I have to admit that I got wrapped up in the hype for quite sometime, but I've had some time to realize how silly I was. People have been predicting the end of the world for many many years and all those predictions have been wrong. You guys remember Y2K and 6/6/06? Unless I'm somehow mistaken and we're not actually alive anymore, those predictions were wrong. The world is still in one piece, is it not?
Anywoodle, back to the topic at hand. I've been reading several articles about how the world will end, and I must admit that I was pretty freaked out, and I even went to the IHC website they've been advertising on t.v. lately. According to that website, a huge solar flare is going to wipe out every living thing on the planet and they're the only people who can help you from dying. Honestly, that website is really creepy and so is the commercial for it.
Now, while my heart was pumping after reading all their nonsense, I went to see if I could find anything else out about this whole End-of-the-World theory. Most people center it around the end of the Mayan calendar on December 21, 2012 and they blab on about some cataclysmic disaster and so on and so forth. Scientists have apparently proven that said disaster will happen and blah-blah about the winter solstice. I've been pretty freaked out by this stuff for the longest time and so have some of my friends. However, I managed to convince myself it was alright to joke about the world "ending as we know it" in the sense that it won't end.
And, lo and behold, I come across an interesting website that caught me off guard for a moment. The website has 5 whole articles disproving several of the End-of-the-World myths. Or, well, it pretty much slams a bunch of intelligence in your face and leaves you wondering why on earth you even believed the world was going to end in the first place. The guy who wrote these articles broke everything down and explained why such events aren't likely to happen. I read each article carefully and the guy actually put thought into what he was saying and did research and stuff.
Each article had a bunch of comments and some of them were from people who were trying to prove him wrong, or from people who took what he said and changed the context in which he said it because they only saw what they wanted to see. I honestly think I want to believe this one guy more than I do all the people who think the world will end. Pretty much, I'm saying you're going to wake up on the 22nd to find that everything is still in tact like it was the day before. And those people who believed the world was going to end are just going to find another date to cause hype about. It's like washing your hair-- rinse, lather, repeat.
Now, this is just my opinion on the whole thing and you can believe whatever you want. On fact, I'd honestly like to hear your take on the whole thing. As for the articles I've been mentioning, you can find the all below. I suggest you read them in the order I give them to you, though. A link will also be provided for that freaky stupid IHC website.
In order of Date: [link 1] [link 2] [link 3] [link 4] [link 5]
((Yes, I realize the articles are a year old. I really don't think it matters.))

[EDIT] As it turns out, that IHC website was joke some elaborate hoax made up by Sony Pictures to advertise for some stupid 2012 movie that's supposed to come out sometime later this year. I actually decided to do a little digging after I saw "This film is not yet rated" displayed at the bottom of the screen right before that stupid commercial went off. So, Sony Pictures is using some scare tactic to get people to buy into a stupid movie. No joke.
And, for those of you who realized this before me, congrats on not buying into it. I wish I'd payed more attention from the beginning.
