You held me up, you held me high.
And I believed when you told that lie.
I played soldier, you played king.
and struck me down when I kissed that ring.

Nicholas looked with interest at the game. He knew exactly what it was, however didn't know what the trick was to it. He knew that one existed though, they always did in games like this. He was going to ask what needed to be done to win when the man began talking about the rules. So there was a grand prize? He was going to ask about it when Ayume beat him to it. So she really was interested? He would have to play a round with her. If the grand prize was something she wanted, he would have to get it for her, or at least keep her playing till she gets it herself.

When the game master showed them a fluffy dragon, he heard Ayume speak in a barely audible voice. Ah...those are cute. those words made him remove his arm from around the girl. Though he payed little attention to it, he noticed the lost of warmth when pulling away. His hand reached into the pockets of his pants, pulling out his wallet which he took out of his other pants when changing. Walking up to the game master, Nick offered a sheepish smile after pulling out a bit of kan , the currency amongst souls. As the heir to the Azurian, Nicholas was entitled to a more than fair some of money. A small amount for a few games wouldn't dent his wallet at all. "Me and her would like to play. Be prepared to lose at least one of those fluffy dragons, bud." He spoke, holding out the ryo towards the man. "Is this enough?" He asked, offering the usual amount for two people. A game was usually five kan, however he pulled out ten for each of them just in case. Along with that, five kan took the shape of a coin and he hated carrying around change, or rather he hated the sound of coins clinking and jingling in his pocket.

While awaiting the game master, he looked around to see a few people staring and whispering. Through his unnatural connection to reishi, he tuned in to the spiritons in the air, listening to what they were saying. Mainly just questions about whether or not the heir to the Azurian and the Kuchiki were together, or if they were actually about to play a normal festival game. The conversations varied on topics, but they were all related to Ayume and Nicholas. He knew they were a famous couple. The Azurian were a powerful, wealthy family, and their heir had been wanted by many, not just for his looks, but because of the family he would eventually be the head of. The Kuchiki were few, however they were still rich and very well known/respected. Especially because two of their members were captains of very important divisions. One which was the head healing division and the other was the main police force. The fact that members of both families were getting married to each other, captains no less, made them probably the most well known couple, especially because the marriage was in a few months. Merely giving a wave to a few of the people, he seemed to snap them out of their staring, watching as they got embarrassed and turned away from him.

He gave a little laugh, then turned to the white haired gil he was with before. He walked up to her, rubbing the back of his head with a sheepish look. "I hope you don't mind me paying for your game. I just want you to have that dragon. Umm, are you okay with that, Ayume-san."

...You've lost that right, to wear that crown.

When Nicholas' arm pulled from her shoulder she looked up at him, her cornflower blue eyes gazing up at him curiously. Not that she minded one way or another - but he'd seemed quite comfortable in her personal space. When he pulled out his wallet and began to talk to the game master, saying that they would like to play, she gave a small glare up at her fiance while he wasn't looking. Was he assuming she wanted to play? Perhaps it was a correct assumption but...STILL! She blinked when he told the game master to be prepared to lose at least one of the stuffed dragons and despite herself she stopped her internal protesting, and let out a small laugh. Jeez, this guy was something else wasn't he! The game master took the money promptly before Nicholas might have a chance to change his mind and counted it.

"Enough for two games each Sire!" He declared, looking around rather enjoying the attention that the famous couple was bringing to his stand. It was good for business. Pulling five rings for each game from a basket beneath the counter he handed them each ten. And because I'm such a giving guy. If you guys manage to get five rings around the bottles between the two of you, I'll give you one of those dragons." He said loudly, making more whispers echo around them. Ayume, raised her eyebrow at the game-master. Sure, make yourself out to be a sweet giving man while everyone is watching because of the a ttention, and draw more business man. What a conman. Ayume snorted and stepped forward, looking up at Nicholas as he asked her if she was insulted.

" I do not mind, Nekolas-kun. We will be soon be bound as one... I should learn early to depend on you. Hey, do they have to be on different bottles? And if we get 10 between the two of us, you will give us two?"

