I have to go with percussion...Not because I am the section leader of the basses and the overall percussion section leader...But because we keep the band alive, we give it some flavor and give the crowd something to look at. The cheerleaders are there for all the horny guys and the perc. section is there for the people who aren't into the bubble heads in tight clothes. We are the band...and we don't parade out in gay clothes like the guard...

Exactly!!!!! I mean, who else can dance around with their instruments, or do the wave with their tenors?! By the way, I wouldn't recommend that, cause half the time you end up falling over sideways... sweatdrop Don't people ever wonder why we're called the 'heart and soul of the band' We keep everyone together, we keep the beat. If it got off, the band would die, and nobody would get anywhere. That's why whenever someone says that playing drums is easy, just look at them and say "Can you do a double ratimacue? No. You can't. Didn't think so." Shuts em right up.

*glare glare* our guard uniforms aren't gay, except last year which we're never using again, our guard gets to wear fishnet... and we're everywhere on the field.... and we toss things in the air and if a band member gets hurt it's not really our fault.... and our guard was better than the rest of our band.... including percussion!

...stupid topic! stare

I don't think there is a most important section of the band. if you took any of them out, the music wouldn't sound good.

Heres what i meen:
without the percussion theres no rhythm
without the low brass the music has no "umph"(ever heard an epic song with no low brass? didn't think so.)
without high brass the music is empty
without wood winds there would be no one to make everyone else look good =P just kidding.
Without Guard there isnt really much to look at unless you understand marching

all the sections of the band are needed equally.
(tho i do hate it when people think drumming is so easy a baby monkey with 1/2 a brain cell could do it, you don't have to be an a** about letting them know its not that simple.)

If you'd stop using gay as an insult, I'd really appreciate it.

Anyway. I think everything in the band is really important; it sounds weird to play without anything. But, percussion helps everyone keep time (hopefully).

I completely agree!! Take out one section and you take down the whole band!

I once saw a really huge band without and Guard or BandFront, just cheerleaders doing stupid s**t. Their marching was spectacular, but most people didn't appreciate it becasue they didn't find it interesting.

I also saw a band that had like 4 percussionists. Wow, were they awful. I mean, I bet if the band would've been half the size it was, their show would've been fine, but you couldn't hear the percussion with all their instumentalists.

First off....no. Percussion is not the band. they are a very important part of the band.

Also, not all guard is stupid. They're not all "Bubble heads in tight clothes" either.

As a drum major, i know how it is to try to get along without a section of the band. it is possible, but its hard, and the music doesn't sound good.
with any given piece of music thats written for a band, all sections have an important part. weather it be the beat for percussion, the melody with high brass and woodwind, or the bass line with low brass, if you take out any of those parts the music isn't going to sound the same. so yes, percussion is a very important part of the band, but, so is every other section.

i know a lot of percussionists who are very talented and work really hard to get to where they are at musically, but everyone who is skilled at any kind of instrument works just as hard as percussionists to get there. besides, it doesn't matter what section is better, because:

your all in the same band, and a band is only as good as its worst section.

I agree with Kokihi. Every section in the band is improtant to the overall efect of the band show on both parts of your audience; the judges and the regular ppl who go to shows. Well you do have your band parents but thats there job to cheer ya'll on.

okay i gotta tell you this "that last part is a tiny bit offensive" only because i am in cg and have no clue on how to read sheet music and yet i can do a doule ratimacue. and ya know the funny thing is my band directer and the dl instructer can't do a double ratimacue. that to me is sad they can't do it yet a cg kid who can't read sheet music can.

truth is she is right you need all the sections in the band and no one section works harder and longer than any other section we all work at the same level and we kick our asses and the asses of other ppl to get them and us to where we are today.

Even though i play in our percussion section, percussion isn't the most important section in the band. all the sections are pretty much equal, because u wouldn't have the right sound without any given section. for example: if u didnt have percussion there wouldn't be a beat to keep the band together. also, if u didn't have brass, there would be no volume.

I agree. And aurads don "parade around" at least not the good ones. If you took the time to learn the proper technique it takes to spin a weapon or even a flag you would know how hard it is to perform and do your work on the field.

WHY THE FRACK ARE WE STILL HAVING THIS DAMNED CONVERSATION?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

I mean can't you ppl see it?!?! Every section is just as improtant as the next. We all work hard and we all do the same damn thing. (okay not exactly) At my school it is this same topic that causes drama and hurts the overall band preformance in rehersal and at shows of any type. It is this same attitude that makes it almost imposible (did i just say that?!) to work with anyone outside your own section. This needs to end ASAP 'cause if it dosen't then every band that has this problem will fall apart and will never do anything good ever again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As LT. Riza-Hawkeye said"your all in the same band, and a band is only as good as its worst section"
