I didn't even use/see it yet but I can already tell that Gaia really shot themselves in the foot by making it Flash in the day and age of increasing mobile use, particularly iPhones which cannot use Flash. neutral

I really was hoping the chat feature could be something I could easily access on the go.

I'm primarily a lurker, so this feature has little use for me. Would be nice if you could find a random chat with strangers for time-wasting sake, but I understand why that's not exactly kosher on an internet site populated with mostly people under the age of 21.

My biggest concern regarding this is if it means the GoFusion page will be stripped of its Daily Chance. Mama needs her daily 100k infusion into her account, god knows I'm too lazy most of the time to do much else. xd

It feels at least 5 years out of date already and it was just released. I wonder what the process was for deciding how to make the chat feature. 'We need a chat feature.' 'It should be functional.' 'And modern.' 'And sleek.' 'Let's use Flash.' And no one vetoed that decision?

Considering how big mobile-friendly things are, you'd think they would design something that they could later integrate into an app update, instead of just making something that will lock out a big market.

In the context of roleplays, they actually get a fair bit of use. It's useful for setting up and plotting, which separate out of character threads aren't always that handy for. Other people use it the same way towns or rallies are currently used. It's just a faster forum for them.

I used to love hanging out in chat rooms back in the day. I wonder if anyone out there remembers how to do T2 fights... XD

Edit: Incidentally, even when chats were popular like 5-10 years ago, I don't think they were dumb enough to make em in Flash. I honestly wonder if that's the only thing their employees know how to work with.

That is probably the case, they chose to go with something they have experience doing and that wouldn't take them a lot of time compared to the time that would take them to learn and test the feature if html5 was involved for example. Cost / benefit.

Right now it shows not one of my known friends being online and I have eight people on my friends list online right now. So yeah I think it has a lot of things that need to be worked out before it can be considered fully functional.

This. They need to work out a lot more kinks before even launching it.

It's ugly.
It's boring.
It's impractical.

It needs a lot of improvement before I'll even tolerate using it. Plus the fact that it's flash is just unbearable, with the resources allocated into making it, they could have easily made a MUCH better (visually and mechanically) chat system using PHP. I'm not at all interested in this chat system and I expect more from a multi-million dollar company that isn't developing any other major aspects for this website.

I might be a stickler but I've been here since 2004 and I've seen better chat systems on hundreds of other websites.

I probably won't use it, but I know people wanted a chat system. Sad to see the GoFusion tab go. They should have nixed the GCash one instead since we already have GC stuff at the very top.

Apparently both you and the person you want to chat with have to both have your chat windows open at the same time for it to show anyone online. If it can't tell you if your friends are online before they open the chat window how is that going to work in you asking if they can chat?

If that's the case then I don't see them making a stand alone Gaia Chat app that can link back to your site account and connect to the chat window so people on mobile can chat with people on the main Gaia site.

Neither do i unless they are planning to add the feature to the gaia's app ( if is true that they were/are hiring people with experience on mobile apps ) but even then, it could be a different team with different priorities.