Ayume said sweetly, smiling up at the game master, pulling a face she rarely pulled. She batted her big blue eyes up at the game master, giving him a hopeful young look. The man looked down at her, and made the mistake of eye contact - and his cheeks flushed red.

Uh...s-sure....and no Little Lady, it doesnt have to be on different bottles. He said skeptically at her and again Ayume smiled. Must keep up with the trend after all. She nodded at him then - she'd make him regret trying take advantage of people around them, using her and her fiance to his benefit.

"Then we shall win three - won't we....darling?"

She strode forward and looked up at Nicholas, looking up at his face now, as she spoke she used a name she'd have never called him under normal circumstances. However, it was clear the arrogance of the man behind the counter irritated her - besides there were nasty rumours and questions flying around about if the two actually intended on honoring their families commitment to each other. It was a good chance to squash such ugly tales. She turned and looked at the rows of bottles that were lined up neatly. There eight rows by eight, making the large square of bottles very large. She looked at the closest of bottles. That was probably the trick. Most people probably went for the closest throws - and thus they were probably rigged some how to be unstable. So she would aim further back - surely 64 bottles would be a pain to clean up all the time... so to prevent himself from having to pick them up all the time from falling,, the center back ones were probably glued down.

She raised her hand up and narrowed her eyes, taking the metal ring between her fingers as if it were a shruiken, flicked it forward...

In rapid succession she threw her rings - and out of her ten rings she landed seven. She looked satisfied at the rings and she looked at Nicholas. He needed to land 8 of them to land the three that she had promised they'd win. The game master was staring at the rings, with wide eyes - his jaw dropped. - It was obvious now to the small amounts of laughter that everyone could see that he'd severely underestimated the captains of the Seireitei that had come to his stand.

Nick flicked his rings, watching impressed at his finances work. "Ha, good job, sweetheart." He spoke with a small smirk, just playing with the rings in his hands. He held one in between his pointer finger and thumb before flicking his wrist, the ring flying through the air and landing on one bottle which already had a ring on it. Next came three more consecutively, the clinking of rings swirling around bottles ringing throughout the air. "Four and I haven't even missed yet? Haha, I'm not that bad at this game." Of course he wasn't bad. With the type of shinkai he had, accuracy was key. An off throw of his zanpakutou could lead to his death. One of the effects of his shikai were dangerous. After throwing his blade, he could instantly teleport to the location of wherever it landed. A miss could lead to his death.

He took a step back, testing his luck, throwing another two rings. They reached the same row of bottles, landing side by side, swirling around each one. "There goes six. How many did I need again?" He asked, looking at the gamemaster with a devious little smirk. "Eh, I forgot. Guess I'll just have to make them all then." He gave a wink, throwing another two, purposely putting one on top of the other so that when one looped around the bottle, the other would hit the neck before falling to the floor. A purposeful miss. "Oops."

He looked over and saw a bit of hope in the man's face. Listening around, he still heard doubts on whether him and Ayume would honor the arranged marriage. This should clear the air on the matter. he looked over to his fiance and gave a sweet smile, his eyes setting on hers. "Hey, I just need this last one right? You mind helping me out, hun?" If she said Yes, he would hand her the ring before standing behind her and placing his hand over hers, guiding her throw. It was a common thing that couples did.

Even if they had somehow missed, he still had an extra ring just in case.

When Nicholas complimented her, she couldn't help but let out a small little smug smile. The first compliment from her betrothed. Things could be much worse, couldn't they? She watched him throw the stuff carefully, her cornflower blue eyes watching his motions. Ohh...this had been more cruel to the game master then she had originally thought. Obviously Nicholas was quite skilled with things to be thrown - meaning his zanpakuto was probably a hand tossed projectile - this impressed her for a reason she could not explain. When he began to brag, she almost laughed out loud - he must have caught her undertone of irritation with the game master and was playing along with her. She stayed quiet through his boasting watching him carefully and she blinked when he purposely missed. She raised her eyebrow at him questioningly. She could tell it was faked, the excessive jerk to of his wrist had told her that much - though most trained eyes wouldn't have been able to catch that.

