I just found out about this. This is just terrible, i can't even believe it. Seriously trying to pass a hateful message on a bill! It really just makes me so sad.

Guys, please sign the petition on www.allout.org to stop this inhumane and ignorant bill being passed by their government. Thank you.

I signed the petition, last night when I saw it on a blog I follow.
I then linked it to Facebook where one guy said "lol".
I never wanted to punch a person so much in my life.
He then told me to grow up because it doesn't affect me.
I do not understand people, sometimes.

Why must some people be so autrophobic (afraid of others)? Why must we be dictated by the remnants of the australopithecine mind? If only pride, fear, and hate were nonexistant

Do they consider it moral to pass a bill like that? confused

They've been talking about it for a while.

The reason why Uganda is so against homosexuality is because it is mainly a Christian country. It has also had help from US evangelists who talk about the homosexual lifestyle. Honestly, I found out a lot from this documentary. It doesn't rationalise their actions by any means, it just gives more depth to the issue.

I'm going to be totally honest here...

There's little to nothing we can do for a number of reasons.

First and foremost, this is Uganda, not the United States. Last time I checked, they are two different countries, which means we are not allowed to mettle with the affairs of each others' governments. Yes, we can influence change, but, seriously, what are the chances that Uganda is going to change their beliefs because a few Americans believe it's immoral? If we really want change, we need to come up with something FAR more creative than a simple petition.

Second, as She Promised You Cookies mentioned, Uganda is a primarily Christian country. Obviously, in the eyes of many hardcore Christians, homosexuality is a sin. Yes, United States has the luxury of having multiple religions and preferences, thereby allowing a greater range of flexibility in points-of-view. But this is the United States, not Uganda. And, again, the Uganda government still has supremacy in their own affairs.

Third, and most importantly, this is immoral in OUR eyes, not theirs. Yes, of course I am against this kind of behavior. But who am I to say that another country (which includes their culture, practices, believes, attitudes, values, norms, etc) is immoral just because I say it is? It's like telling a mathematics professor that he/she doesn't know the Pythagorean theorem.

_______

All I'm saying is: A PETITION WILL NOT SUFFICE.

I could not have said it better myself. It's horrible that their GLBT people have to suffer like that, but honestly that is the least of their worries. People in Uganda are more concerned about poverty, AIDS, and surviving in general. Signing an internet petition is going to accomplish absolutely nothing. We just have to accept that there is nothing we can do. If you want to make a difference, focus on the causes in your own country. Get involved, educate yourselves on the facts, be a productive member of society, and fight the injustices in your country. If everyone is concentrating on other countries, how the hell are we going to get anything done in our own.

This has been going on for a while now, however it is Uganda. I watched a show on this a month or two ago, they brought up a statistic(not exact but something like it): 5 out of every 7 vehicles in Uganda are owned by the UN or another foreign aid group. They haven't been able to pass this bill because nations have said basically "You pass this bill and we will cease all operations in your nation" They have threatened to cut off all aid and financial support to Uganda if it passes; and as long as they continue to do this gay people in Uganda are safe (from this bill that is... they really aren't safe as it is). Plus that bill would completely contradict UN rulings. Sexual Orientation is protected in various UN resolutions condemning unjustified killings. Oh and apparently Zimbabwe has the same stance as Uganda.
