I'm going to feel like an idiot for asking this with how long I've been on Gaia, but...

When you buy a monthly collectible, what exactly happens?

Well if you buy a monthly letter, it will be sealed until the 15th of the month when the monthly collectible items are revealed. From then on, you'll be able to open you letter and pick one of the collectibles which you can equip. That's basically it. It's just an equippable item with multiple poses. ^^"