He looked around and finally laid his ice blue eyes on her and opened his mouth - asking her if she would help him out with the next one. Again her slender white brow raised in question - she knew perfectly well by watching his motions that he did not need help wi- OH! he was suddenly behind her and her olive skin turned pink as he placed his ring in her hand, and placed his hand over hers.

She wanted to shoot a glare in his direction however... for whatever reason he was doing this, she would play along. She relaxed her arm in his grip and let him guide her arm in the throwing motion, releasing when she felt that she should have. The ring slid around the neck of a bottle closer to the front and she twisted her eyes to look at him grinning as the game master cursed under his breath.

"Thank you..."

She murmured into her fiance's ear quietly, knowing he would be the only one to hear her. Her cheeks were still pink, the closeness between them was completely foreign to her... it was so sudden. She supposed he was putting on an act, as if they'd been taking the time out of their busy lives rebuilding to get along every day to stifle the suspicious whispers in the air around them.

Nicholas gave small smile as he guided her hand. He felt her tense up, and knew that she would probably crack down on him for this later, however for now he just wanted to win her that dragon, shut the game master up, and stop any false rumors from spreading around the crowd. Although it embarrassed him to think about it, this was the girl who would be his wife, his fiance, the one who he would eventually fall in love with, if things went well. Thinking of this, coupled with the fact of how close he was to her, it honestly made him blush. Some inner defensive mechanisms threatened to rise, however he shut them down immediately. He always had a hard time with trust, as well as getting too close to people. Everyone in his squad knew that, however Ayume was a special case. He would have to reject any wants to distance himself from her. After all, he could never really get her trust if he didn't open up.

Guiding her hand, they threw the ring together, and he watched as it swirled around a close bottle. That was all. They could get their prize now. He could easily hear the game master swear under his breath, however his attention was currently on Ayume, who turned to look at him, and whispered a thank you in his ear. He found himself happy, that he had made her genuinely smile, though it was more like a devious grin, something he found strangely adorable on the girl he had pictured so far as shy.. Such a thing made him smile back sweetly and sincerely. He noticed the pink blush on her cheeks and found himself forgetting the real reason he held her in the first place, enjoying the small moment they had.

He found himself pulling away from the girl, looking to the game master now. "So, can you give my fiance the dragon she won?" He spoke, handing the last ring in his hand to the man. It wasn't needed. He already reached the amount. While he could be a jerk and just toss it in the farthest back row, he decided against it, figuring that the game master learned his lesson on underestimating captain of the gotei thirteen. On that thought, he really was impressed with Ayume. She pretty much instantly found out the trick of the game, and capitalized on it as soon as she found out. Along with that, her accuracy and throwing form was nice as well. He would have to compliment her on that later, when he had the chance.

User ImageWhen he pulled away and told the game master to hand over the dragons she'd won she couldn't help but laugh like a little girl when he pulled down the three that they'd won. She looked at them in her arms and her eyes went and cast to a little girl in rags standing from them, watching them wide eyed in awe - it was clear admiration and joy in the little ones eyes and Ayume's heart clenched. She turned and went to the little girl with black hair, her brown eyes wide as the captain of the healing division approached her.

"I don't really need all of these... I'm afraid I may neglect one... One of them is going to my sister.. but what shall I do with this one..."

Ayume brandished the toy in front of the little girl, and the little girl trembled, as if she were paralyzed in two parts terror and three parts joy that the captain was talking to her.

"I don't know, Kuchiki-sama..." She said in a trembling voice. The little girl couldn't have been more then 5 years old, and a middle aged man came forward from the crowd, hurriedly.

"I'm so sorry if Aya-chan was causing trouble-

"Aya-chan? Aya, that is your name?"

Ayume pointedly ignored the man otherwise, putting him in his place. He humbly silenced himself, looking afraid for the young girl, dark eyes glancing back and forth between the serious captain and Aya. The little girl nodded, looking apologetically up at her father before Ayume let out a little chuckle.
"What a beautiful name you have, Aya-chan. Here... I have an idea. Why don't you make this one a home with you? I have a feeling you'll give her lots of love that she needs to grow big and strong. Dragons are special creatures you know. They are full of magic and wonder...They can heal, and fight, and protect, and they love very fiercely. Make sure you take good care of her for me, and she'll love you very fiercely."

