Alright, I've played maybe two times, and really liked it but my parents think it's evil.

I've tried playing with my Mom, but my Dad still ain't budging on what he thinks.

I've given him around eight months of research on the game, still nothin'.

I can't think of anything else, I know that it isn't evil, and the information isn't even the problem. My Dad said that he saw kids in school that would roll the dice used in the game to determine answers on tests, and that adults did that to decide certain things at work, so his deal is in what he saw. Basicly he thinks they were possessed by the game.

But what I'm thinkin' is if D&D is evil, than so should be D20 Modern and D20 Star Wars, both of which I have and play, not to mention every other RPG out there since D&D started it, if D&D is evil shouldn't all RPG's be too?
I don't think so honestly..

I've got friends who play, or have played it and they don't seem abnormal. Honestly I think the few people that do stupid stuff in relation to the game are just mentaly inept, and what about video games? Many people have gone out and killed just 'cause they did it in a game, isn't that worse than deciding test answers by roll of dice? Or were they possessed and now all games are evil?

In all honesty I lean on the side of mental insanity, not possession.

Sorry for the wall of text, I just don't know what to do to convince him.

Are you in a religious family?
-You can use religion to show that doing something does not mean that you will use it on tests and become a fanatic, but it can backfire, because DnD has been considered like a religion because of addiction.
-Take the Matrix for example, how many murders/suicides are there BECAUSE OF A MOVIE? The facts are that people are stupid in many cases. You can use this Darwin Award method to KO most arguments. The fact is that they have no proof, while DnD itself provides useful communication skills, management skills, storytelling skills, and much more.
-Addiction is apparent in anything. People can be obsessed with anything. See that TV in your house? That computer infront of you now? Do you really NEED these? No. Do people spnd large portions of their life trying to be entertained on these? Yes. Please compare DnD.
-This is an ongoing crusade. At one point it was TV, and when that was found to be fine, they changed the scapegoat to DnD. Shortly afterward, when they found little connection with DnD, they changed it to violent videogames, which have also never been found to have any connection. The media mentions that violent videogames were there, but refuses to meantion the opposite. I can safely say that almost all murders and attacks have nothing directly to do with violent videogames. It does, however, jade our outlook on pain, similar to TV. DnD did not even do this. There is not usually blood/guts/'relations' descrabed in detail for extended amounts of time in DnD. There is plenty of it in TV and videogames, but mostly TV.
-The Amish don't normally play DnD either, are we to be like them? The Communists dont play either. Neither do Islamic Terrorists! Use extremes to demonstrate points, then again they can just agrivate.
-Rule of argument: If they do it and you can get away with it, it is usable.
-Is there anyone that they know who played DnD? Is that person dead/insane?

And that is my assistance to your rant. Hope it helps. Remember, they don't have ANY support, so whatever you can do can debase them, but may not let you win as they have the final say...

Well, yes, I am. But after seein' this site, http://www.crossroad.to/text/responses/1-index.html, I've pretty much said screw it and I'm gonna get the rules off the internet, I'll even play by myself if I have to. (Yes, I know how dumb that sounded.)

And all of the things that you have listed I have used unforunatly, thanks though.

I think the solution to my problem would be showing him the game in action, and of course real life would be much more convincing than on the internet.. That's what I'll do then.

Thanks for gettin' me thinkin'! mrgreen

If I had a record of one, then I'd give it to you, but I don't. I can, however, suggest looking up the RPGA for a game to sit in and watch. Hopefully they'd let you (especially if you did not laugh at them).
The link you posted has linkrot though...
Well, sorry that my attempt wasn't much help, but "great minds think alike" as someone said.

((My other favorite quote is "great minds think differently"))

Yes, the sad truth is some people are stubborn, and no amount of proving them wrong will ever change it. However, you umm...kinda can't play D&D alone. It takes no less than two people, since you need a Dungeon Master and a player. And a solo adventure like that would be kinda hard, and probably a bit boring. Just find people who play, play with them, and don't let your dad know what you're doing. I mean, people sneak things all the time, you shouldn't have a problem sneaking this. If you have any friends you can trust, you can leave your books or whatever with them.

Sneaking DnD kinda makes it sound worse, like it has to be underground. I do see a point though. make sense to this random poster.

Here is my advice, although it looks like you've already decided to go ahead and play with or without your Dad's consent, which is what I was going to tell you anyways.

First of all, go google "8 bit D&D" (if you haven't seen it) and laugh at it. You might even want to consider showing it to your Dad, unless you think it would only irritate him, which it might. Your call.

Then, just go play. Find a gaming group, and just tell your parents you're going over there to chill. For an ironic twist, you can tell them you're going to watcha violent movie or play Grand Theft Auto or something.

Voila, there you are. Have fun and don't get caught. wink

Go to a con with your dad, look for a MATURE group playing a game, ask the DM if you(You and your dad) may watch some time as spectators, and then go and look for a group to join in your area.
BTW: Where are you from? How old are you?
Do your parents often show quirks like this or some sort of?
Sounds like your dad believes some... strange things, at best. Not ment offensive, but it seems like your dad needs a reality check.
If nothings else works, deconstruct something he likes, rather show him that ANYTHING can be dangerous, even religion.

ask your dad if you he was sure they just didn't have a gambling addiction, which is actually common.

If you go to wikipedia and look for dungeons and dragons, there is a link for a dnd wiki with a bunch of the rules, classes, and other stuff (it even covers psionics). And don't show him the Book of Vile Darkness.

If you want him to 'let' you play then tell him "by playing games like dungeons and dragons my vocabulary will increase though usage and discovery of the words displayed within the game". If you can string together some complicated words into a phrase then you can usually get a parental figure to let you do anything justified by what you said.
