This thread will mainly be for my own use, and will act as a list for items on Gaia that are referenced from traditional/modern Chinese culture. It will likely not be a complete guide since I am never up to date with what Gaia is pumping out by the week/month, but I will work on it.

If I have time, I will add Korea/Japan items but mainly I will focus on Chinese items (traditional / non-traditional).

If this list had helped you out in any way, do feel free to leave a tip.

Warning: Contains my opinion on the item in question

Page 1:
Chinese Items
Default—Basically Starter Chinese items imo

Modern Chinese items—I will consider anything post Qing Dynasty to be modern. Anything that's kungfu related (i.e Ip Man) will also go into this category.

Traditional / Historical—Items that probably only show up in CN historical TV drama goes here. You should expect items of the same similarity to Curse of the Golden Flower. Anything that isn't Chinese Fantasy will go here. I'm honestly a little disappointed with the lack of historical items but this is Gaia. Just look at Story of Yanxi Palace to know how pretty clothing can get back then. It's not always xianxia/wuxia that gets THE designs okay?

Fantasy / Xianxia / Wuxia—Chinese fantasy. You probably clicked on this thread just for this. Xianxia = stuff to do with immortals and divine powers. Wuxia = stuff to do with sects + martial art + why did you kill my shijie/shidi/shixiong/shimei + too many episodes for revenge.

Myths & Folklores—Chinese holidays and also common legends and stories. Like Chang'E. Sun Wukong IS that guy who keeps stealing the Queen Mother's peaches from the tree of immortality yada yada. Same goes for the Chinese zodiac. I will try to keep blatantly Festival items here. If the contents of the item does not match the name, it gets banished into the last category.

Miscellaneous—Plushies, accessories, companions, background, etc. goes here.

Items that are not Chinese, or not specifically Chinese, but can still be used for a Chinese themed avi—literally what it says on the tin. This thread was created with the aim of creating avis with a strong relation to my own culture (although I am from Hong Kong, so I'm more the qipao era), so items that may be of use will get an honorary mention here. Gaia only tried to profit off of the trend of XianXia that's why most of the previous, older items tend to be Japanese (just look at the overwhelming number of JP items compared to any other culture that is in Asia, dude. They even had to release a thousand different copies of what is essentially just a seifuku, get it together).

Default Gaia Chinese Items:

Default Traditional Long Qipao (before 1930s)

I have no idea why Gaia decides to call short qipaos spicy and I don't want to think about it.

Shiba Qipaos (all colours involved) are absolutely not qipao in structure, shape, or design. And therefore excluded from this list. It can only be considered a costume.

Modern Chinese Items:

Grandmaster & Recolors should be included in this list but they're too ugly.

THIS IS A POLITICAL ITEM. I CANNOT STRESS STRONGLY ENOUGH THAT THIS IS VERY POLITICAL

This is not just a fancy speech bubble item, thank you very much. I am from Hong Kong and things are getting worse. You can get arrested and beaten up by the cops (the entire cop system is corrupted) just for saying any part of this, or displaying this in any order. People are calling China's secret hotlines to snitch on those who do not agree with China's overruling of Hong Kong's current political system. Those people get arrested and mysteriously "vanished" by the government (by vanished I mean they just murdered them by drowning them in the ocean or throwing them off buildings pretending to be suicide). Things are just bad.

Believe it or not, most Lion Dance troupes in the past were actually controlled by the local mafia. They'd also fight for territory, and black lions were the fiercest out of all lions in terms of performance. Having a Lion Dance troupe perform before your business is a way to usher in luck and prosperity, a practice some Chinese companies still do every year. Troupes would be paid handsomely if they did a stellar performance. These days, lions in lion dances are just huge kittens. They'll blink at you so cutely.

What's an orange doing here, you ask. This isn't an orange. It's a mandarin. Commonly seen during the Lunar New Year and passed around like hot potatoes in multiples of two by friends and relatives. As in, no one wants any more mandarins because there's like 50 of them at home but it's a tradition.

What they have done here is mishmash Japanese AND Chinese traditional motifs together and created this thing. Gingko is a pattern motif more commonly used in Japanese culture than Chinese culture. Chinese culture is all about peony blossoms, bamboo, and co. Honestly this is more of a costume I can probably get off Taobao than anything you would find in Trad. wear. Regardless, you can probably layer it or something. And the earring's nice.

Gaia doesn't know if it wants this item to be Japanese or Chinese. The hair and dress item is still passable, at least. Dress item is actually lingerie for women in the past.