Ayume handed one of the dragons to the little girl who hesitantly reached out and took it.
T-thank you...Kuchiki-sama. she whispered before leaning against her father weakly as Ayume stood up and walked away. Her father reached down and picked up the little girl whose legs seemed to grow weak under her. Ayume was still holding two of the dragons and she went back to Nicholas looking quite pleased with herself.

"That was fun, what else shall we do now, Nekolas-kun?"

You held me up, you held me high.
And I believed when you told that lie.
I played soldier, you played king.
and struck me down when I kissed that ring.

Nicholas heard her laugh and smiled brightly, enjoying the chiming sound. If that was how she sounded when she'd laugh, he'd try and make her delighted to the point so much more. It was adorable. Blue eyes would then wander to a nearby girl. He had seen her around the Rukongai before. At first, he thought she was alone, so he had offered the girl a home, however his heart clenched to find out that she already had a family and place to live. Although it sounded odd, he almost wished the girl was an orphan. If she was, he could have taken her into his home, into his family. However, she had a father, and no father would toss away so much pride that he'd live in another man's home, under another man's name and taking another man's money. He didn't blame the father one bit, but still, it was sad.

Watching his fiance, Nicholas was seeing the girl in another light. To do something so nice for Aya...It was definitely good to know that Ayume was a generous, kind sort. Seeing some of her different sides in only a matter of seconds, ranging from serious to sweet, it made him find her so much more appealing. She had definitely scored some points with the Azurian heir with her actions just then, though she probably wouldn't know it. Seeing Aya leave with her father, he made a mental note, reminding him to check up again later on Aya and see how she was doing. Maybe bring along a bento for the family to eat with him. If Ayume wanted to, he'd probably have her join as well, since the Rukon girl obviously took a liking to the healing divisions captain.

His white haired date turned to him then and walked towards him, with only two dragons in her arms. He couldn't help but give a small smile. "What you just did..." He tried to find the words, the girl before him different now. He no longer thought of her as the shy girl he would end up marrying. He now saw her as a girl who was generous, sweet, and stronger than she looked, who was rather easy on the eyes as well. Along with that, her shy side also hinted at a mystery he would have to figure out. The snow haired girl before him was definitely interesting. "It was kind, and generous. Not so many people are that nice with Aya-chan, so I'm glad you showed her kindness. Thanks." He spoke, words grateful. This lasted for only a moment though, before he would walk off, gesturing for her to follow him. While it was easier to lead her around by holding her, he understood that the contact would not always be necessary.

Something would catch his attention from the corner of his eye, a golden shine. He looked over to see a necklace with a familiar symbol on it. A Fleur de Lis. Stopping his stride, he would see that it was inside a glass case, along with other prizes that really contained no meaning to him. Though one couldn't guess it instantly most likely, Nicholas had a deep interest in the human world and their religions, traditions, and other things. The Fluer de Lis was something which interested him because he saw it everywhere in plenty of different areas from Florence to Quebec. Unfortunately, he knew nearly nothing about it, which was unfortunate, however it made him that much more interested to learn. "Hey, Ayume-san, it looks like there is something over here." He would speak, the slightest bit of excitemement creeping into his tone as he approached the stall. Question marks littered the area, and it was obvious that the topic would be either riddles or questions. The captain set his eyes on the game master, a man with glasses and red hair, as well as a simple white shirt with a black vest thrown over it. The man's green eyes opened to see the Azurian.. "Are you here for a game? This is a test of the mind, a challenge of riddles, something which involves real skills, unlike these other foolish games you can find around here." The man obviously had some distaste for the other games, maybe because his stall had few amounts of people, the contestants looking at cards with friends and dates, stressing over most likely questions that they did not have the answer to. "Umm, Ayume-chan, are you going to join." Nicholas would ask, looking back to his fiance.

