What are the regulations on handling blunt edged swords outside of combat? Two friends and I have blunt steel swords and would like to use our time together at events to touch them to each other. Not in combat but more like a duo sword progression one might practice in a dojo, learning to handle the sword, not to actually fight with it. Would this, done away from others, be frowned upon? I am speaking of slow, repetitive movements, not dueling.

If it was done away from others, and you were really careful, I don't see how folks could object too much. It might be good to have someone else handy just in case, though.

I would definitely speak to any marshals present beforehand, just in case. Then, if anyone gives you crap, you can tell them, "but the marshal said I could!!"

Speaking with a marshal is a good idea.

As far as others being present, that shouldn't be a problem. This past Autumn Rose there were five others present when I bought my sword and only three of us six now have swords, so there wont be any problems of to many out at once.

Right after I bought the sword, I had it out and was trying to attempt a kata I know, obviously with plenty of room around me. A friend took his out and a third had us pose with swords touched for a photo. We started to do a two person kata, but had to stop because I couldn't remember more than the first movement. The only thing one of the many merchants watching said to us was a reminder to touch only edge to edge, not flat side to flat side so as not to damage the swords. I take hope that if those moments didn't cause an uproar we should be cleared for further such in the future.

i have a katana and i usually bring a bundle of hay to slice up with it, and i'd be going fast and hard at the hay and i haven't had a complaint yet.
