Well not yet anyway... My mom currently has 'yurt lust' eek She and most of our friends are planing to make one so she has a nice tent/shelter for big events... We've also enlisted the help of my mundane grandfather who was a carpenter.
But anyway... does anyone have advice for it?

Ah, to live with and near an SCAdian family. My own family is non-SCAdian and four hours away. Though, oddly enough, when a friend contacted my parents to get a hold of me about going to an event, my father expressed distinct interest in going with us. To bad the plans fell through all together; damn finals week.
In response to you question, I'm sorry I have no knowledge of the subject from which to offer advice. Best of luck to you and your mother!

Thanks! Both my parents were in the SCA then stopped playing for a while, but now my mom and I play... And yes finals are a b***h!
It seems when you get four Laurel's and two ex-Kingdom Seneschal and an old fashioned carpenter everything seems to go well! Except all our neighbors are wondered about the bulk deliveries of canvas. But they're used to it by know!

I've been camping in a 16 foot diameter ger (or yurt if you'd rather) for the past five years. My husband constructed it and the two of us sewed the canvas for the sides. We did buy our roof from Panther Primatives because I wanted the best roofing I could get. It's bad when the roof leaks.
The 16 footer is nice because that means that all of the roof rafters and the slats in the sidewalls call for 8 foot pieces of lumbar, so it's a standard size.
Hancock's fabrics carries a very nice 72" cotton canvas that makes lovely sidewalls. You can put the selvage on the bottom and roll the top edge over some webbing to hang it and it will just reach from roofline to ground. You need 18 yards of canvas to do the sidewall all the way round on a 16 footer.

Thanks TN_Lark! I think we're ordering the canvas from.... a canvas wholesaler... eek But we were all wondering about the roof! I'll keep that business in mind! She's saying something about cutting a hole in pool cover and putting the other canvas over that! eek But she has a certain glint n her eye.