"

Ayume looked up at Nicholas as he spoke to her gently. What you just did..." Her icy blue eyes looked down to the ground, her cheeks flushing. Did he not approve? They were noble families so why couldn't they share a bit? Then again she'd won that dragon from his money... perhaps she should have given it to him... but then he finally went on to say he was glad, and spoke as if he knew little Aya as if he knew her personally. Ayume's eyes went up to Nicholas and a pleased look crossed her face and she nodded awkwardly, her creamy flesh turning pink and she followed him, hugging her prize dragons close to her, thinking of her zanpakuto when Set stopped at a stand that was covered in question marks. Immediately her interest perked up as Nicholas asked her if she would join. She walked up to him, staring at the stand, then her icey blue eyes turned to the game master and she gave him a shy smile, before hiding slightly behind Nicholas.

Akane had been following the other two now for a while, slinking from one shadow to another and watching them through a pair of opera glasses. She was not happy about how this was going.

She might, I stress MIGHT, have been reasonably alright with this whole arrangement thing if she had not been groped by that pervert Set while in Rukongai some while before she actually found out who he was.

As it was, she was furious that someone like that could possibly get anywhere near her cherished and beloved little sister. The very idea revolted her.

Seeing them make their way towards the riddles booth, Akane shunpo-ed ahead of them and nabbed the riddler, quickly pulling on a costume for a disguise. She was now dressed as a gypsy fortune teller: huge curly black wig, low-necked dress with huge puffy sleeves and skirt, massive looped earring, a ton of smokey make-up and a patch over one of her eyes.

Taking her new position, she watched critically as Nicholas and Ayume approached.

Ayume standing behind him shyly made the Azurian heir smile. She was too cute. Looking back to her, he gave her a reassuring smile, wrapping an arm around her waist and pulling her close to him. Little did he know, during this time the game master had been switched and it would be not some red headed man, but Akane who would be watching this open display of affection. "Since you're smiling, I'm guessing that's a Yes, Ayume-san?" He asked softly, turning his head back to the game master.

The sight that awaited him could be described only as a gypsy of some sort. It definitely was not a red headed man who looked like he hated his afterlife. He didn't want to question how this happened, as confusion was probably the overall theme of the place, something which could be guessed by the question marks everywhere. "What happened to...nevermind. Anyways, me and my date were planing on playing the game, if it wasn't obvious already." Nicholas was no idiot, he already questioned the girl in front of him to be someone suspicious, mainly due to the captain level spiritual pressure which was unique to Akane. She hadn't bothered to hide it from him, something which was not a good idea. He had near mastery over spiritual aspects. The only reason he didn't question it was because Ayume was there, and he'd look silly and paranoid if he was wrong.

"So, what are the rules and the cost?" He asked, drawing his wallet once more, preparing to draw out the necessary Kan for what they would be doing. He did this with his free hand, his other arm still around Ayume's waist. "Or rather, what is this game in the first place?" He asked, drawing the wallet from the coat pocket of the suit which was picked out for him by Sage. Where was his uncle anyways?

Ayume looked up as he wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her close smiling, speaking as he assumed it was yes. Her cheeks burned bright pink as she looked up at him and nodded, looking back at the riddler. She blinked in surprise as she noticed that' 'he' had turned quite instantaneously into a "she". She blinked in surprise and she tilted her head as she couldn't help but notice the woman felt ...familiar. And powerful. She turned up to Nick as he asked what the game was about and bit her lip.
"He...you... uhm... he said before he...left that it was about... using your mind to play this game. So, its riddles right?"
She smiled and tugged on Nick's shirt gently, looking up at him, and nodding. It was clear she was interested - she wanted to play.

Akane's eyes were so narrowed now that one could seriously question if they even open anymore. Ayume was actually getting along with that upstart Azurian...Well, that was not surprising, the dear could get along with the Devil himself. That was not the problem, the problem was that it was the upstart Azurian might go about 'getting ideas', especially as this whole bloody idea was centered around getting them to 'get along'.

She then remembered her act and began waving her arms about in the air in a 'mystical' manner that, rather, made her look like she was trying to freshen up her arm pits. Akane also had the creeping feeling that her wig was slowly but surely sliding off, so she then slapped her hand on the top of her head, looking as if she had just gotten 'divine inspiration' and moan in a very sibylic manner.

"There is no cost for this game, young Lord and Lady," Akane whined in a gasping nasal voice befitting a prophetic crone of Fortune, "I, Madam Babushka, will delight you with my riddles. For a donation, if you so wish."

