mouse things and cat n** a lot too. whatever's around, i guess. we've bought them a toy with a ball at the end of a spring that they could wack around, but they still like the string so much more

Oh milk jug rings! We bought violet some plastic toys that are about the same shape and size, except that they have little nubs on them so that the toy can be flipped and batted more easily. They're really only good on a hard floor and the only non-carpeted areas in our apartment is the kitchen (and bathroom - but it's not big enough for any good playing) and they end up under the fridge or stove pretty quick, so she doesn't play with them too much.

Sometimes the simplest things make the best cat toys - forget all the fancy, expensive stuff from the stores.

Oooh. I went down to the states a couple of weeks ago and picked up this cat cube at Walmart for under $4. It's made of fabric and this flexible frame, so it folds flat into about a 6x6" square, but pops open into an 18 x 18 x 18" cube with three openings and play tassells. I got one for my place and one for my mum's, and all the cats love it, both for sleeping and playing in. One of my best buys - lots of kitty entertain for my buck.

Timmy loves spongy, bouncy tennis balls that he can pick up and play fetch with. Those are also Pepper's favourites, but Timmy is a toy hog and doesn't let her play fetch if he's around.

They also love pens and pencils, tubes of chapstick, erasers, and dice. Oh god, they love dice. It's always fun to be rolling a D20 to attack something, and have a cat make a kamikaze leap out of nowhere to grab the die and run off with it.

We also got these long fuzzy fairy wands in a cat-toy-swap once, and both cats go nuts for them. Tim's something of a hunter, and anything with fur or feathers gets destroyed immediately on sight. Pepper is a total n** fiend, so every now and then I liberally dose her with my organic home-grown 'n**, which she seems to love. [Every time I give this stuff to friends or family for their cats, the cats tear open the packages and destroy purses/cupboards/etc to get to it. I gave some to my boss and she forgot it was in her handbag, and her cat pushed open the door to her room, dumped out the bag, tore open the 'n** package and spread it all over her bed xd

All my cats love the little red tabs that come off of the Yop bottles. I don't know what it is about them, but they go nuts for them.

Oreo's favorite toy other then the red tabs, is a blue and purple stripped catnip mouse.

Mercury's favorite toy is a furry ball. He loves to throw it into the air and jump for it. Unfortunately, I've had to take it away from him for now because Walter kept stealing it from him and wouldn't let me take it back from him. Merc is scared of Walter, so he wouldn't get it back himself. He'll get it back when and if Walter's owner takes him back. If not, then he'll have to learn to fight for 'fluffy'.

Esper's favorite toy is a balled up cigarette package. His second favorite toy is our artificial Christmas tree (don't even ask xD). His third favorite toy is anything he can jump at, as he's quite the little jumper.

Walter's favorite toy is anything the other cats are playing with. Needless to say, they don't appreciate it.

Bella likes strings and pipe cleaners. She found one at christmas time and she is constantly chasing it. She likes to play with feet. She likes to play in water when I am taking a bath. She loves little balls with bells in them and little fuzzy balls.

Blue: A cigarette package? That's one bad-a** cat. xd

Annika: Does your cat play in the water if you're not in the tub? If she does, please, please take some video - I'm totally fascinated by cats who like to play in water. whee

I can totally see cats going for pipecleaners.

Odin: His most favorite thing in the world is a Tim Horton's coffee tray. Seriously. Then there is yarn koosh balls (Not sure of the name but it's made of yarn.), and BOXES!

Kael: He's a water baby. But only if it's his feet getting wet. He runs into the bathroom in the morning because he knows I'm going to have a bath. (I don't shower in the morning...In the morning I just want to lay down X'D ) He then eats the bubbles and dips his arms in. He loves to splash in the water dish and the toilet. Other than water he likes little furry mice and anything with real fur.

mitts loves playing with my glasses... maybe because he knows i take care of my glasses and freak if he as much as raises a paw at it. he also loves playing hockey with anything that's on a table. he'll whack objects back and forth with his large paws until they fall off the table. then he's satisfied. i learned to keep my glasses and fragile stuff stored away.

both mitts and grumbles love playing with anything that's dangling. when i wear pajama bottoms with drawstrings, it's not unusual to have one of them climb up on a counter so they could swipe at the drawstrings. i have shoelaces scattered around the apartment so they could play with them whenever i'm not around.

mitts also loved this mouse on a wand. the mouse squeaks with every jerk of the wand. unfortunately, last night, mitts got into an accident with that toy. apparently, he was entertaining himself with it when it got hopelessly tangled around his hind paws really tight. he was really frightened and was hissing and spitting. i already went to bed by then, but then i heard him crashing around and the mouse squeaking. i had to cut away the string. of course, mitts was still terrified and scratched my hand quite a bit. poor thing. he's fine as of this morning, though.

Beatrix loves to play with those furry brightly colored mice and this mouse that is filled with catnip. She also loves to chase around this stick thing with feathers on the end of it. But she mostly plays with anything from paper, paper bags, string, my necklaces and earrings, and aslo pens and pencils XD.
My other cats dont play as much though Mama cat used to have some balls that roll and have bells in them. She used to play with them on the kitchen tiles.
