just as annoying with the " is the new punk!" people oml
If she wants to say anger and angst, that'd be a lot more accurate and probably not sound so stupid.
tbh i think thats what ppl like her mean when they say s**t like this
they dont realize that punk and goth are like, entire subcultures with decades of history
and yeah those sub cultures shouldn't be harshly gatekept, but this isn't about gatekeeping it's just using a word straight up wrong
not that different to when conservatives use the word punk when they mean "everyone hates me because I'm a bigot and lick cop boots, so I must be the real counter culture. also I only listen to kid rock everyone else is woke"
i have literally heard maybe two of her songs and i thought about trying her more recent stuff, but i didn't wanna ******** up my algorithms or care enough to open incognito mode

I think a little gatekeeping is healthy and people like Taylor are a good reason why. I am in the personal camp that goth is defined as the music you listen to, not wearing all black and being a "spooky halloween person". But I also feel like that's an easy bar to clear. Just start listening to some goth bands. Shits literally free to do with youtube and spotify. I don't think you need to be able to name all the band members and their most obscure songs. But at least get your feet wet, you know?
Nothing about her is goth or punk, though. She seems to mean she felt angry/angsty/dark. Which does not make it goth or punk. I'm dunking on her for using those words wrong. They're words associated with a specific meanings, attitudes, and sub-cultures.

She's a talented song writer and singer. She just IS the mainstream.
the point of goth & punk is to reject the system
she may feel she's spreading awareness & preaching to a large audience
but everything she's done is the very opposite
Wanna know what a real goth icon did about ticket prices?
Went to battle with Live Nation/Ticket master and forced them to give fans cheaper prices on tickets and to yeet out the market pricing on tickets. And forced them to refund fans the hidden fees.
And then he went on stage and did a 3 hour set every night of the tour.
God bless you, Robert Smith.
i'm sure robert smith doesn't fly his private jet daily and have multiple pr relationships
so many goth & punk bands invest so much into community health
tons of them have been known to donate to charities constantly & host tons of events for those in need without leaving behind a huge carbon footprint & lies
(saying all this for the people in the back, luv u papa)
Also for the people in the back, the private jet isn't inherently the issue. I know for a fact it would be dangerous for all the other passengers, crew, and Taylor herself if she attempted to fly commercial, just from the inevitable swarm of fans trying to see her.
It's using the jet for places where a tour bus or entourage in cars would suffice.

I'm not a Taylor Swift fan but that's literally what she meant by that quote, angry/angst/dark. Which is part of the goth/punk sub culture.

That is the most superficial part of it, there's so much more to either subculture than just that. Just because you're angry does not mean you have punk feeling. Just because you're feeling dark and angsty, does not mean you're feeling goth. Everything about her brand and image is the antithesis of both goth and punk, as both are anti-mainstream and aggressively counter culture.
Just like "inconceivable" kind of means "unbelievable" or "impossible" it's not a word you can use to replace the others to sound smart. It just makes you sound dumb and makes it clear that the word does not mean what you think it means.