She added, looking meaningfully at Nicholas then at her donation box.

"Listen upon my words, children," she continued, still glancing pointedly at Nicklolas to make sure he did give his 'volunteered' donation. "And answer if you can. Thus is my riddle to you,"

"Two bodies have I;

Tho' both join'd in one,

The stiller I stand,

The faster I run."

She then sat back and grinned, crossing her arms in a self-satisfied manner, then looking cross-eyes at the wart she had stuck onto her nose; it seemed to be coming unstuck....

You held me up, you held me high.
And I believed when you told that lie.
I played soldier, you played king.
and struck me down when I kissed that ring.

Nicholas was listening, watching this madam Babushka explain, however he couldn't help but pay attention when a certain white haired girl pulled on his shirt. Looking at Ayume, he saw her nod, and felt delighted that she'd play it with him. Mind games were always tricky when trying them all alone. Babushkas arms waving about caught his attention, so the Azurian heir listened to her. She spoke of the way that there was no price, and spoke basic rules with not so subtle hints of a want for a donation.

Constantly seeing her eyes flicker from him to her little donation box, he pulled out a fair amount of kan from his wallet, before setting it into the box. He shot her a look which read "Happy?" before listening to her continue speaking. She would speak out the riddle, then oddly look cross eyed towards her nose. Just deeming the woman as probably off her rocker, he thought on what She said.

Thinking about it, the answer could have been multiple things. He was sure that there were multiple machines in the world of the living which worked in that way, however he assumed the answer would have been something without too much mechanics and moving parts, as they were souls, and the soul society had no such things, aside from maybe the items inside the R&D Squad. He doubted that the black haired woman knew of such things though. Not thinking hard enough at the moment, he turned to his date.

"Ayume-chan, you have any ideas?" He asked with a sheepish smile, a little embarrassed over asking her, since he was the one who wanted to play the game in the first place. Nicholas noticed something in the way he called her, a slight change in the honorific. He was surprised that he didn't even know he said it. He supposed...he was just getting comfortable with her. Though he knew that he should learn more about the Kuchiki girl he was arranged to be married to.

Ayume listened to the woman, not letting her eyes stare to long at the dramatic gypsy. She honestly couldn't take her seriously. It seemed like something her sister would be like alone in a room with her - to try and make Ayume feel better. She however contemplated the words of the riddle carefully. When Nickolas turned to her, she did not seem to mind the honorific, as her mind twirled possible answers in her mind.
"Two bodies Have I...joined in one. The stiller I stand, the faster I run...? That's such an odd thing. It could be multiple things. Like, the earth for instance. Two bodies made of water, and land. It seems as if we are standing still, but really we are travelling rapidly through space and time, turning on our axis. Or it could be the ocean, two bodies joined one of salt, one of fresh water... the currents of the ocean underneath are not visible to us, but really under the still and yet ever waving surface...mmm... perhaps...even an hour glass. But that is really not as pertinent."

Ayume looked up at Nicholas and smiled, her creamy cheeks turning pink. In truth...she honestly had no clue if she was even on the right track.
"Ah, what do you think, Nickolas-kun?"

Nicholas pondered for awhile what his answer could be, and as his date continued to speak, the closer he got to the answer. When she turned towards him, blushing as usual, he listened to her speak more. He noticed how much she was smiling, and felt happy that she was doing such a thing. He had taken her out of her shell a bit. "I think...that you may just be on to something." He spoke, shooting her a grin before crossing his arms.

He doubted it was the earth. The answer would be too obvious. Riddles tend to make you think of the least expected thing. Her assumption of the hourglass...well, it seemed perfect. "You may have called it not as pertinent, but the hourglass may just be the precise thing we're looking for. It's not so easily guessed, and completes the motions as well. Two bodies put together than move faster when stilled." He seemed really absorbed into the whole thing, riddles and mind games being something he loved. The fact that she helped him out with the riddle made her even more great in his eyes. Ayume really was something...

Clearing his head of those thoughts, a light shade of pink on his cheeks, Nicholas would turn towards the gypsy and grin. "So, tell us, are we on the money? Is it an hourglass?" He'd ask her, hoping they were correct.
